I'm new to gourd growing...I have what could be a dumb question.

If the female flower with the little "nub" gourd baby on it doesn't get pollinated, does it just shrivel up? I have extra long handled vines that look great and several beautiful gourds hanging, but I see a lot of little ones that disappear and leave an empty stem.

Thanks in advance
(I'm obsessed with these gourds.)
