Toto, we're not in KS, we're in Hawaii !!!!!

Pic #4, what is plant behind bird cage, looks like some type of curly philo?

My fave is pic #2 with the purple castor bean.

I'll try to post something today, but would never compare w/ your paradise.

PS: Do not remember the LA lady. May have been a little before my time.

I think your weather is a colder than mine in San Antonio, right? Do most of these plants stay out in the winter or do u over winter in a greenhouse or something? I've been trying to create the same type of area in one part of my yard but I dont want to really plant alot of them in the ground for fear of loosing them to cold weather. I think some might come back up like the Cannas and some Bananas but what about he different Elephant Ears and other tropical plants? I'd hate to loose so many plants. Do u cover any of them that stay out? Sorry for so many questions but I really do need some help.

Thanks Chrissy,I know the southern hemisphere is the coldest on record, since the early 1900's,snowed in Buenos Aires in early July.

Anaid,
Yes I overwinter most of these in a greenhouse, but some of the bulbs stay in the ground, like crinums, and running elephant ear, even a few alocasias stay in the ground, even some palms,Trachyscarpus, wagg, T.Fortunia, sago palm, sabal minor, butia .pindo palm.
All the cannas stay in the ground, bamboo is hardy,I cover with lots of leaves and straw,if you can keep the ground from freezing most plants will return, with a little protection.
Castor beans I plant by seed early april and will be 20ft by Fall.

LOL!
The fragrance of the plumerias when in bloom are just wonderful!!!!
The roses, are very hard to beat as well!!!!
The Easter type lillies and Imperial lillies make me happy.
But,my yard is fenced, and growing all around the house is a wonderful white and yellow flower honeysuckle,Mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm
that is very fragrant early in the morning and late at nite that just drives me crazy !!!
And it is in bloom from early May to October, and you can't ask for more than that!!!

I use to chat with a wonderful lady from Perth a year or so ago,and she and her husband
retired and moved to the very south of the Island and bought 25 acres of bush, seems like it was 250 miles from where they did live, any how they were going to plant a paradise of plants there, they had a beautiful home just east of Perth up on top of a hill, and you could look down on the Ocean and Perth,LOL,I thought she lived in paradise her house was surrounded by those huge birdnest ferns and, blue agapanthus, and tons of the orange
flowering Clivias,oh and the Eucalyptus trees!!!!

Well you asked for it! (I know I will forget some )
The fragrant roses...many smelling so different...I lean towards the older ones for true rose fragrance.

Frangipanni is Summer!
Angels tumpets...they are not called that for nothing!
Snail creeper...seductive...romantic...sigh (missing it ...it is Winter)
M.Laxa...Think Summer nights and dreaming
Bouvardia Longiflora...oooh so intense and just one can be sniffed all around
Gardenia of course!
Daphne...tingling exciting fresh scent
White ginger...straight from heaven ...I think it hitched a ride with the trumpets:)
Tuberose...distilled love potion!
Boronia...citrus honey tang..mmmmm
citrus blossoms...would grow it even if it did not fruit- for the fragrance!
Gum leaves...could not live without it!
Sweet peas...the old fashioned smelly ones...yumm
Wisteria...smells of sweet peas and orange flower water
Apple blossom...smells like romance!
Jasmine ...all the fragrant ones...love them all.
Honeysuckle...all...Summer and the wonderful Winter one.
All the fragrant herbs...Rosemary at the top
Night scented stock...mmmmmmm
Michelia figo...Spring delight!
Cherry Pie (heliotrope)

Now I know that I haven't covered it all but...whew! ha ha ha how about you?

Chrissy! Is that really you? How adorable! I grew up in San Francisco, and I can remember climbing trees, and playing with my brothers. I would pick lots of different weeds and flowers to "feed" them. I would cure their aches and pains (in play, of course) with my different potions...must have been a garden-witch even way back when I had no idea what one was! Then as a teen, I was truly a "flower child"..."When you come to San Francisco, be sure to wear some flowers in your hair"...ahh yes, sun, flowers, the 60's, music and dirty feet...

Wait long enough things will come back in style, the coffee houses like starbuck, except our coffee house was called the green onion, and there was cappicianio ,and smoke filled rooms, and some one reading a poem,on a stage,or playing a folk song!!!
It was man this,man that,cool dude,a visit with maryjane,sideburns and a goatee!!!LOL
It was this time in my life,my grandfather ask me to plant a old rose for him,he had over a 100 old garden roses, and oh the fragrance!!!I think I smelled every rose that day!!!!
But to be honest, when they sent my grandmother to a nursing home at the ripe age of 94,she gave me all her houseplants, and some where over 60 yrs old,it was that then and there I was hooked on tropicals.

Tropicman, I really love your garden! You have done fantastic!

