I have a few varieties of perinnials I recently planted that recommend shearing or pinching after the bloom has faded. Are these the same thing? If not, how far down do you shear? I assume also you pinch the old blossom off just below it. Is that accurate? Thanks in advance!
They accomplish the same thing (also known as deadheading), pinching is more useful on plants where there aren't a ton of flowers and you can easily remove one spent bloom at a time. If there are lots of blooms, sometimes it's easier to take scissors and shear them all off at once instead. Same purpose, same end result, just different methods. Pinching is also sometimes used to refer to pinching out the growing tips of plants to make them bushier, but since you specifically mentioned faded blooms I assume they meant deadheading.
