I have a community garden project where I am 'beautifying' an old limestone Catholic girls school, now a community centre, and I've planted about a dozen cannas along a SW-facing wall. We got a load of gorgeous compost this week, and I spread about 4"-6" over the plants, which have been in for about a month and are about a foot and a half high now.
I thought afterwards, is this going to smother them? They're rhizomatous, will they suddenly be too deep? They were sturdy, with good thick stems and 3-4 leaves each. A mix of Richard Wallace, an unknown very vigorous red with disappointingly thin but frequent bloom, and Wyoming. They were all overwintered and propagated from my previous plantings.
As I spread the compost, I also worked in moisture crystals because the people there are not into watering. (This is a labour of love on my part, they don't know what they're getting.) There are other plants I'm putting in as well, but I'm most worried about the majestic canna statement.
Advice? I can take pics if that would help.