We were with my Dad who was in the Marine Corps at Kaneohe Bay Oahu Hawaii in the 60's so I have an extreme fondness for the islands and would like to recreate that in my backyard. Those of you who live there are so fortunate!

I bought some seeds from Kenni Koala Aussie's store on ebay. They came thru pretty fast. He has quite a variety at fairly good prices. Some could be obtained here on the mainland. I kinda got carried away.

I love your thread here, your love for the tropicals and your sense of humor.

I have fibromyalgia so will only be able to greet yall occasionally.

One of my attempts at recreating the islands is my pineapple growing...finally after three years! I hope it doesn't float away with all of the rain we've had!

Northern, every body seems to be in a rush or hurry.
Southern, everyones laid back,no hurry,it will be there when we get there,if it ain't nothing lost.it will come around again!!!

Hi no insult- I just was not sure what you mean't...Yeh OK chuck a prawn on the Barby etc ...ozzy slang..."in the bush" means in the country (as in the the places Crocodile Dundee came from ) hence my confusion.
I love those Southern drawls too like Madge in the Golden Girls...can't understand why anyone would be interested in our accent...but I am glad you like it. I would be very pleased to talk about anything Australian (botanical) if any one has any questions...but on the whole I think you should know that our gardens are as diverse as the population...most of us have a bit of everything.
The Kangaroo paws are a hard call.Don't worry about smoke water...crumble up a bit of newspaper and light it- drop the seed into it and leave overnight...ready to go. Next is treat it like a cactus! perfect sandy drainage no fertilizer...perhaps a pinch of blood and bone thats all. I would not grow it myself because it is a bit too touchy re humidity etc . To me I prefer the rainforest trees like the Black bean ...and umberella trees (you may know them as houseplants)...more later .

Tropicman, How old are your pineapple plants? I've heard some do not flower without help, some as old as 4-6 years old. They say to enclose part of an apple in a bag over the plant to get it to flower in Feb or March. ww.plantea.com/pineapple-houseplant.htm tells how to do it. The plant has to be at least 2 yrs old.

I can't wait to see my Aussie plants growing in Texas either! I got the pink peacock flower, and malay rose ginger. Hope you get your Kangaroo paws to germinate!

I didn't realize that it flowered first either. Learned all of this while helping my 8 yr old granddaughter do a science project this past spring. Go to the website below. It shows the flower. Then it is pollenated, and then the pineapple starts to grow.

http://www.kriyayoga.com/photography/photo_gallery/d/77-4/1_...

As it grows more flowers come out of the sides, and then it becomes the fruit!
Very interesting...by the way my granddaughter took 1st place for her grade at her school science fair. We did it on "How to root a plant". We showed the pineapple (crown), airplane plant (runner), and Begonia (stem). She did a great job!

I dunno, but will pictures of blooming yucca's do? I went over with my camera and got a few shots of it. Rang the doorbell and talked to the home owner for awhile. The reason it has no leaves toward the bottom, is that he has children, and the leaves are sharp, so he pulls the lower leaves off!

I will post his then mine. I still think they may be different types. Interested to know what yall think. The other plant I have actually had the tag on it..it is a dragon tree, not a yucca. I think I have the yucca tags somewhere...where is the question.

Let me know...I'll try to find another link with a pineapple picture!

Mine is a Spanish Bayonet. I don't know if it will ever flower - I have been told that they don't when in containers. DH has it in his "prickly" garden ..."keeps the rifraf out".

While I was out taking pictures a lady gave me two starts to a firecracker plant that she had in front of her mailbox. She dug up a small peice roots and all! I thanked her alot!

It is beautiful! She says it grows fast. It is now in good potting soil. I hope it will be happy.

That is GORGEOUS! But it is different than the one I have...there are several different plants called firecracker. Mine is a crossandra infundilbiformis, whereas the one you sent is a coral plant or russelia equisetiformis. I think that is latin for "gorgeous plant". ha ha! Oh thankyou for the pineapple flowers...that is amazing...I guess I must not have been looking down the "funnel". The yukkas do flower in containers...but keep them on the dry side...almost like a cactus.Don't feed...or very little. When I was first starting out gardening I inherited a cement courtyard full of yukkas in cement pots.At the time I did not like these sharp things but just left them to their own devices. So the conditions were neglect- super heat ...on cement and in cement
then one day all at once they all shot up the flower spikes...which was interesting...and after a while I had this amazing show of those wonderful creamy white bells...I no longer thought they were ugly ...such a contrast the soft gentle
bells atop those "needles".I have not had them in the garden after moving from that beautiful Art Deco home (it seems yukkas were all the go in those days to contrast against the rounded walls) because of the fear of those needles with young ones around...but I am thinking of getting a couple of the new soft tipped ones that are now on the market... I do love those flowers and so do the bees as I recall...thanks so much for the memories...I had forgotten them. The firecracker plant...over here is called the lipstick plant...I think firecracker is a better name...great tough plant!

