I just recently moved into a new home. It's a bungalow with a walkout deck which is levelled with an above-ground pool. There are few steps which take you into the garden area. In the far end of the garden there used to be a hot tub which sat on an approximately 6 ' X 6' concrete area. Now that the hot tub is removed, I don't know what to do with this area. To take out the concrete would involve too much work. I have a large patio set on the deck and therefore do not need another sitting area.
If you don't want to take the concrete out and you don't want it to be a patio, about the only thing I can think of is to use it as an area for a container garden. If you don't like the look of the concrete you can stain it or put something over top of it like a deck, flagstone, etc.
How about placing a water feature on it and flowers in pots under it. For example, I have a deep bowl bird bath in which I placed a small pump with a bamboo spigot. In it also I placed rocks (for the birds to stand on) and small, colorful ceramic objects, e.g., a turtle specifically made to hide the pump, a bird, and a frog. The water noise attracts birds, butterflies, and yes, even bees who all drink from it.
How about a Gazebo, all open, and grow climbing plants up and over it just as a feature, or build a wall around it, add a pond liner with lights, and have either a fish pond or a pond for water plants and wild life, how about painting black and white squares on it as a games board like chess etc, a wooden garden swing, with large plant containers and you can grow lavender, herbs ect, so as you swing, you enjoy the perfume from the plants and it becomes a sensory garden for quiet relaxasion and reading, a fire pit could be made above ground and it would keep it away from the wooden deck, there are lots of ideas that could be tossed your way, but without knowing your lifestyle, if you have young kids or any other info, or even a pic of the area/garden, it is hard to visualise what you are looking for by way of transformation, hope something jumps out at you, a plain slab of concrete aint going to make for a relaxing garden, so Good Luck and happy gardening.
