We tried to put some wood into the ground to put a couple of shelves on to hold some stuff off the ground so it doesn't get ruined by the rain and mud.

I don't think we thought it out right? Anyway.. couldn't get the second shelve to work on top of the first.

For ground contact, bricks, concrete (blocks, slabs, or poured), or gravel that can give an "above grade" lift to the wood seems to be best.

Some wood species can survive for a while with direct soil contact, but I would not count on long term survival anywhere in Texas. Treated and creosoted posts eventually sucumb to water and bugs.

Good luck.

Listen don't try to use ordinary wood. Just try to use only waterproof wood which nevr gets damage due to because it resists water absoption. Moreover, Paint that wood from the bottom to increase the life of your stuff.

Cheers.
