I would like your advice, please. Approximately three years ago, I had the exterior of my house painted. The painter had been recommended to me and truly seemed very honest. He said he purchased the very best paint to use. However, it is fading tremendously on the front of the house that faces east. I am so upset, but, of course, can do nothing because now the painter cannot be located. The house has to be painted again, but I am asking for your recommendations for a very good exterior paint. A picture of the house facing east is attached. The larger shrubs have been removed and lasagna method is being used in preparing beds for new plants.
Sorry about your predicament! Could it be perhaps that the dye in the paint is not resistent to sun fading? It may have been a good quality paint perhaps and whatever method it requires to create blue might be prone to sun fading.
We painted our house ourselves but I don't recall the paint---we just asked at the store for the best---making sure to check it's "warrenty life" on the can.
Tir has a good idea. Just ask for the best exterior paint at the store. Tell them what happened and they will show you your options. Most people who work the paint section know what they are doing.
I would definitely use Cabot's The Finish. This isn't exactly the best picture I have of our garage, but it's the one I can locate easily. Our garage faces South, so it takes a pretty strong beating from the sun. The gable is painted in Hale Navy for Ben Moore, but mixed up in Cabot's The Finish.
Thank you! We recently had the gable on the other side redone. It had 1x6's and 1x8's scabbed onto the bottom of the car siding that just looked ridiculous. When we went to pull those off to see what we were dealing with, it was like I was standing above my husband pouring a bag of mulch on his head! I've never seen so much rot before. But it's all brand new now and waiting to get the Hale Navy on it! It's been primed, but it rained yesterday, so now we have to wait for it to dry out.
The only advice I have for you is when you repaint go lighter than the paint you have. Before we got our house painted I interviewed 14 painters and EVERY one of them said the darker the paint is the shorter the life span on your paint will be.
dangitgirl, they've never use Cabot's The Finish before. It's the only exterior paint I use. And I use dark colors. The stuff is guaranteed not to fade and I've never had it fade on me. Painted a door and the window trim in '01 at a previous house and it's still the same color today as it was when I did it. Currently, the photo above of our garage is still in Navy, no fading at all. The front is done and the gables in this old house are being painted in the same Hale Navy as the garage. Don't discount dark colors until you've tried Cabot's The Finish!
