Welcome to the first of what we hope will be many installments of the Dave's Garden Electronic Floral Show! Many flower shows, whether held at national or regional conventions, county or state fairs, or other locales have a division for "artistic arrangement" where people create flower arrangements based on a specified theme. That's what we hope will happen here and, in the process, allow DG members a chance to showcase our floral arrangements, learn more about the art and craft of floral design, and have fun! This idea is a work in progress, based on some brainstorming in a previous thread: [HYPERLINK@davesgarden.com] We are not official representatives of "Dave's Garden," but just regular members and subscribers who want to try something new on this forum. Please join us.
The inaugural theme for the DG Electronic Floral Show is "Getting to Know You." Obviously, this theme is intended to encourage you to create an arrangement that helps us get to know you by featuring something (a favorite cut flower, a particular kind of vase or container, a color combination, interesting accessories) that conveys something about you. There aren't really many rules, but a few guidelines to consider:
1. Submit a good, clear photograph of your arrangement (i.e. download an image) on this thread that fits the designated theme ("Getting to Know You" in this case).
2. Provide any explanation you like to accompany the photo, perhaps about why you chose these flowers and materials, why you believe this fits the theme, how you designed the arrangement, problems you encountered when arranging and how you solved them, and so forth. Please also include a list of the plant materials used in the arrangement (DG members will want to know the name of that beautiful flower!) when possible.
3. You may use any combination of flowers, foliage, or other plant materials (fruits, vegetables if you wish) along with any sort of container and accessories you wish. You are not restricted only to flowers grown yourself: feel free to buy cut flowers at a shop or farmer's market, borrow some (with permission!) from the neighbor, combine some of your own with somebody else's. You ARE expected to do the arranging yourself rather than purchase a professional arrangement.
4. Feel free to provide comments and constructive feedback (lots of "oohs" and "ahhs" are always welcome!) about the other arrangements you see here. If you have a suggestion for how to improve an arrangement or a method that you have found helpful for working with similar materials, please offer it but be considerate of the creative effort that probably went into the arrangement. Likewise, those who post an arrangement should be willing to hear comments from our DG gardening friends. This is meant to be a fun and positive learning experience for all.
Let's have a good time and get started, okay? Whether you are an experienced flower arranger or this is your first ever attempt at arranging flowers please jump on this thread and contribute you photos and ideas. We look forward to "getting to know" each other via our creative efforts at floral arrangement.

'getting to know'
I love to grow flowers in my garden and make arrangements with them.
I have used,(from the garden) jasmine, yellow roses, aquilega, daisy, sweet scabious, wallflower, forget me nots, lilac rose(blue moon) weigela, california lilac, red valarian and conifer. I only used small amounts from each plant. Adding to my
garden flowers I bought a bunch of green chysanths and some bear grass. Click the image for an enlarged view.

Terri, you will never cease to amaze me! I love them both.
I think this arrangement fits the name karma place. I love asian influence design...so here's mine. They consist of bamboo, canna and nephthytis leaves, grass, "done with blooming" agapanthus, coneflowers, and unnamed pink flowers. All of these were gathered from my sister's, my neighbor's and my gardens. I also bought flowers from the flower shop, but they're hydrating right now. I hope you like them, and please be gentle...

Karmaplace, your arrangement is absolutely lovely, it is so elegant and peaceful. I am very impressed with the leaf manipulation techniques and the bamboo is a nice touch. I think the pink flowers might be hollyhocks or hibiscus.
well done and keep up the good work, I like your style!
Seandor, Please don't have that attitude!!!! shall I show you my first arrangement? I hated it, but I learnt from my
mistakes and realised that there is no point being precious about it, just have another go!
C'mon on, give it a try, tell me something about you with flowers!

These are all so beautiful and it is really interesting to see some "personality" shining through each arrangement.
Seandor, please do post one. I plan to do one as well but my spouse/photographer is out of town for a few days so I have no way to download a new image at present (and no photos of any old arrangements since I am a newcomer to the world of floral arranging as well). I'm sure we will love your arrangement, you always have good ideas!!
Karma, I agree with what terriculture said in describing your arrangement. Both the terms "elegant" and "peaceful" came to my mind as well when viewing it.
Terri, with the "ice cream cone" arrangement (awesome creativity, by the way!) how did you get the effect of the flowers spilling over the side of the cone? Did they just naturally do that (with proper placement) or do you have something going on inside the vase that helps create that effect?
Keep `em coming folks, this is a blast!

Thankyou BD I thought you had gone on holiday or something!!
I made a little posy with the flowers.holding the stems and using string to tie them together after every 3 or 4 . I then wrapped the stems in pink ribbon and placed into the vase, no fancy mechanics or hidden tricks! If you keep the bunch
quite loose then it is easier to get that hanging over the edge look!!

