Hmmm...never saw it like that...how interesting! Pep - you always give me a new perspective on things!

Janet - How adorable! So colorful and so much personality!!!! And Mrs. Morphetta is cute too! LOL...Just kidding. I love your stuff...seen it in the other forums...I'm with Pep - I want one! A Dragonfly would be just perfect for me! I have over 300 dragons in various mediums...but none in my garden yet!

Okay, now this one has absolutely nothing to do with a garden, and its not even underwater - but its about a fish!!!! Cowboy and my SIN Chris caught this one yesterday... and it sure tasted GOOD!

WOW! I finally made it. I don't normally check the entire Tropical Gardening Forum. I just found the other thread by accident and saved it to be watched when I saw the coolness of the thread.

When I saw that the new one had gotten started, I went back to the old one and posted a link to this new thread. Y'all left me hanging there in the ocean! HAHAHAHAHA Heeeeeeeeeeeeeeelppp!!!! ROFL

I knew you all had talked about it and I kept waiting for a new thread. Then shazamm! There it was! HAHAHAHA

OK now that you all have listened to me rant (yeah right, Moi rant????) Yer fergiven! :-) Man o Man I feel better already! I'm here and all is well now. Whew!!!

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

OK so ya like feathers do ya Ms. Shari Sue??? I love the wispiness of it.

Dragons??? Oh man oh man, I do want to make a dragon. Especially after reading Eragon and the 2nd book in that series Eldest. It's on our list of very near future projects. 300 dragons is a LOT!!!!

Zany - a featherstar is actually an animal ! Related to starfish, it is an invertebrate echinoderm. Their real name is crinoids They can move around on their tiny little feet...waaaay cooool to my way of thinkin.

John...Outstanding pic of the Moray's teeth! We are planning (tentatively) to go back to the states for 3 weeks or so around Thanksgiving. Other than that, and an occasional trip to an outer island, we will definately be here - as I believe will Cowboy and Lexy. What time of year are you contemplating - now you've got us all excited!!!!! JB is already talking about where he will take you!

Janet - I've been collecting them for a very long time! And I LOVED both Eragon and Eldest. Have you seen the movie?

Hiya Pepper!

And here is a Scrawled Filefish - looks like filigre to me...an Alutera Scriptus:

Shari, I loved both of them. I haven't seen the movie yet. I thought I saw where a third book The Inheritance (I think I remember that right) was supposed to come out in March. That was about the time I was reading the books. I waited and waited and then started reading other books, Nora Roberts aka JD Robb, and Bertrice Small and completely forgot about the third book until just now. I think I will look it up and see if it's available yet.

I'd love to have a copper dragon (styles like Saphira) with a butane lighter installed in the mouth so that it would breathe fire! HAHAHAHAHA Am I asking for the moon? Or what??? We WILL figure out how to make that idea work, or die trying! Connie is the genius on our sculptures, so it will be up to her to "make it happen". I am just the one that comes up with some of these off the wall ideas!

Back to the thread... that fish is beautiful. All of the creatures that you all see are so "foreign" to me.

Ok I'm hooked. I've been a member of DG for over 6 years now and this is one of the coolest threads I've chanced up on. Shari you have pics of things I can only dream of seeing 1st hand. I love anything and everything about the ocean. I can be on total overload, go to the beach and suddenly "Its five o'clock somewhere" I've thought many time about learning to dive but always something hindered me either the cost or time or...the list goes on. But anyway keep those pics coming and if you stop the thread there is always personal email;)

John and I keep wondering if people are enjoying our little bits of sea life...so its nice to have the feedback. Pepper, Zany, Janet, Carol, Lance, and all the rest would love to have you join our little group.

Zany - I never gave you a big hello - and that is my bad. I just felt like you belonged, since I had been seeing your postings for such a long while...please forgive, and big WELCOMES!!!

Janet - if you find out that the third one is out - let me know...I check the library about once every couple a weeks...but I really want to read that one too!