Chrissy, don't feel bad. Mine was right at the front door, and I missed it's flowering. It was already the start of the pineapple fruit when I noticed it.
I had been sick for most of the cold winter mos, and didn't go out much in Feb, March a little, so I totally missed it. I'll pay more attention to the others I have next year! It's really grown. Should be ripe in late Aug or Sept. The grandkids are really looking forward to it.

Islandshari...did you plant the crown off of that pineapple the other day?
I don't blame you, I wouldn't leave either. What's the price of property around there?

Chrissy what a great memory you have,my favorite show,Captain Adam on his sailboat Tiki
sailing from hong kong to hawaii stopping at all the small islands, and all the babes he met and helped get out of trouble,Gardner McKay! what a man!!!

My uncle gave up his rights as chief of Guam and joined the army to fight in Korea, well that the story I got,so I guess half the people there are my kinfolk!!!!LOL
Never been there but would love to visit,I have a nephew who lives there and works for the airlines as a flight attendance, met a couple years ago at a family reunion.

Don...just follow the links up above, and you will see more pics than you can dream of! Guam is not too far, about 3 hours by plane. It is part of our "in/out" flight pattern...going to the states we go through Hawaii on a plane that came from Guam...going to Australia we go through Guam. It is much more commercial than I like, but I met a Chammoro here that said the other end - away from the hotels is better, so I'm going to try that next time I'm there. You should definately visit it if you have ties like that!

We have several plumerias, but only three of them have bloomed. I have a fuscia one that is about to bloom...kind of similar to Tropicman's. I'd like to have a red one!!!!!!!

Chrissy,
I have had several plumies in the best years, but my favorite ones I had palnted in the ground,in 2004,then it happened,I had a heart attack,Halloween weekend ,the weather had been real warm for October,I was going to dig them up and give several cuttings away for they were over ft tall and 6ft wide, but now I was able to,after a 5 by-pass surgery,so I called the zoo,to come get all my plants,2 semi truckloads, and to put them in the jungle exhibit.
This included my large plants, bananas, palms brugmansias, several huge houseplants as well.I had a white one with a yellow eye, with a touch of pink in the edges that had a coconut fragrance, this red one has a fruity fragrance to me.
I have about 7 others that have yet to bloom, since I started most of them from seed.

Ok now,not sure if I'm actually correct on this, but put your thinking caps on,was 77 sunset strip,a spin off of Hawaiian Eye?????

Not sure about the video of the series, but would to see it again on reruns!!!
Texas gal,the double peach is one of my favorite hibiscuses.

Hawaiian eye was a spin off of 77 Sunset Strip. 77 was first (according to google). It's been so long ago I had to look it up!

The peach is one of my favorites also. I have some other's but the freezes really bit them back. They've come out of it but haven't bloomed yet. Two died, but I don't know which two as I didn't have them marked. I didn't take them in but will next year!

Almost fell off my chair when I dug up these lyrics ...

From 77 Sunset Strip.

Remembering the intro with Ed Byrnes combing his hair , a ducktail if I remember correctly. I think they tried to make that hairstyle against the rules when I was in Jr High in Miami Springs , FL.

KOOKIE, KOOKIE (LEND ME YOUR COMB)
Edward Byrnes & Connie Stevens

CONNIE: Kookie, Kookie, lend me your comb. Kookie, Kookie?
EDWARD: Well now, let's take it from the top & grab some wheels
& on the way we'll talk about some cuckoo deals.
C: But Kookie, Kookie, lend me your comb. Kookie, Kookie?

E: Now you're on the way, miss, & I'm readin' you just fine.
Don't cut out of here till we get on Cloud 9.
C: But Kookie?

E: I've got smog in my noggin ever since you made the scene
C: You're the utmost!
E: If you ever tool me out...dead, I'm the saddest, like a brain
C: The very utmost. Kookie, lend me your comb. Kookie, Kookie?

E: Man, I got my bruise lighters in my flapsy-colored pen
You're gonna send me to that planet called...you know it, baby, the end!

(sax solo)

C: Kookie, Kookie, lend me your comb. Kookie, Kookie?
E: If you ever cut out, you might be a stray cat
'Cause when I'm flyin' solo, nowhere's we're on that!
C: Kookie, Kookie, lend me your comb. Kookie, Kookie?

E: What's with this comb caper, baby? Why do you wanna latch up with my comb?
C: I just want you to stop combing your hair...& kiss me. You're the maximum utmost.
E: Well, I beans & I dreams goin', I'm movin' right now
'Cause that's the kind of scene that I dig...baby, you're the ginchiest!

roflol ... ginchiest ??