Wow, that sure is a great display of fireworks, Terri. Seandor and Lenjo, I can't wait to see your arrangements. In the meantime, I'll share my second piece, citrus splash.
I bought gerber daisies, asiatic lilies, and sunflowers. My original idea was to make a posey of said flowers and stick it in a square glass vase with slices of grapefruit inside. Well, few things went wrong. Vase was way too big to hold the bouquet and I didn't want to stuff with greenery to tighten it. Grapefruit slices were way too big to arrange nicely in the vase. Asiatic lilies broke so easily within my hold...never again. So I ended up covering the vase with canna leaves, and placed foam inside to put flowers in place. And the final product was this...way off from what I envisioned.

Karma, those Gerbera Daisies and Sunflowers are such a vivid combination: that was a great choice of flowers. The height provides an interesting contrast with the bright blooms at the bottom. Thanks also for telling us something about your process and what did (and didn't) work. That is helpful and takes a little pressure off of some of us who are thinking about doing this for the first time. The best laid plans sometimes go awry, and yet you created something beautiful with your materials!
Terri, we've now got ice cream, gardening, and fireworks. A good window into some of your interests. That fireworks arrangement is very eye-catching and looks like it took a significant amount of prep work (with the sprayed flowers, etc). Can you remind us beginners what a "sisel collar" is? |

Karmaplace, That's beautiful, love the bright blocks of colour, very exotic , and good idea using the leaves to cover
the vase, I'm going to try that sometime, thanks for the idea! I like that tall greenary is it bamboo? Sometimes I think
it's better not to have a fixed outcome in mind! a vaque idea and a sort of 'go with the flo' approach can be less
frustrating. It's a lovely 'citrus splash' can't wait for your next one!

Thanks for the compliments. I really had fun doing it...I can't remember when was the last time I did it. I find it more challenging and fun to hunt for the materials around the house than to buy them, not to mention, it's cheaper! Terri, that's bamboo with all the leaves cut off. I also used iris leaves and ioxa. Yardqueen, the yellow flowers are thryallis.
Terri, thanks for the step by step instructions. I like the way you spiral the stems. A friend taught me to do it, but I can't arrange and keep up with the stems at the same time! I'm criss crossing it for now. Did you make the collar? I would love to make one in burlap and use it to wrap sunflowers. I think the two pieces will be it for me for the week. There's hardly anymore color in my garden. The only thing growing in my cut flower garden are zinnias, and I don't have enough of them. I've been snipping from the landscape and container plants which I also don't have enough of. Anyway, I do have my teacup arrangement ready for the teacup theme when it opens up! Well, off to my real job...have a great day! |

Well here as my simple contribution to "Getting to Know You". I like having the themes; the creativity that is shown is wonderful.
First all the flowers in my arrangement is from my garden. My dd said it just had me written all over it.
There are 3 light yellow snapdragons, 5 Green Envy zinnias, 3 red zinnias, 3 helenium, 7 crocosmia ':Lucifer' , I dahlia Berry Bounty, 3 variegated boxwoods, and 5 ninebark(dark foliage).
I love red, tea parties, dahlias(in fact the one in the photo is one that we grew from seed and therefore named it), the ninebark and boxwoods are started from cuttings I took, so I love to propagate plants. The teapot is shaped like a tomato which I thoroughly enjoy from the garden this time of year.
And so TA DA...LOL Click the image for an enlarged view.

every Monday during gardening season, I take 3 vases of flowers into work. one for my desk, one for my supervisor's and one for her Mom. (Mom is a shut in, many medical issues)
Supervisor has been on vacation so far this week, but will be back in to work tomorrow.
My vase is already on my desk at work, (lol, coral dawn roses, baby's breath, lavender)
but these two vases are going in for tomorrow morning.
My approach to flower design is plain and simple, what's blooming?, of that what do I like together?, and will it fit in the vase?.
these vases contain cosmos 'double click', zinnia pulima (saved seeds from last year) perennial baby's breath, and lavender.
the vases are yard sale finds

You all are creative wizards! I'm still trying to get over the Fireworks and how I actually thought I felt heat viewing it LOL!
Lenjo, I love your red teapot and all contents, (especially that little zinger Berry Bounty!)
Drivenbonkers, you are my hero/ine for putting together a simple arrangement of "what's in bloom," and more importantly, sharing it with your fellow workmates. I've done that for years and people are always stunned and amazed to receive a vase. They think I live on acres of blooms to have produced such a collection, no matter how few flower types are there.
I will share my favorite vase- only because it's my alltime favorite in my alltime favorite colors containing my alltime favorite flowers: the dahlias. Also there are coreopsis, liatris, snapdragons, rudbeckia, 2 butterfly bush types, daylily, yarrow and whatever else was blooming. Seen at this link
[HYPERLINK@img.photobucket.com]
Below is my very simple Father's Day bouquet made of what was blooming: peonies ( my new love for early blooms!), Lady's Mantle ( love that chartreuse,) foxglove, delphinium and hosta leaves surrounding.
That's probably it for bouquets from me because I'm going to be busy hovering around the Berry Bounty plant Lenjo sent me so I can garner one of those beautiful rich red flowers she showed us!

