Hi
Yes it is an ibis, I rely a lot from photographer friends from which to get my subject matter. They can get to places I cannot and use lenses I do not have and provide me with beautiful wildlife and flowers.
Where can I see some of your work? Birds are especially hard with the detail in their feathers, but I love their colors and especially the water sparkling around them.

Yes, it is hard to get good reference material! I love the Birdforum site, their gallery has some wonderful photos of birds from all over the world, but you know you can't copy pictures...it is a great site to get ideas and to use as a reference.

Your are good, but I am sure you have heard that before. You have water and reflections down very well! I will go thru my files this afternoon and download a few pics. I work in soft pastel and oil mostly - I entered a state duck stamp competition last year and came in second place, but right now I am in school and have very little time to paint.

Are you a member of WetCanvas?

if you google in what you are looking for in Google and go to their image section.. you can get a lot of reference material there. However some of it is copyrighted.

I have been at Wet Canvas for years. I just don't participate much anymore. Life gets busy and then it gets slow. :)

Hi
Georgart53, If i go to wetcanvas can I see your stuff there? I don't know what to look for. True life can get slow.
And BHavana that is great you came in second for the duck stamp competition. I would love to enter one, just never have.
No I am not a member of wetcanvas. The site seems a little confusing but it might be a good place for ideas.
Granted there seems to be some good comments on where to buy products but I usually buy everything from a place called Binders in Charlotte, NC and order my frames from a wholesaler in Tennessee.

I like wetcanvas, but I am not a consistant member, I have been too busy lately to paint, and sometimes it depresses me to see too many other people doing it, if that makes sense.

It is a great site, though, for ideas, for sharing with other artists, and learning about new materials. They have forums for every medium and every type or style of art. I would definately recommend it, for pros or beginners and everyone inbetween

Hi
The painting is oil on canvas, water-based oils as I like the quick way they dry and can still work like regular oils. I still coat all paintings with Soluvar.

Bhavana, you said you were going to download a few of your files. Since I am new in Dave's garden, I am not sure where you were going to show them.
And never stop painting. I can get discouraged too with so many artists out there, but we all have our own style and I think we can inspire each other. I am certainly inspired when I see more people doing what they love.

Soluvar? I used to just coat mine with a thin wash of oil paint.. Is Soluvar nicer to use?

I buy Liquitex low viscosity matte finish Soluvar because it does not yellow a painting, does not add a texture, is permanent, water resistant and does contain a UV protective element and enhances the colors once applied.
I always thin mine a little with mineral spirits and apply with a bristle hair brush, the inexpensive ones you can buy at paint stores, usually referred to a chip brushes. You do however have to apply it in a good light so you can see the reflection so you don't miss any spots and catch loose brush hairs.

this is my duck stamp entry that won 2nd place in Delware - but this is the actual painting BEFORE it was finished, there are ducks off in the distance behind the lighthouse, flying in that Y formation they fly in, and a few other touches, but you get the general idea. My brother has the original, and the only digital photos I have are of the painting in progress.

Surf Scoters are not the most attractive of the sea ducks, and it is VERY hard to find good pictures of them, since they rarely come inland and when they do, it is probably just to nest in some remote far off northern place...so reference material was a nightmare to find. The lighthouse is probably the reason I placed, it is the Harbour of Refuge Lighthouse on the Delaware Bay where it meets the Atlantic. Still, 2nd place was a good feeling, and I would like to try again in the future when I am done school, right now every spare minute is spent studying.