Here is some soft coral - people always think of coral as hard and brittle - not this - its as fine as baby's hair.

This was taken last week at a bend in the Eel river just below the company town of Scotia. The water temp is probably about 45 f right now and that is a freshwater snail. Years ago this area was great fishing for rainbow trout and this river lived up to it's name when it was full of eels. Now it runs so low in the summers that the fishing is all but gone and I have not seen an eel in years but we have some beautiful rocks :~P

We used to have this test of "machohood"...who would be the first to jump in the river from this high rock, as an indication that winter was over. This was back in California. The river was actually a stream of snow melt in the shade out by Joshua Tree. That was where I learned all about "shrinkage"...LOL!

This pic kinda looks like a river, but its actually the reef at low tide...caught a couple of eels unprepared.

Hi Folks!

Great photos. I'm curious Shari. Are the Yellowtail Kingfish the same thing that sushi is made from when you order yellowtail?

It's been hot, Hot and then it was HOT here today. Hubby had to spray for mosquitos. They've been soooooooo bad here. West Nile is in the city somewhere and we are concerned. He told me tonight that it's supposed to be really bad this summer, so we're gonna try and stay on top of the mosquito control.

I would love to have jumped in any water today just to cool off.

Actually, we were just sitting out back and it wasn't too bad tonight. He sprayed both the front and back yard tonight after I watered. It really did help a whole lot.We did get nibbled on a time or two, but nothing like in the past several evenings. These mosquitos are so tiny that you can't feel them until they are filled with your blood. If it's dark you can't see them and they've Gotcha!

Yes...I was going to say the same thing about the Yellowfin. Yellowfin Tuna is what is used in sushi...Yellowtail is a lagoon fish, and we don't eat it...

We have a serious mosquito problem here too,. We joke that the most common perfume on island is Eau de Off. But it doesn't seem to work anymore. More like an attractant! The men say they take Nina and I with them everywhere cuz we are the targets so the little buggers leave the guys alone! Arrgh!

Tina - isn't brain coral the freakiest?? I can see why it is used in all those monster movies of the 50's and 60's...

While I look for my pic of a brain coral - check this out...its a little blurry - these guys are small! This is a Christmas tree worm...can you see why its called that?

Okay, we are about packed, Katie is bringing a laptop so there is a chance we can post from our destination during the next week...all day travel ahead of us for now, will look for you guys tomorrow when I can...

Shari, I think Christmas Tree worms are the coolest, so beautiful and yet so shy...you can wave water at them and they disappear into their tubes, but within moments, re-appear to full bloom!! And they come in a wide variety of colors!!! Here is a brownish one...

i'm gone now for sure!!!. WALMART! Here we come!!!

Here's a blue one...wish we could get as close as John does...they are really something - YES! I'm exhausted today...had chile verde parties for the last two nights...lots of fun! Then today, I did all my indoor chores, (BORING), and finally got outside. Did some repotting, trimmed an eight ft. ti plant that was just getting topheavy, planted some seeds for a mixed flower container...say maybe you folks can help me...I have an aphelandra that got overwatered...I guess the roots just couldn't keep up with the water, cuz I dug it up (not very big - just a baby) and the root ball was very wet - but the pot seemed to be draining okay...strange. I dried everything off and put dry potting soil in and repotted the aphelandra...did I do right? I want this to survive, so any and all advise will be welcomed.

I am not familiar with Aphelandra's but if the roots were soggy for too long they may have been showing signs of rot. If the roots were still firm and white you should be fine with it.

If they were yellowing or turning brown you should remove as much of the bad root sections as possible so the healthy parts can grow without fighting the rot.

Also, once the roots have been cut back to healthy sections only, it sometimes helps to give them a quick dip in a tablespoon of bleach to a quart of water solution before replanting. I managed to save a lot of overwatered plants over the years doing this.

