Just found out that our son has been arranging a trip to the Chihuly studio as a FD present. I was so jazzed seeing the pictures he took when the granddaughters class went there that he figured it would be something I'd enjoy. Wow, and how. Unless there is a hitch it is supposed to be next Wednesday morning. Gotta clear out the camera card and charge the battery ! Am I anxious ? nae, merely ecstatic !

Oh, Robert, What a treat! I'm sure you look forward with LOTS of anticipation.

i'm amazed at the table from one slab of wood.

best i ever did was a 28 inch wide poplar interior board which promptly split overnight with humidity. sigh.

The Travel Channel recently had a show on 'over-the-top' homes and one of them had an enormous Chihuly chandelier. The cost was absurd, something around $400,000 as I recall, and consisted of some 450 individual pieces hanging on a framework. Forgot the actual figures, but that was the general area. Could that be called "conspicuous consumption" ?

HGTV has a show called Offbeat America and they did one with million dollar homes and one also had a Chihuly chandelier. $800,000 for theirs.

Robert,

I just thought I'd add a splash of color to this old thread with a few links to some of Chihuly's work that Kell has just seen. I have shared a link to this thread in the same thread these are posted in because I knew Kell would appreciate your trip as well.

I'd ask Kell to start a new thread so these photos weren't lost in the weekly chatters thread in the Coleus Forum. She said she took lots of photos. Hopefully she will do that and if so, I will come back here and post a link to it.

I hope life is well in your neck of the woods. I haven't seen much of you lately.

Thinking of you with many fond thoughts,

Thank you Janet. Kell's pictures are much better than mine. We had the great pleasure of a private tour and I was only 'admonished' once, for moving around taking pictures of a bowl being blown. Seems I was in the way of a gaffer carrying a punt with molten glass on it. I'd really like to see more of Kell's pictures.

Editing: I see after looking at Kell's pictures that she was at a show rather than the studio. Her links are really great.

Gosh Robert. Can't be getting in the way of someone carrying molten glass. Might get burnt!

Whenever she posts them, I'll be sure to let you know.

Have a great weekend!

Hi Everyone
Two years ago I was in Fla where there was a Chihuly exhibit in a botanical park. It was unbelievable... a canoe sitting on the water was filled to the top with very organic glass 'pods' of every size...large out of this world appearing plants standing tall along the trails - towering over like huge mushroooms in fantastic colors. Thin and long glass rods appearing like some kind of glass worm invasion and Spheres like only Chihuly can do were floating on ponds and in fountains. Enter the exotic plant houses, and you would see Chihuly pieces rivaling the exotic plants. Chihuly pieces were mixed in everywhere with the cactus and tropical plants..looking very much at home with their organic plant shapes. It was beautiful. I think I have some photos on a camera card and if I do, I will post them. I heard a few months ago the exhibit was in Atlanta.

Oh Please post them. I love this guys work.

Can you imagine how "drab" things must look when the exhibits come down. What could possibly top his over the top creations?

I wonder how long it takes him to set things up at these exhibits.
