Beginner Flowers: Flower or grass?

Author Content ktressler Grapeville, PA (Zone 6a) May 24, 2007 07:16 PM Post #3532365 I am new to gardening and have this plant in several places around our yard. We are in Z6a/5b in SW PA. It has looked like tufts of grass to me and I was going to mow it over, but I noticed the flower stalks. This morning it was blooming purple (three petals with yellow anthers). There are several buds on the stalk. Is this actually an ornamental grass, a normal grass, or a flower I am unaware of? Any help is appreciated. They pictures were taken late in the afternoon...I had noticed the blooms early in the morning.