Don (Howard:) )...now I know why I saw you in that scene from carousel...walking along the beach sing "walk on ...through the wind ...walk on through the rain"...It seems that you really had to walk on through some very hard times...a heart can be hurt in more ways than just physical...it must have come nigh on to broken- having all of those wonderful and much loved trees and plants taken away as well as almost losing your life. I hope you are loving every minute of your life now and we can see you have a paradise once again ...you are some kind of someone.

Now who mentioned a movie called Cry Baby...no I haven't seen it ...I am scared to ask about it though...yikes!

Yes I miss the Hibiscus too...some lovely ones there!
Now scooterbug...why am I hearing -Yo Rinny!...and the theme from Rin Tin Tin ?

Group hug to you too! I know...everytime one of my seeds comes up I just talk to it and brag over my new baby! It is fun to get new plants! My back yard can attest to all of the fun that I am having! LOL. I do have room for a few more plants, but I've barely started on the sides and the front...so we have lot's of room to go! I'm going to plant some of those seeds I have.

Good luck with the diabetes! Hope you can get it under control. Will keep you in my prayers.

Keep on gardening!!!!!!!!

Don that Mexican BoP is gorgeous! I don't like BoP's but that is to die for! Funny - I seem to always love the flowers from Mexico. I had the front of my house in Colorado covered with Mexican Primrose from March to September. People would stop and ask what it was and could they have some. After 10 years of that, my neighborhood started to have a distinctly pink caste to it during the summer. Where, how, what...details, I need details...I just gotta get me one of those!

Shari now you have trod on my toes... Sabu was my first crush as a kid!(mine))))
About the elephants...once I took a wheel barrow up to where the circus has been to scab the elephant dung (the size of footballs)...under cover of darkness
sneaking back home...hubby was out -I piled it into the boot of an old chevy in the driveway...Hubby sold and wrecked American cars.I figured I would go out very early the next morning and quietly hide these footballs in the compost...I was so excited at the thought of having Elephant poo in my garden...that I could barely sleep as I hugged this terrific secret all to myself...early in the morning I awoke to chains rattling and a noise I was familiar with. A Tow Truck.I quickly dressed and ran outside and it was gone!!!...the old chevy with a load of those wonderful "footballs "...evidently Hubby had sold it and it had been waiting to be towed away to the new owner...never told hubby ...don't know what they thought at the other end when they opened that boot...but to this day I still feel ripped off...and think of it as the great Elephant fertilizer heist! #^*#**.I think an elephant ...besides being a great pet- would keep me in all the" you know what "that I could ever use...So yes I would love an elephant...would have liked Sabu too...now Corky went on to become one of the Monkeys didn't he?
and Howard (Don) didn't Mareen go on to have a little girl called Mia with a fella called Farrow? or do I have her mixed up with another ...Tarzan was something no one missed ...but I wanted to be Sheena ...queen of the Jungle...figured I might run into Sabu I guess.I love that tree but can't grow your Mexican "Bird of paradise" ha ha ha...Howard (Don ) you take care of the diabetes...my husbands family is riddled with it ...want or need recipes or advice...just sing out won't you...uh oooooo -in the jungle the mighty jungle the lion sleeps tonight...
sorry Shari but I guess...I am a lost cause * giggling*

I would have been dying to know what happened to it...on the other hand...maybe best left alone! Are you sure he doesn't ever read these posts? LOL! Chrissy you made my day! They say that laughter is the best medicine!!!!!!!!! Well I really had my dose today! HAHAHAHA

Tropicman I have heard of secret gardens...I think you have a secret home...
great privacy ...such lovely privacy...did you always love the tropical theme or did it just evolve? Did you work to a plan or was it (like most of us) ooooh just gotta have it?...if you could save only one treasure what would it be?...hmmm so ok that is a cruel question ...I take it back.If you could save only 5 what would you save.I am being very quiet and will try not to wander off away from your lovely
suburban nest ...I love to think of you sitting in your secret magical home...looking out of the windows and being able to go to any tropical place in the World that you care to imagine... (firmly keeping the mouth shut)

It has taken me a couple of hours to get over that amazing site scooterbug my husband has sold a lot of those cars (those models) and even though I am an Ozzy I drive "yank tanks"...my first a big black batmobile dodge all chromed fins
and push button gears...I also had a "nipple pink" * blushing* 59 caddy that had a massive engine ...a convertable...all fins and pointy bits...hubby sold it to a "big Pop group" and regrets it now because they are worth a small fortune
...the songs on that site really ...messed with my head ...it was like the ongoing soundtrack that plays in my silly head...what a spin out...my sister lost her hubby about 4 years back -he was a big wheel in the hot rod club scene out here...he would have been looking on down with a big smile. He
had over 300 of those hottys turn up on the day of his funeral...(don't smoke folks)

Those mexican birds of paradise...what are they? our birds of paradise are the strelitzias...I went to the site...with no luck (or my head is still not working)...but couldn't see a name (botanical)

