I have been looking online for the best possible price to purchase one but I'm a bit confused. I found one for $359, and it's a Frigidaire brand which includes shipping and all the others I have found were $500 and up. I was wondering what criteria I should be looking for when purchasing a smooth cooktop. I'm by no means a professional cook or even a person who likes to cook so it's not like I would be cooking 24 hours a day 7 days a week. Thanks for all your input!

Do you have a Conn's or other big appliance dealer near you?
Browse some appliance stores and ask questions. Most sales staff will be happy to provide you with information and comparison data.

Years ago we wanted a Jennaire. After doing some research and browsing, bought another brand. Unfortunately, they are no longer in business - corp. mergers, etc. destroy some great products.

Consumer reports is another good research tool.

Price shouldn't be the only criteria.

Whirlpool is the most reliable, but you need to check the warranty the man. went to a straight 1 yr warranty, the smooth top had a 5 yr warranty until feb. 2006. You can buy kit/aid or whrl/gold with a better warr. your best bet is to go sears,cc,lowes. Walk down the middle aisle or ask about returned items they still will have the full warrr. just save your rec. and send in the warr. card 9 out of 10 that I repair at these stores have nothing wrong.

I'm over Maytag and box stores that sell appliances. Every since Whirpool took Maytag over the Maytag applicances have been substandard in my opinion. For example, when my ceramic top stove was two years old I had to have two burners replaced. Two weeks practically to the day the compressor on my upright freezer died and had to be replaced. Initially I was told by Home Depot that my warranty would not cover it. After purchasing and paying cash for a new one (GE) from a family-owned dealer, I was called by Home Depot and told they were mistaken, the warranty did cover it, but they would only give me $150.00 for the food. You can imagine what I told them. I am having it repaired as we speak and and plan to give it to my church. Now my Maytag dishwash is not getting my dishes clean. Oh well. Live and learn. Do not make major purchases at box stores.

Ive had a GE brand glass top stove for 6 years now and havnt had problem one with it. My main need aside from price and durability was I had to be able to fit a really big turkey into it, LOL. I had a 40 lb turkey for Tday last year and it fit with no problem.

Note:instead of buying the glass top cleaners which are very expensive, get bon ami cleanser. Guaranteed not to scratch and my top still looks new,

My best ceramic top stove was the Amana. Started with the original Corning, then the Amana that lasted for many years and now I have a Maytag. Won't do that again...Maytag is no longer a quality product. For cleaning the top I've always used a single edge razor blade, Bon Ami cleaning bars and paper towels. The bars are no longer available but the powder is. Cleans the stove beautifully and is less expensive than the commercial cleaners that are recommended.

Yup on the blade and bonami too !

I will never get anyother type of cook top or stove .

I consider myself a pretty good cook and when I am 'creating' I make a mess .

So easy to wipe up.

Also I use mine like slow cooker for some things . Just use a GOOD heavy SS pot that has heavy sides too not this tinny thin sided crap they sell most places nowadays. and a tight fitting lid.

OH yeah, try to not slide a pot across the top, I don't know how it happened but DH put about a 3 " scratch on the stovetop the first time he used it. That was 10 years or so ago. I think I am the only one that sees it .

If you burn something to the top like sauce a razor blade will take it right off.

I use a fine grade rough sand paper. The one that comes with foam in between or the one that comes with a handle. It doesnt hurt the surface at all. I found the creme cleaner to be useless.

sand in sandpaper is silica and it will scratch glass. Not a good idea IMO and for sure you will void any warranties on the cook top. They only approve fine grit polishing type cleaners and the razor blade.

I have been using this since I bought it and it still looks new. No scratches, no elbow grease needed. I get it at a box store that sells different grades of sand paper. if I ever need to use my warranty it wont be for scratches. I have none.

What grit exactly? 1000? I can't picture anything under 200 grit not scratching the glass.

That's for a metal flat top. LOL. I'm to scared to try it, I can't believe that doesn't do something bad to the top.

Core,
I never recommended that anyone try this. I just commented on what I do with MY unit.

I also think we should not underestimate the durability of a "glass" that has been tempered and treated to withstand high temps and the abuse of cookware. It may be sronger than you think.

I hope you enjoy your unit as I am enjoying mine.

I have the GE profile. It seems to be okay. Are you sure you want a glass top. I have to disagree with some of the other on this site. I really don't like them. They are easier to clean than the other but I have to take off my knobs to do a good job and that is a real pain. If you could get one that has digital I would go for that. (No knobs to clean around) Also I don't know if it is just the GE but it slow to get to temperature and then gets really hot. Does everyone elses flat top do that?

OOOOHHHH People...first of all if your top is CERAMIC do not use glass cleaner on it. Second of all that Cream (ceramabryte) is not a cleaner...it puts a light coating on the surface of the stove so that spills cling to it rather then etching the surface of the stove. Doesn't ANYONE read their instructions anymore!

I've burned chocolate sauce onto my ceramic cooktop burner...tried credit card, etc. No luck. Wondering if I should turn the burner to high and try to burn it off. I've tried turning lower heat on to soften the goop, but it's not budging. will it make it worse to attempt burning it off?
