This is a pretty annoying problem. We have 3 bathrooms in our home and all receive pretty much equal use. One of the 3 toilets however is constantly clogging! We suspect perhaps the child who lived here previously may have flushed something down the toilet. But perhaps that's not it at all. In any event, does anyone have an idea on what could be done to fix this? Do we need to replace the toilet or would the problem be completely in the line? Do any commercial de-cloggers actually work?

Thanks in advance!

Try one of these gizmos:

[HYPERLINK@images.google.com]

You can get a hand cranked one cheap at a hardware store, or rent a powered one.

Well, we bought a snake from HD. It was $7. To rent was $5.

All seemed well and great---the snake came out bent and the clog seemed gone for about 2 weeks. Now this week again we are back to 2 clogs so far. And I've never seem a plunger take so long to be able to correct it. Going to snake one more time this weekend. Then it's time to call in the pros.

To bad the previous owners left us this obvious problem but at least we opted to buy a home warrenty. And it's a small problem to have thank goodness.

Try this: When your commode is not clogged, flush it once without any waste in the bowl. Time this flush. When your commode tank has filled back up and is ready to flush again, pour a bucket of water in the bowl ( do not flush it with the handle). Time this flush. If it flushes faster with the bucket than with the tank, this means that there is no obstruction in the trapway and that the problem is the commode itself and it is time for a new commode. I recommend a Kohler Cimmaron bought from a plumbing supply house or Kohler online. If the bucket flush and the tank flush are about the same, then you have an obstruction in the trapway or the sewer and you should probably call a plumber to find it and clear it. Hope this helps.

Wow, with a user ID like that I sure can't beat your advice! :)

Well it's one that seems to clog more but actually all 3 in the home have done it from time to time. My last home, brand new, rarely clogged. Here the toilets are all 3 different brands. One is a Kohler.

I will try your technique and see what happens!

Thanks for the compliment. I hope this helped you figure out your problem. Also remember that it is not rare for more than one, or even all of the commodes in the house to be bad. When I bought my house, I replaced almost every fixture in the house in the first year! Don't settle for a fixture that only works intermittently. Quality time in the bathroom is very important. :)

TMP,
You are a lifesaver for this forum. Glad you are a DG'er.

Is there anything we can help you with - what forums are you watching?

Probably should have D-mailed you, but thought others would also be interested.

D-mail is private email within Dave's Garden. Kinda special - no one outside can see any of it - just between members.

Ok. Your situation sounds very similar to mine. What happened was this.

One of the toilets was replaced by a previous owner, so it's a low volume flush.

Great for the environment, NOT so good for the flushing.

The solution: change your toilet paper. I'm not joking. Try Angel Soft. It's not as soft as Charmin (I know...) but it will deteriorate in the toilet water sufficiently so when it hits the pipes it doesn't just build up from lack of flush pressure. Only use it in that bathroom. The others are fine, so don't fix it. :-)

I know how silly it sounds, but the the plumber who recommended it to me worked for the community water service for like 25 years and was an expert in drains. It was also the only thing of MANY that I tried.