Curly is soooo cute!!! Lots of fun in store for you in near future! Nope I wasn't at that dive. It was taken at a place called Troy's coralhead, which is a favorite for the advanced divers. They can get real low and look up to see all the sharks swimming around because of all the schools of fish that hang out there. Don't know what those guys were called, sorry. These are more my speed:

DD and I are off to the warehouse for more handicraft sorting pretty soon but wanted to get this pick out to you all. This is a good shot of the cornet/trumpet/pipe fish (people call them different things)...with the other fish in the pic you can really tell how thin and reedy these guys are:

Texas-Oklahoma have been almost ready to join the underwater world. Floods everywhere and no chance for clearing any time soon. Reaching for an alltime high in the rain reading any day now. I started my own itty-bitty pond about 4-5 weeks ago and during that time it has rained daily...been watching to see if my "pond" was going to run over the sides.
Please don't laugh...posting pictures of the above.

We are also prone to flooding now. Actually it did flood this morning and early afternoon. Here is a post I have copied and pasted.

We got over 6 inches of rain at work these last 2 days. We actually got flooded out in some areas. The island garden and the arbor were flooded when I left this morning. At the island the water was half-way up the wall when I left. Our roads were flooded in places and the lake was higher than I have ever seen it. For those of you who don't know, I work at a botanical garden. lol. Fun til bad weather hits. lol

I left about 10:45 this morning since I was losing my brakes on my golf cart, it was getting treacherous, and because I was so wet I was squishy and left water where ever i went. My jeans were so wet it wasn't funny. The jeans were so wet that when my mom felt them several hours later they were wetter than when they come out of the washer. My boss kinda laughed when he saw me and let me go home. I was really happy cause I was also getting cold.

When I finally left I went to take the gravel road that would take me to the hwy and didn't get very far on there because it was flooded out really bad over by the bridge. I talked to some guys who were there then we all left and I went to take the hwy home. Well, I get by a major subdivison there called Oakshire and there was water over the road there. Luckily it wasn't bad enough I couldn't get thru. I just had to be careful. I made it thru there and there weren't anymore high water spots. It was a crazy day for everything around here.

Water, water everywhere!! And the worse possible weekend too. We have tons of stuff going on this weekend at work.

So...why in the world would anyone laugh at such a beautiful and obviously pleasurable example of what a lot of hard work and determination can accomplish? It's Lovely!!!!

Sounds like you all are practising for some tropical adventures whether you want to or not! Global warming...I tell ya, pretty soon the equator is gonna look like a girdle (geesh - does anyone even know what those are anymore???)

I think I'm punch-drunk. Worked in that ice cold warehouse all day on handicrafts...the smell (not unpleasant) of the weavings must have turned my brain (alleged) to mush. So I will shut up and put up a pic instead. This is a good shot of some temple coral at the early stage. These aren't very big - but it will give you an idea of how cool they will look when they get 10 and 20 ft. high.

I love rope lights. The day after Christmas, I almost always hit up Walmart to see if they have any left and buy 'em up. I use them everywhere!

Several years back, I found a pond light on the clearance table at Home Depot for $3.00. I bought it thinking to give it to my sister, Connie because she already had a pond. The next day, my hubby brings home a pond form that he got on the clearance aisle at a local hardware. It was $20. There was a small hole towards the top of it and he used a soldering gun to heat the plastic up and melt it back together. It held water for several years, until Hurricane Rita buckled it in half. I no longer have a pond any more. I did FINALLY give the pond light to Connie!

He's still pouting but hopefully he will get over it. Curly had to go to the vet today to get a tick out of his butt and to get a checkup. 8-10 wks old, 2 Ibs, and all in all in good health so far. Has to be checked for lukemia next time and get a couple of shots.

Islanshari, I so appreciate your beautiful pictures! Thank you so much for sharing with us. Seeing your posts gives me a glimpse of how beatiful the ocean can be.