Shari home page? ...do you mean your personal site or somewhere here on DG
that I haven't found yet...still exploring.:)
Got visiters coming... back later...See I can be quiet! not a peep...not even one song from American Graffiti...:)

Oh Chrissy!!!!!
Yes I've always love the tropical theme.
I
As I weld every day at work,I picture my gardens, and what I'd like to plant every year, and how I would change the design,in which I do every year to some degree or another.
Nothing says Bora Bora,more than a banana,a palm,a hibiscus,fragapanni,and the tahiti
gardenia!!!! I have to add one more the giant Taro!!!
I can picture myself day dreaming of being with Charles Laughton, and Clark Gable,The famous Captain Bligh and Fletcher Christian, collecting the breadfruit trees, and potting them up to take back to Merry Ole England!!!!

Yellow bird of paradise also known as The Pride of Barbados!!!
Caesalpinia Pulcherrima.
Grown usually in the west indies.

Scooter my first car was the 49 chevy coupe, push button ignition, sky blue was the color, girls love that car, then I moved up to a muscle car,58 olds, big powerful engine, gas hog too!,Then I moved up to one of the cars in the web page right down to the red color, the 63 impala chevy convertible, now that baby pick up the ladies!!!!!
What I'd give to have those cars back!!!

We still sell those cars ...the last one sold went to a company doing an ad for optus (big computer broadband supplier joint)...most of these cars go to people doing videos for pop songs...move makers...advertising...etc

I am still getting over people laughing about my stolen elephant poo story... here I was telling a sad tale ...of my treasure being swiped from under my very nose and everyone laughs...

Oh tropicman ...love those old black and white flicks and I remember as a child being terrified of that awful Captain Bligh...
I am afraid that all though I adore the tropics...I get very seasick- my father is a prize winning Fisherman ...but I just can't do boats (even threw up on the Sydney Ferry as a child)...he fishes in Botany Bay and has a secret place (over an old shipwreck) ssshhhh...I grew up 10 mins walk from Brighten Beach...(Botany Bay)...spent every weekend swimming...a lot of time playng under the Norfolk Island Pines that line the sand overlooking the Beach ...When the sharks came too close we would have to leave the water. We used to slide down the old mounted cannons there...so even though I did not grow up on an island I was a child of the sea. All of those characters in your imaginings were part of my childhood too... my dad used to imagine himself to be Loyd Bridges...in Seahunt...who knew that he would one day have all of his sons go on to be so successful in the movie business.Well then where would we be without all of those ships that bought back all of those wonderful things from places far and near...not only foods but the flowers too!...I remember reading somewhere that tulips were so highly thought of -that a rare one could cost cost the price of a grand castle...but they evidently went out of fashion after a big frenzy. They must of been amazing times...all of those new things flooding in (what do breadfruit taste like?...is it because they taste like bread or just because they look like one)...and all the funny ideas that people had about the various new objects.

Your choice of your 5(6) plants are the tropics as you say...we can't get the tahitian gardenia in NSW but I grow the Gingers instead...and lots of the Professor Pucchi gardenias (huge flowers...huge fragrance to match)

No one else has chosen their five to save...come on folks...you can only save 5 of your plants which ones?...mine my Charles Austen Roses (sorry not very tropical but love them too much) what do you mean I can only have one...oh well ok... Celebration...happy golden colour... heavenly fragrance strong healthy rose.
My peach Angel's Trumpet...White ginger...my mandavilla Laxa (perfumed)...my kentia palm ...whew that was hard!
Borra Borra ...(hmmmm theme from Wipeout...only thinking... not singing :)

5: My double peach hibiscus, Pikake, Bird's Nest Fern, Alamanda Cathartica, and my orchids. These are just my fave 5 today. In another month, if all goes well, I may have blooms on my Aphelandra Sincariana and my Pacystachus...in which case all bets are off.

Hey Jim,
With the palms and foliage plants,I keep the temps 55* at nite,75* during the daytime hours.
About the same with flowering hibisus and passion vines, maybe a little warmer during the daytime, they love the heat.
Crinums and other bulbs, bananas ,roots as gingers 45* to 70*
Always keep fans 24/7,and keep the floors wet most of the time to keep the humidity high,
I use the rubber roof liner, that they also use in ponds on my floors, the black attracts the heat
keeps the greenhouse warmer.I try to mist the plants as often as possible, every day
if I can.
I really just want to keep the plants alive and healthy and not so much the growing aspect.

Aha...here yall are...found you! Tropicman, have they been behaving over here?

Oh elephant poo! HAHAHAHA! Elephants live in Florida at the Ringling home.. So if you get someone from there, you can get some elephant poo! Or at the ZOO...see that rhymes!

My favorite five tropicals are #1 Plumeria for sure, #2 my Darla Anita daylily,
sego palm, hibiscus, and banana trees. I have others, but those are my favorites.