So good to have you on this thread in this forum, Annie, your bouquets are very lovely indeed. I see so many many familiar blooms. Our gardens I do believe must be very similar. Isn't alchemilla or lady's mantle one of the best little fillers going? My plants are totally robbed all the time of any bloom. I guess that is one way to keep them from spreading seed everywhere. Lady's Mantle and anything burgundy is just stunning, my dd was here today and she put some lady's mantle with green envy zinnias, burgundy carnations, Joe Pye weed not fully open and Foxy Lady and it was just gorgeous.
I would like to second the sentiments about drivenbonkers generosity. Isn't that what flowers are for but to bring some joy and beauty to those around us especially to the sick and shut in. My hats off to you drivenbonkers and all of you who share your blooms and creations.

Drivenbonkers, I concur with what others have said: first, how lovely your flower arrangement is with those beautiful fresh flowers (and that wonderful backdrop in your photograph. We will count that as part of the arrangement too, okay!!) and, second, how absolutely wonderful it is that you faithfully share those bouquets and arrangements with your mother and co-workers. That is such a thoughtful, meaningful thing to do. I've got a follow-up question to ask you about Baby's Breath but maybe I'll start another thread for that to avoid adding to the "dial up" dilemma.
Pooch, your flowers are awesome! What can I say? I've been admiring them over on the Dahlia forum all this time and when you showed up with an arrangement on this forum it was like getting a beautiful arrangement delivered to the front door!! We seem to have slowed down a bit today...especially after terri has decided we know enough about her (him?) already. I've changed my mind and here is another arrangement I made from MY garden. I'll call it my thankful bouquet, because many of these flowers were inspired by gardeners from this forum. I just want to thank all of you for giving me ideas for my small cutting flower collection. They consist of golden dewdrops (DoSaye), angelonia (dale a gardener), and zinnias (bdale, lenjo, and possibly many others). Greens are varigated pitt, texas sage, and varigated liriope. And many thanks to everyone who have and will participate in this flower show. It was very nice meeting all of you!

I'm here... Yes you made me LOL, That photo was very clever! I sure hope I get to make some flower arrangements, but I am really bad about not ever wanting to pick my flowers. I want to see them blooming outside! My yard is full of blooms now and has been for some time! I really will try to do one this week end! Try out my skills! I have not done flower arranging much, and a big problem will be to find a vase that will hold the flowers the way I want them to be. I don't have any of the florist stuff like frogs and oasises, or would that be oasii? LOL I will just have a container and flowers to work with. But I will try! |

Terri
Oh, I have lots of pictures of my plants all right, both in beds and containers! But this is supposed to be for flower arrangments so I will do it. I am rather excited about it now! It is evening now and I would get eaten alive if I go out now, but I have been thinking what flowers and greenery I can use. I am really looking forward to checking this out tomorrow! I can hardly wait for morning now! Do Canna flowers work in flower arrangements? I have lots of other things, but I thought of a canna flower that I may want to use. I know ya'll used canna foliage. I just didn't know if the flowers work as cut flowers. All of a sudden I am overwhelmed with ideas and combinations! Ya'll may have created a monster! |

Canna eh, well they are very posh and expensive over here, I want to see what you do with them
as I have never used them, I don't know how they perform so just try it!
Oasis is a brand name, they do loads of floristry products including floral foam. o.k!

Oh ya'll!!! I am so sorry and disappointed. It rained again and spoiled a lot of the flowers and even the zinnias aren't fit to put in a vase! I did a lot of deadheading. I am going to go out tomorrow and see if there is anything I can scrape together. On the bright side I did find a couple of the canna blooms I want to use and also a surprise Unflower that I want to use. What do you call stuff that isn't the greenery or flowers but is just an interesting or odd thing that you want to use in a bouquet? Well whatever you call it I have several of them. LOL Now if I just had some flowers that weren't mushy!!!

Since I'm taking Thursday and Friday this week off as vacation days I did up Friday's vase for supervisor's Mom last night.
The vase (tall white glazed ceramic vase, with raised up-side-down teardrop knobs, with the knobs painted yellow, orange, red, blue or green)
contains a couple stems each of sedum (Autum Joy, in bud, not blooming) yellow loostrife (dark bronze folliage with small bright yelow blooms) 5 large purple coneflowers, 3 liatrus (gay feather) and 3 cream lillies.
The whole thing stands 18" tall...
sorry no pic...