I saw your entry on the ticks. I used to work as a pet groomer and in the spring and summer most dogs and some of the cats would have them. Some of the poor dogs would come in with the ticks on them by the hundreds! There are many different kinds of ticks and they can range in size from poppy seed to a bit over a quarter inch. The dogs/cats can actually get what is called "tick paralysis" from having so many where they can literally no longer walk. I had an occasion or two when the owner of the pet had to carry them in but after I removed most of the ticks they could run right out the door with their owners. I sometimes wished I could put the owners through what they put those poor dogs and cats through!

My boys have been all over the world with me, and they are getting old, but they are still my babies and I sure don't want them getting anything like this horrid tick! I may start keeping them completely inside! Of course they won't like that at all, but I sure don't want them getting that ugly thing!

Let's look at something prettier instead, shall we? Here is a Rabbitfish, amongst others - guess he's looking through the coral for a carrotfish. Groan, oh that was bad!

We have four ticks that are found in this region.

Dermacentor occidentalis (Pacific Coast Tick) ~ not too bad here
Dermacentor variabilis (American Dog Tick) ~ quite common
Ixodes pacificus (Western Black Legged Tick) This one is most common in this area.
Rhipicephalus sanguineus (Brown Dog Tick) ~ this one is not common outside of kennels which I have never used for my dogs.

I am forever removing them from the cats at work that come to eat in the evening. I have one big Tom Cat that must lay in tick brush all day because I remove 10-20 ticks off him each week. I have learned to wear white socks with my pants tucked into them when hiking in tall grassy areas and to make sure we check for hitchhiking ticks when we get home.

I use frontline on my dog and she has never had a tick or fleas but my friend's dog gets them when they go hunting. We don't take them to the vet for removal in fact we don't go to the Dr. to have them removed if they get on us. We just gently pull them straight out and then destroy them or if lyme desease has been reported in the area we put it in a jar and take it in for testing.

They are icky but not bad enough to panic over :~)

Zany, that pie sound delicious! I do love lemon meringue pie. I can't say that I've ever made one though. I'd love to have the recipe so I could try it out in my new oven. :-)

You all were talking about ticks earlier. One day I saw this THING on Grace, my lab/golden mix. She'd been hunting the weekend before. It was HUGE!!!! It was a tick that was so swollen it was about the size of a first grader's pencil eraser.

My Mom was talking about ticks also in an email. She said they were having problems in Virginia with them really bad.

The Blue Tangs are about 8-12 inches when full grown and a favorite meal for eels and other reef predators...we actually got to see a spotted moray take a tang during a night dive and it was an amazing site...did you guys know that a fish will swallow another fish head first all the time?????? You fisherman out there know that when you fish for tunas that you must count to ten before setting a hook on a lip-hooked bait...that's because a tuna must first turn the bait around to swallow it...don't know where I'm going with this but after reading the posts left since I've been off island...okay, Katie slapped me around and I'm back...Shari, we need to talk!!! No, absolutely not. I learned from years ago to look with you eyes and not your hands...as a rule, anything that is the color of this worm, or, mustard colored, will produce intense sting/pain. I have seen other divers touch/kill things and pay for their actions by soaking in vinegar just to try and ease the pain...

some micro-organisms in the water you can not avoid...such as thimble jelly fish larvae, there is no avoiding them and can produce intense stinging and itching but normally doesn't last more than a week...locally called "sea itch" happens certain times of the year. When Thimble Jellyfish are here, the numbers of turtles near the surface feeding on them is amazing...normally the jellies and their larvae are only in the first 15 feet of the water column. When you have to come to the surface, you can use the purge button on your regulator to use the bubbles to make a safe path out of the water without getting stung!!!! Air supply permitting of course!!!

I have lived in and around the sea nearly all my life (except for a few years in Colorado), and my biggest fears of the water are differrent jellyfish - pretty, but they terrify me, and barracuda. Sharks pretty much leave you alone if - - (John, listen up!), you aren't trying to steal the spirit from a great white by taking his picture! No, seriously, sharks out in our lagoon aren't gonna bother anyone that isn't bothering them...stingrays are just beautiful - that accident with the Aussie guy was a total freak acccident...and giant octopi are too deep for us to worry about. The fire coral can cause immense misery - so you avoid it. Just like any other place on earth, if you learn the environment, and treat it well, you will be fine.