Wipeout was a favorite tune of mine! My very first teen years were on Oahu, so surfer music was my favorite, beachboys, Jan and Dean, The Righteous Brothers. My first date was to Waikiki Beach. We had to double date, and we remained friends for quite awhile. Oh the memories!!!!!!!!!!! That is why the fondness for tropicals still to this very day.

G'Day Shari! just after 6am here...weds., 8th August...8c temp.
It's a bit cool but the day will be beautiful...Hi and Aloha all...just love your description of what a gardenia means to you TM...in a way it seems a shame that we have lost some of the elegance of yesteryear...but I must be frank...I don't miss the whale bone corsets...the suspender belts and stockings...having to starch all my petticoats ...to wear on Saturday night to the dance. I Think the ladies will agree that although extremely strange looking- things called pantyhose were a revolution and whew comfortable...guess it was a downhill slide from there...Don't we all still envy the elegance of the past...but then I enjoy the freedom and comfort of the present ...still we have our
meeeemories misty watercoloured memories... of the way we were...*grin*

Wow, y'all are all jolly festive on this thread...lol!

Tropicman, just wanted to say that I'm quite envious of your zone 6 garden, you've done a marvelous job. I am going to try stealing some of your ideas...I had blown off plumeria completely, as I figured it would be too hard to grow, for example.

I have a semi-tropical garden here in 7b, but it's basically new. Trying to focus on the hardiest stuff first and going from there...I'd post a picture but it won't be too impressive...lol

Hey Chrissie...yes, I'm sure most of us would agree that it is great not to have to wear all of those petticoats. Here the younger generation doesn't even wear the pantyhose. They wear open toe shoes and go bear legged with skirts, shell tops, jackets for business!!!!!!!!! Or sundresses with little jackets and sandals. And yes I caught ...the way we were...It is much better today!!!!!!!!!!

Sorry Tropicman for the girltalk! Gardenias are still some of my favorites, Southern Magnolias, also! Have two small trees in my front yard. They smell soooo good!

Tropicanna, sure you can grow plumies there, you just have to take them into the garage when it gets below 40 deg. but they will make it. Even here in 9a we still have to protect them from the cold. Per Southeast Texas Gardening they say 40 deg. I had read 50 somewhere.

We used to lived in NC...family in the Marine Corps before moving to Texas.

Happy day everyone! It's not quite 9:00 am here...getting the day going...Sunny for the last couple of hours, but the rain is looming. I really need a dry day to get some sand under my patio slats. Arrgh. Plumeria really shouldn't be a problem Tropicanna - and they would give you a tie back to here! That would be cool. I used to have a Magnolia tree outside of my apartment back in the dark ages when I lived in San Diego. I just loved the fragrance that would come through the window of an evening...better than any candles, or incense that's for sure...and I like both! Never could grow it anywhere else I've lived though...much the pity.

I have the Southern Magnolia in the smaller form it is called Little Gem and it has that sames delicious lemony fragrance...and the lovely flower as it's larger cousin...shiny laquered leaves with lovely chocolate velvet underlay...love it and you have two? *green*...I have Spanish moss draped under the boges and roses ...all dripping down almost to the ground...they love the constant drip drip drip after watering or rain ...I find them very Southern indeed ...and get excited when I see them hanging down from every branch of all the trees in the Movies...while the others are watching some kind of maneater (crocs/gaters piranahs etc devouring the cast ...I am looking at the grey whisps gently blowing in the breeze...
Tropicanna ...shelter is the key ...lots and lots of plants grown close together...they greenhouse themselves that way. Put the Tropical "looking" ones on the outskirts and in order of tenderness on the inner plantings and understories. You know all this already right...sorry! ...TM knows his craft and I am sure he will guide you well.:)

77 I know that TM would not mind hearing about what it took his charming companions to look so fine for all the guys...getting ready would take all day!

actually, chrissy, I didn't know all that about plants greenhousing each other, but I am erratic about what I'll run a hardiness trial on and what I won't. I'm pretty new to all this, so trying to be my normal adventurous self while also maintaing touch with reality in there somewhere.

But chrissy, where are all the guys TM's plants are waiting for? I'm missing them this way..lol

Some one mention Connie Francis!!Wow she was a hot looker!!!!
Sad though, how her life turned out to be,she went thru a lot of bad luck!
But on the other hand,I'm watching Jane Russell tonite with Robert Mitchum,in Macao.

Ok here's my take on the years of time gone by.
Todays ladies no longer leave the thought of imagination !!!!
people don't day dream like they use too!Thats what made the old movies so enjoyable!!!
Where are the Rita Haywoods,Lana Turner And Ingrid Bergman!!!
Today there is Paris Hilton.Nicole Ritiche and Britney Spears,Madonna, don't do a thing for me or any red blooded male that I know of!!!!
Where are the movie stars of today!!!!!

