Is this the right place to get help with sodding a lawn? I'll try it.

I need to put sod down on an area that's approx. 300 sq. ft. This area has never had grass; it's heavily infested with weeds. I need to get rid of the weeds before sodding. I have to complete the project within 2 weeks.

I plan to sod with bahia. County laws don't allow me to put a lawn sprinkler in this area. Bahia is commonly used here in such areas.

I've read that one way to eliminate the weeds before sodding is to use a shovel to divide the area into squares, dig down a few inches, and simply turn over each square. It would be a big job, but considering that it's 300 sqare feet, I can do it.

Another option is to spray with a herbicide.

I don't want to use a tiller. I'd have to rent a truck, then rent the tiller, and I'm trying to do this as cheaply as possible.

I plan on putting down a couple of inches of topsoil before I put the sod down.

Any suggestions?

You can rent a mini tiller. I paid about 60 bucks to rent one at Home Depot and it was totally worth it! It can definitely take care of 300 SF...

skaz421, just in case you decide to check back here (it's been awhile since you posted) I have a suggestion about how to get rid of the weeds.

I imagine it would be safe to use Round-Up to kill all the weeds, give it about a week or so, mow down the weeds as close to the ground as possible, use some sort of surface tool to work up the soil a bit (so the sod has something to 'mesh' with), and then lay your sod. I know nothing about the type of sod you mentioned, so I'm guessing the looser the top of your soil is the better. I'm also thinking that you CAN water SOME where you live, at least enough to get the sod started, hopefully!

Don't know if this helps or not but just thought I'd share my ideas. Good luck. ;o)
