I have a top load machine, the kind with no agitator. It's about 4 yrs old.
I always leave the top open when not in use.
It has started to smell really funny...kind of like a funky musty/moldy type smell. It is coming directly from inside the tub. So far the clothes coming out have no oder.
Here is what I have tried so far...
washing empty with really hot water and bleach
washing empty with borax
washing empty with vinegar and baking soda
If I had to guess, you may have a similar problem as our machine.
It may have something to do with the way the water discharge hose is
set up. Perhaps it is holding drain water that did not run all the way out, for
whatever reason. I do laundry almost every single day, but I did notice it is
worse on the days I do not wash. I've been down the bleach, vinegar and
borax road with you.
Once, I thought we had a fault washing machine, but we recently bought
this one, and it does the same thing. Is your hose designed like ours? It
runs up over a foot, then into a drain pipe which is tall. Seems like flawed
engineering at best, but that is what we have.
The only thing I have found to work well is to run the spin cycle again, or set the
machine to pump out again, which is a pain in the butt because I seem to forget
until I smell it.
Again, this is just a thought, it may not be your situation, but sounds like it.