Tropicanna, thanks for the kind words, you to can grow anything you set you mind to grow,I didn't grow everything on the first try, took time and time again before I learned the likes and dislikes of a certain plant!!!

Vs 71099,you and your daughter are always welcome to come get lost in the gardens of Babylon!!!
The parrots always love playing with the kids, there just big kids themselves!!!!

Shari, like you the fragrances can over whelm the heart and sole, the lure of a womens
perfume,can drive a man wild!!!!!
Lets say your in a crowd of people, you might not notice the beauty of a women, first hand right away, but the fragrance of her perfume, will make you take notice and go looking quickly!!!!

Every morning this week ,before I leave for work,I tour the gardens in the dark, with only the garden lights to see,and I've been smelling a fragrance that I normally don't smell, well tonite as the wind was blowing quite hard I got the glimpse high up,and it a bloom from my white wisteria, that april freeze, froze all my flower buds, before they had a chance to open!!!
Just one long spray of flowers, just about to dry up,would have never thought of the wisteria blooming in 100* heat,in the middle of the summer, when they normally bloom in the coolness of April!!!

Don you are a bit of a poet, my friend. And Wisteria! Now that is one lovely, old-fashioned beauty. And I always loved the fragrance...not many people grow it anymore, but I have heard that it is on the way to being "in" again. I certainly hope so. Even just the name makes me think of simpler times.

And I agree with you completely about the starlets...but my question is why are the ones you mentioned even names we recognize? What have they done besides get themselves into one scandal after another. At least Madonna has talent. But PH, NR and BS are pretty much just that...BS!

Texasgal,your something else,remind me of a time when I was young!!!LOL
Parrots I have 5 some can talk, and they all make lots of noise!!!
Spike a sulfur crested cockatoo.is right behind me in his huge cage, talks to me all the time,
He like to flirt with the women,I took him outside the other day and the new neighbor lady came over and said I knew by the cage you had a bird, and I just could hardly wait to meet him, first thing spike says was hi baby!!!!LOL
He had her heart right then and there!!!!

Shari I agree with you on the stars that are in one scandal after another,or rehab time.!!!
Thats all they have for our children and grandchildren to look up too, same with some of the sports players,I'm ashamed to see them take the steroids just to make them get the fame and big bucks!!!

HeyTM( Howard)...Wisteria does spot bloom ...my beautiful purple on does that...what does yours smell like mine smells of sweet peas and orange flower water...about the perfumes right on! love my smelly ...just out of interest which fragrances rang your bell? We gals would love to know what men appreciate...my hubby had a broken nose years ago and can't smell anything any more...but prior to that he always told me how nice I smelt...I sure do miss that but then I have always worn it for myself...not for anyone else although it is nice if others like it.I honestly thought that most men take no notice ...that is very cool...so go on try to remember what perfumes rocked your world...by the way your cheeky cocky came from Ozz it explains a lot about his character ha ha ha
About modern stars...well the real star thing does not exist any more...it went the way of the corsets and stockings...but they had their scandels too but the studio bosses would buy silence.Being famous takes it's toll on many.
is it taking it's toll on you yet Don?...:)
As fall is approaching soon what will you be looking forward to in your tropical paradise...what lovely flowers will be there for you to enjoy?

Shari do you have a fall (Autumn) or does it stay the same all year...anyone else looking forward to cooler times in the garden...even though we are being tropical
that would be interesting... some mentioned the lack of men on this thread...since it may be my fault I will refrain from singing in case...it is me scaring people away...hummming...walk like a man ...walk like a man...:)

to be...many just beginning their careers...we were all so innocent then all having an orange juice and chatting in the breaks ...I knew the Bee Gees when they had short back and sides hairdoes...I think you folk know Billy Thorpe...
the Easy Beats and many others that you wouldn't know...always have loved to dance and sing...and now there's people swayin and music playin theres dancing in the streets...they're dancin in...Chicargo...down in New Orleans...Oklahoma City ...all we need is the music sweet music ...

I'm Baaaack!!!
Typhon Charlie, came thru lastnite with winds around 75 miles an hour, what bananas leaves didn't get shredded to pieces got uprooted from the ground,Like a nut I was out there trying to keep the bananas upright thru the wind and rain, staking and tying them up.then the electricity went out,had to find the hurricane lamps, them fill them up with lamp oil, then find some candles too.
I just now got back on the internet, been down for about 24 hours.
I'll see if I can find some pics, may have to take more of the birds, they were on old computer that crashed and lost everything.
Chrissy the white wisteria,to me has the smell of the draceana in flower, very very sweet, almost burns your nose when up close ,better at a distance..
My snail vine is just starting to flower, that smell,is one of my favorite fragrances,ok my mother always wore channel no.5 perfume,so I've been trained to that fragrance first of all,but I'm lured to the gardenia fragrance,it drives me wild, one of those smells you just can't get enough of!!!!.
Then comes the citrus flower, the orange fragrances is very luring, and gets me in the romantic mood!!!!
As far as being a celebrity,,just finished giving a tour of the garden ,some people all the way from Durango,Mexico, they just loved the tropical plants, and they grow a lot of them down there. My Spanish not quite as good as it once was,so communicating was a little difficult.

