I am wondering if there is anyone out there who may know the potential risks my husband and I may have faced when removing "peel and stick" tile from our basement family room. Our home was built 1970 and we removed the top layer of carpet and then found old tiles underneath. The tiles came off quite easily...one or two hits with a scraper and they almost seemed to "pop" off. Most broke into two to three pieces, but no need to scrape or sand. Under the tiles was a thin layer of what seemed to be a black adhesive. We left that alone and laid a new floor on top. Later, we talked with our neighbors who led us to believe that our tiles most likely contained asbestos. We did all of this work with no masks or gloves and we had no coverings on our vents and the air conditioning was on. Wow, do I feel dumb even writing that...please help. Are we at major risk of asbestos damage to us and our home??? Or, like my dad keeps telling me - there is no need to worry because you did not sand the area and it was a one time exposure, if exposed at all." Thank you in advance for your help! |

If the tiles did have asbestos in them, then the fact that some of them broke means that you could have been exposed to asbestos, sanding would have definitely made it worse if there was asbestos in the adhesive too, but anytime something with asbestos in it breaks it can send asbestos fibers into the air. Obviously the more asbestos you're exposed to the higher the risk that it'll have a bad effect years from now, but even a small amount has the potential to be harmful. If you still have one of the tiles you removed, it might be worth getting it tested to see if it has asbestos in it, if it doesn't then there's nothing to worry about but if it does, you might check to see if there's someone who can come out and do some tests to see if there's any in that room or in your vents and remove it if they find any. Probably won't be cheap, but asbestos is one of those things you don't really want to take chances with. |

Yeah I agree with Ecrane3. But I think I have never seen this in my life. I always hire contractors to do this. Maybe till tomorrow i'll call one of my contractors and ask him about this and I'm sure he will help you alot.