Mornin' Janet!

A fireworm stays a fireworm as far as I know. I have seen them over 12 inches long and can devoure anything in their path...A bristle worm with fire-eating/breathing teeth...I would love to take my tomato catepillars down under and see how tough they are against a Bearded Fire worm!!!

Trip was fairly eventful...police at the hotel we stayed...on the night we got there and the night we left...Atlanta...nuff said...at least they weren't there on my account...this time!!!

Zany, those "desks" that the blenny is hiding in are known as Corallites, collectively, they make up the much larger Great Star Coral or Large Star coral. At night, the Corallites have tiny polyps or "hairs" that extend out for feeding.

Here is a Great Star Coral during the day with the polyps all retracted, non-feeding mode...

I know a bunch of folks are glad to see the sun come out...I have been reading about all the flooding and rains...I am happy that you'll have some sun now for a few days!!!

The pictured feather duster is living on a sponge rather than the star coral in the previous image. The feather duster worms are tube-dwellers, that is, when threatened, they retreat down a small tube until the threat has vanished. The tubes look like straws, about the size of one of those coffee stirring sticks...just like the Christmas Tree worms...previously posted here...

Great Star Coral lookes like a sponge on first glance. What amazingly interesting creatures they are. Of course , like most land lubbers, I have seen and held little fragments of coral but it is dead, hard and spiney. I am curious. Is living coral soft and pliant like it looks? All these amazing creatures live in and around it but what does coral eat? and soes anything eat coral or just the creatures it harbors? LOL I guess I am asking a lot of questions about things I was probably taught in grade school but that was many years and years ago and I just can't remember.

Oh boy! Reef biology 101. LOL!! There are hard corals, and soft corals. Some hard corals look like soft corals when its polyps are fully extended, and vice versa. Sea Fans and Whips are generally listed as soft corals, even though they have a more rigid horny skeleton like the harder corals. It is all an amazing adventure! Corals eat planktonic food that is gathered by the tiny hairs on the polyps. Many forms of algae live in and on coral heads, which is what little "Nemos" and other fish eat when they are around the coral. The most dangerous predator for coral is the "crown of thorns" starfish. I'm sure that many people, more knowledgable than I will take exception to what I have said here - but that is just a real quick identifier. Here is a picture of a Red Whip Coral -

Which photo are you referring to Zany? This last post, or the one I posted a while back of the c-o-t? Yes - it feeds on live corals...one of the reasons the Great Barrier Reef in Oz is having troubles...

The C-o-T's only real predator is the Triton Trumpet. And they can't keep up with the damage...so whenever we see one, we turn it over and put rocks on it, so the fish can eat it.

I was refering to the one on the Great Star coral above. Is the Crown of Thorns large, over populated or is is just a voracious appitite that makes it so damaging? What a shame that something so pretty is causing problems.

I guess that turning them over with rocks is the only way the fish can get them? They look pretty thorny at that!

I think there is some confusion here. John's picture was of a Great Star Coral with a "Split-Crown" Feather Worm on it. Neither of those is a bad thing. The split crown is just one of many creatures that live on or near corals.

Here is a pic of the Crown of Thorns Starfish. These monsters get huge!

We are in the middle of a huge storm. My patio went sailing by my upstairs window a while ago. I'm actually surprised that we still have power...that's usually the first to go. Its really a shame too, cuz the Scuba Club is out with a big dive trip...been planning it for over a month, and then we get this storm. I sure hope the tender tummies among them took their dramamine! There is a "Small Craft Advisory" warning...the fishing boats came in... But this was their first trip on this big Trimaran and I know that the die-hards among them will want to stay out as long as possible...bet that's what John would want in the same situation - eh photoking?