Tropicanna, your plants are doing just great for there first year, quite the collection of plants too!!!

Thanks Texasgal, for worrying, yes it gets mighty warm, wearing those leathers, and am soak and wet,10 minutes after I start work, and lucky me I work right next to the water fountain.

Don, gee whiz, here I was worried about the heat getting you, and you're about to be done in by gale force winds! I thought I was the only one that crazy about banana trees! I know it's disheartening when their beautiful leaves get damaged, but they'll grow back...you won't. Do take care of yourself! You can't hardly kill a banana tree.

Who would take care of Yummy and Tango? They are adorable! How old are they? How did you acquire them? Thank you for the pictures!

Visitors from Mexico? Very impressive! I'm sure they loved your gardens!

Back in my Mom's younger days she used to wear Chanel No. 5 also. Now she has a chemical sensitivity and can't be around any strong chemicals, including perfumes. My favorite is Pleasures by Estee Lauder, but I can't wear it near her. Even the smell of new clothes can upset her eye and make it burn really bad, so I hardly ever get to wear it. I like to get a good sniff now and then. I feel that way about the magnolias. They smell sooooooooo good! Good to have you back! Take care of yourself!

I recognized the plumeria, snail plant, and passiflora, but what are some of the others? Do you have any idea how many actual plants you have?

It is so lush! Love it! I have a start, but it doesn't look anything like yours!
Yours is just Fantastic!

I'm sure it is very peacefull to focus on the garden when you are at work. It is spetaculiar! You should be very proud of it! A job well done!

I hope mine looks like that one of these days!

Me too! I have a problem getting that lush look, since everything is in pots...but I know it can be done! And now I am striving to grow as beautifully as the Wichita tropics.

Tropicman,

Wow, you garden like that in a zone 6! My husband thinks I am out of control in zone 8.
You have inspired me to only get more tropical!
Beautiful gardens, what makes you think tropical in Kansas? Just wonder what inspires some peoples garden styles.

Gk

Tgal,banana ,has about 10ft long leaves,Alocasias,4ft x 4ft,same with the Castor bean
and rice paper plant,huge leaves.
The yellow 4 o clocks are very fragrant, purple in the bouganvilla, makes my eyes go blurry if I look at it too long!!!!
Those honey hostas are very fragrant almost have the gardenia fragrance.
About every 10ft you walk in my rainforest you get another complete fragrance, falling all over you,it's almost feels like the perfume counter at Xmas time at JC Penny's!!!LOL

Chrissy, hey that has a nice sound do it,Tropicman to the tune of rocket man,I like it!!!

You know what they saySIL will love heaven, from What I've heard tell about it!!!

Vossner lots of compost and water and not much wind, and morning sunshine!!!

GK,
I'm dong my little share to save the rainforest, only if it lives in my mind only.
And if that ain't enough, stopping point for the the monarchs on there journey back to Mexico to rest for the winter!!!
Lasst but not least, pollen for all the honey bees, and hoping to bring back there numbers, for we need them to survive!!!
Your landscaping is wonderful, looks like Fiji!!!!

Tropicman - this is amazing! Great pix!

Hoping to create something like your garden on the Outer Banks of North Carolina. For those plants you do bring inside to overwinter, do you provide artificial light?

This will be a Zone 9a garden (I think). Do you use any dwarf date palms? East too grow - difficult? I've started with some windmill palms and they're doing pretty well.
What kind of jasmine do you prefer (and do you know a good source?)

Hi Lalusc,

I too have trachycarpus fortunei palm and trachycarpus waggie palms in the ground, that are hardy to zone 6,also have a pindo palm in the ground to overwinter .
I have Canary date palms and regular date palms,I started from seed, put I don't think they would make it thru the winter here,so I have a greenhouse and sunroom,I overwinter these in.
I grow Carolina Jasmine here, and bring inside for winter, but I like the indian jasmine, with the nice size leaves,I also find the wedding jasmine stephonotis a very good jasmine and very fragrant,I believe Plants delight is a good source for getting plants in your area.

When you're a millionaire...lol. PDN is great because they research stuff we can grow, I use them as a resource and try to find the plants elsewhere (not trashing them but they are a bit pricey). They're having an open house next weekend-that way you could pick out the bigger plants (the prices in their catalog is for 4 inch pots! yikes). Their gardens are beautiful.
