Dinu Mysore India (Zone 10a)

| Hello, I'm a new entrant to this forum.
I'm pleased to share some of the crafts that my late aunt was adept at. Here is my favourite hand purse created in lovely pattern and colour! I've posted the same in the Crafts forum, but a friend redirected me here so that others could also have a look.

| Those knots are amazing - each one looks so precise. I bet it will last forever.
Is there some sort of wire or something under the giraffe, do you think? I can't imagine how she got that shape without some sort of architecture. |

| Indeed, Pagancat. Those are tight knots. She was known for such skills as I told in that thread. I have seen her do them, I have seen her hands go red and sore, trying to pull the wires, holding it for tightness... it was a tough work. But she did it for fun. She was at home, so she had time. She had another talent. Music. She was a adept artist in playing the stringed instrument Veena. I'll discuss more in another thread, about this.
The Giraffe has a stuffing, which has to be made as it was worked with. Again, this work is also very stiff. the legs don't bend. I have seen her stuff aluminium foil, rolled in properly. Probably at the stomach area, some cotton is used. |

| Did she always do animals? Or were there some kind of more abstract designs? |

| She was not creative but very talented in skill. These factors I came to realize as after thoughts. She need some basic ideas or designs to work with. I'll take their picture and post it on this thread some time later. Most are in my mother's house showcase. |

| Here is another bag from nylon threads, probably worked like a crochet. This is a bag not used for years - though strong, it is not very convenient. But again a work of art. Click the image for an enlarged view.

Thank you for sharing your Aunt's work.
Where did she find all the beads and materials for her crafts? Are they easy to find in your area?

| They were easy to find about 20-30 years back. But these sort of things have evolved into slightly different designs depending on the fancies. More ladies are not taking up hobbies as before, due to various other distractions what with increase in the number of working women. *Leisure* is not at hand! They make their lives restless, but from one angle, it becomes a necessity as one has to run the family, to make ends meet what with increasing cost of living. But some enterprising ladies make a small business out of their crafts. They are far and few though. There are shops selling these fancy materials.

| This is a Rexine bag, stiched with nylon thread - pieces joined to gether and also for design. Holes are punched along the edge at equidistance- one by one, single-hole hand punch machine. It's a shoulder bag. Now my DD uses it sometimes! Click the image for an enlarged view.

| The two Terries! Welcome! She had made a few other designs which were gifted away to those that asked. She was generous too. The amount of time and strain she expended on them was equal to the pleasure she derived in giving away. |

| I love beadwork. Those are some beautiful pieces. I have a few old ones I have bought in thrift stores or flea markets. Most of them are in storage but here are some of what I think are African Violets from early 1900's.
I always wished I could do beading, especially when I see old pieces like this or the books with all the intricate flower patterns, but I think it requires more patience than I have. Click the image for an enlarged view.