Hello my friends! We are all safe. The bigger, badder storm never materialized. I was mistaken about the boat the divers were on ... it was an LCU. Big, strong, and they were fine...actually had a good couple of dives because it wasn't a superhot day, found good places in lea of islands and had lots of fun. All my worry was just a waste of energy. Here though we had some damage...The cover of our patio was blown off and some of the cross bars were broken...lots of plants blown over...some may not recover. Today is clean up day. It turns out it really wasn't a bad storm, but I am on a corner - so got the brunt of it. No one was hurt that we know of, but just property damage around the island. We have definately been through worse. Thank you all for your concerns - sorry to have caused worry.

But, ya see, I be a sponsor! Tee hee! But that is one of the reasons our lagoon is so human friendly - no masses of tourists handling it in ignorance. When we (read all the islanders) take our guests out into the water, we make sure they know how to properly treat a reef. Right John? More damage is done unintentionally by ignorance than by storms. Funny thing is I am not afraid of the water and have almost drown several times when I got in too deep and forgot I can't swim. It isn't bad in a pool because I can push to the surface for air and walk out or swim underwater to the edge. But I can't reach the surface if the water is too deep.

LOL!! The ability to sink is a great commodity for divers! Most of them (including my DH - who plays Scuba Santa with no padding), wear numerous weights on a belt to help them get down under the water...Too bad you can't bottle that talent, you could make enough to pay your way here for swimming lessons!

Here is a shot of various types of corals...and a little fishy hiding from the camera. The round one is razor coral...aptly named I assure you!

Nice to see some of you in the chat room...I have never noticed it open before and just gave it a spin tonight for the first time...kinda busy...folks talk and type fast...too many conversations going on at once but it was fun and I look forward to joining in again soon...I see there hasn't been a post here after Miss Shari's razor coral so I will add this for tonight and call it a day...diving at night presents it's own set of issues, not to mention very dark subjects that are masters of camoflauge at any time...this longsnout was shot in one of the canals in shallow water...on snorkel, amongst the beer cans and barracudas...have a good night all...

Looks like that ship is a "host" for lots of marine life. So many fish swimming and the coral, etc. growing.

In my mind, I can hear Celine Dion (or whatever her name is) singing the song from the Titanic! HAHAHAHA

Shari, I'd love to see more photos of the dives, or what did you call them...Wreck Dives. Sad for the folks who were on these ships, but very interesting for us on this thread.

John your sea horse is beautiful.

I've had 3 grand babies here off and on for a few days, so haven't been able to take the time to comment properly. I love all of the photos and have really enjoyed my "island friendship" with you folks.

Ann, he probably used a strobe light to get the picture...don't know for sure - he'll let us know eventually. Ha ha.

Janet - yes - the ships or wrecks, because some are planes, copters, etc. can be fascinating. Most of these are relics of WWII...this was a big battle site, there are lots. And all the sea life sort of treats them like a new subdivision or a high rise condo! In fact the Scuba Club just bought a copter from the Army that they are going to sink for the high school biology class and the scuba club to watch as an on=going project. I was against this for ecological reasons, but they convinced me that it was just giving the sealife a new place to grow, and to watch the timing of the growth would be a good lesson for the folks out here.

John, as my daughter used to say "that seahorse picture is so clear it almost looks real"

The razor coral sounds deadly but it is probably a good defense from predators.

We have a jetty here that was built using old cars, washing machines, chunks of old concrete roads and whatever else was available. It is teeming with ocean life. I would rather see it used to provide homes for fish than dumped in a landfill as long as they don't include batteries or other toxic garbage.

I agree about the jetty. If we can put our garbage to some sort of use, that is all for the good!

Yeah, WWII is not just history out here. Relics are everywhere, and some of the islands still have bunkers, tanks, cannon etc...right out where ya walk past em everyday. We occasionally find unexploded ordnance (big bullets and small bomb type thingys), either washed up on shore, or unburied when someone does some digging. There is even one island that has two towns on it...Betty and Lana...both named for pin up girls of WWII.