Thanks, Terri,
I am going to do this, really, I am, it's just that I have a hard time cutting the flowers from the garden and even more trouble buying them at the grocery when I have a garden full LOL! A Catch-22.

I agree: a beautiful gesture that I'm sure tickled her pink as the lily. And what is that lovely mauve coneflower we see from the side: rear right? A great color on that one, but the whole bouquet is cheerful to no end.
Suzy: I like your 'stuffing in a jar or pitcher' style. Lately I'm just plain too TIRED to cut any flowers and they're out there waiting. I'm just satisfied to think about cutting them and pondering what wonderful bouquets I could make. How sad is that? |

No Kidding BDale, That's exactly what I thought when I saw it -- and the Phlox! I love the scent of Phlox!
I have a lot of gigantic Cherokee Sunset Rudbeckias -- bright gold with that brown-black central cone. What would be an attractive vase for it? I have a lot of white ironstone-style pitchers, but they don't "do it" for this particular flower.
Any ideas?

Suzy, we were just discussing burlap yesterday, and I was thinking it may look nice to wrap the burlap around a container or vase with raffia and put your rudbeckias in it? I was thinking sort of a fall arrangement. Your pitchers sound nice. |

With burlap, the good old bushel basket comes to mind. I don't know what they're made from, a bark-like material, but would look so rustic full of sunflowers. Suzy, I should lend you my muted gold utensil holder from the kitchen for your suns! Or this red pitcher from Mexico. Too bad I don't grow sunflowers.

I have not done an arrangment yet! It rained a few more times since we talked about it. I will try but last time I looked I didn't find much I wanted to use. Catching up a bit with my admiration for these arrangements:
Kat7: That is such a lovely combination, and the story that goes with it touches the heart. How nice of you to use your flower arrangment to make somebody's birthday special!!
Reeboobala: Like everybody said: what a great choice of colors for that pitcher. I like looking through your window for a glimpse at the other beautiful flowers you have there too. :)
Suzy: LOL! I love the "Chock Full of Nuts" container, and my oh my, those flowers are just gorgeous!! |

Illoquin, great looking bouquet in a coffee can! That's a great floral arrangement that really tells us something about you as well as where you're from. Since burlap isn't your thing, I'm glad you didn't use it. And you have a great sense of humor! |

Oooh~ Dahlias! Welcome all you incoming, put on some lightweight clothes and get out and snip something. Even 'steamed' spinach draped over the right vessel would suffice LOL.
I also love the blues/yellows in the vase Reeebola, and Suzy's stunning yellows in the coffee can are right up my alley too. Is the coffee good?
I was up at 5 stuffing everything in bloom into a large vase to take to work Sunday a.m. Everyone loved it: bright red dahlias, purple dahlias, purple buddleia, white phlox, white and lav glads, white veronica spicata and bluish/lav of same, artemesia lactiflora ghizou, rudbeckia, velvet deep red snapdragons, purple monarda, a few nice daisies, some crocosmia sprays and leaves, coreopsis as a filler. NO PHOTO, sorry; but it was 'me' all over the place. I gave it to the highly stressed gal who has been working herself silly to get us all ready to convert to electronic communication only at work. She was most grateful: mission accomplished!
Here's my still "on the hoof" arrangement of a new dahlia "Park Record" which came from Illoquin! I absolutely love this flower, Suzy!
Terri "on the hoof" is slang for meat that still walking in animal form; in this case, flowers still on the plant. Click the image for an enlarged view.

This is my "Getting to know you" arrangement: something I arranged and posted on another thread...and someone (will edit with name later!) said I should join y'all here, as it seems we all love arranging cut flowers!
The "vase" is a hunk of slate that has a hole cut in the top for the flowers, and one in the bottom (larger) to fit a plant saucer in (it's glued in). The opening part has a floral frog in it to anchor the flowers. Sorry if I'm going into detail and everyone already knows about these...I bought it at a Christmas Bazarr a few years ago and the guy who made them lives on the outskirts of Yellowstone National Park...and said the stone is the same as that in YNP...cool, huh?

Ok ya'll, I finally did it !!!! I even made two for ya'll... Mind you, I did have to cut nearly every decent flower in my yard to do this, cause there just isn't much that was worthy of picking. The arrangements are very me... Use what I have, and make the best of it... and no fancy store bought vases, just ones that came with roses DH got froom WM! The 1st one... Terri these are the odd things I told you about... They are from "spent" canna blooms. There are green ones and there are burgundy ones. Click the image for an enlarged view.
