I bought a small purple datura from a nursery and planted it in the ground about 6 weeks ago. It was doing SO well, and then one morning two weeks ago, I went out and found the leaves were all chewed off. I dug it up and put it in a pot, to put it in a shady spot to hopefully recover with some TLC, and that's when I found the well disguised HUGE hornworm on one stem (how DO they hide so well?). I removed him, and left the plant to recover or give up the ghost. It recovered well, to the point where I decided to put it back in the ground, and it's been doing great since. Until this morning, when again, the leaves were gone, and there was ANOTHER hornworm. I don't dare move the plant again. It just seems strange, I have 4 white daturas nearby, about the same age, but they aren't being hit on by hornworms, nor are my brugmansias. Is there something about the purple dats that makes them more attractive to hornworms? Or is it just my luck, since I've never grown the purple ones before?