Here is another shot of 1sh ship:

Hey everyone!

Just got back from a road trip to the other side of the island...out east, there are wild plumerias growing all throughout the bush...took the clippers with me and got 4 cuttings, white with yellow centered flowers...then stopped by a friend's place and she gave me a red/pink one that is not rooted yet but has buds on it...We watched some big waves coming up through the blow holes and enjoyed the breeze for a change...hot and dry here, stringing up the hammock this afternoon, a cold bevvy, the chores can wait...

Good afternoon folks. Hubby and I went surf fishing last night. His brother and a few other friends went with us. We took the 4 wheelers to ride along the beach. We rented a kayak to get the bait out further. The "boys" were hoping to catch a waybigo shark! Yeah right! And THEN what would we do with it? HAHAHAHA

We got there just as it was getting dark, so I didn't even get any photos. We found several crabs that washed up as the tide was coming in and used those as bait. I grabbed one with my bare hands (first time for everything!) without getting pinched. Though they fished all night, nothing was caught except a small crocker with a net. Didn't matter to me or them. We had a lot of fun. Wind was pretty ferocious so we didn't get to build a bonfire.

We stayed until 5 am this morning and came home and showered, breakfasted and crashed. Sand is everywhere! Lots of cleaning to do.

I thought about you island folks many times last night, and always with a big smile.

Actually they have algal cells in their mantles that provide nearly all of the nutrients they need. Its kind of like photosynthesis in plants. But the type of algea is determined when they are microscopic. At the farm there were vats of blues, greens, reds, purples...all separated by color. It was fascinating. And I guess it works - these guys can live around 200 years if they aren't harvested. The myths of men being caught in their closing valves is extreeeeeemmmmmly unlikely, because they close up incredibly fast when any thing "threatening" comes by...if you blow a bubble toward them - they will close faster than you can snap your fingers.

Zany - tide pools are fascinating, aren't they? You never know what you might encounter.

The clownfish pretty much live in anemones. They (the fish) are covered with a slime-like mucus that protects them from the anemone's stinging tentacles. Yes, that hole in the middle is the mouth. Anemones eat planktonic plants and animals, much the way corals do. The tentacles sting helps collects this food, and also protects them from predators - Butterfly fish in particular.

John...when you asked for pictures of clownfish, did I misunderstand? Did you mean these little dudes, or the Clown Triggerfish that I posted? mea culpa if I posted the wrong ones...

Yes, when we lived down south we spent a lot of time at the tide pools down below San Pedro and were amazed at the ever changing life that would appear as the tides went out. A baby octopus chasing around in a pool, sardines trapped as the tide went out, lots of sea urchins and star fish, crabs and other critters that kept my kids busy for many a day. LOL, that troll does get around ;~} I think the ornery critter has relatives on every continent so for them to inhabit the islands is not beyond the realm of possibilities. I think I heard that sea sprites are easier to control since they are limited to life in the water and dry up and blow away if they try to come ashore but they can wreak havoc on a boat.

Since I seem to be wearing a dunce hat, as someone here has suggested, I guess that means I am too dumb to make any more posts here...I'll be in the compost pile.

Whoa there John, I don't know nuthin" bout no dunce cap but I do know compost and you definately are not compost material! So get back here in the blue waters and keep posting those extraordinary pictures of under water life so I can continue having dreams of being a mermaid. I am living life vicariously through the lovely waters in all these magnificent pictures.

John...when pepper mentioned the hat to me, it made me laugh...this was on another forum...she was hoping to get the same reaction from you...the hat was cuz you thought we weren't interested. She did not mean to imply that you were dumb. Please don't do this. It would be a shame to stop these postings, but I am not going to continue if you don't. Maybe we've done enough at that...this one is getting too long anyway, and I am not good enough to carry a third by myself.
