I got these plants at Lowes. No info on them and nobody that works there in the plant area knows what they are. Help! Sorry for the multiple posts, but I wanted to show all parts up close. First plant..

I'm not sure on the first plant but the second is Chlorophytum 'Fireflash' ... here's the link to Plant Files so you can read about it: http://davesgarden.com/pf/go/62897/

Thank you Plantladylin! I've been searching all over the internet for what these are - I knew I should have started here first. At least I can provide the proper care now. If anyone knows what the first plant is please let me know. One of the people working at Lowe's told me she thought it was Schefflera, but I'm not so sure about that.

Hey Sandykey! Can you post another photo of that first plant? It is definitely NOT a Sheff as ecrane3 stated. At first I thought it looked sorta like the ZZ plant which the big box stores sell. But, the growth pattern doesn't really look like that. Then I thought it kinda sorta looked like a Hoya ... the stems and leaves in the first photo ... but after looking at the close up I know that's not a Hoya. Maybe if you can get one more pic of the entire plant a bit clearer and closer and another of the leaves & stems? I know eventually someone will ID it correctly!

Sure, I took some more photos. I hope they come out better. I'm having a hard time getting a good photo of this plant. I just recently saw three of these plants lining a hallway in a medical center and they were really big and beautiful. It's driving me nuts that I don't know what it is, but I just know someone will be able to identify it. Okay, here is another photo of the whole plant..

It is such a pretty plant but not the ZZ and definitely not a Hoya either. It almost looks to me like an outdoor shrub but I really have no idea. Not familiar at all. Hopefully someone will recognize it so you will have a proper name to put with it!

I think you guys are right. The description seems to match. My plant has very shiny leaves and I just dug into the dirt and it did have tubers. I appreciate the help. It's frustrating having a plant and not knowing what it is.
Thanks again, Kim

I can understand your frustration. I was working at Lowe's in outside lawn and garden until they laid me off in June. A lot of our plants came in without any identification or care information. I bought a lot of sickly plants reduced in price. Some died unfortunately, and some have flourished. I bought the chlorophytum fireflash myself. I wouldn't mind some more care information myself. I started some seeds and I have many tiny seedlings at this point.

hey apartmentplant, that Fireflash is a beautiful plant! I really love mine. Follow the link that plantladylin put in one of the above posts- you can get some care info there. I haven't taken any of the seed pods off of mine yet. How will I know when they are dry? Do they turn brown or something? Anyhow, what I love most about Lowes are the plants that have tags that just say 'assorted foliage'. Gee, thanks for being so specific Lowes!
I hardly ever go to Home Depot so I'm not sure if theirs are any better.

Sandykey,

The flowers will dry out and turn brown as the seeds mature. I usually just crush the mature seed heads into the soil, and within a week or so, I have babies coming up.

The immature ones will still be somewhat green/yellow, and still moist.

Plus, all the seed heads won't dry at the same rate, so be sure to crush only the totally dry, brown ones.

Hope this helps!

Marsha.

Hi Sandy,
I purchased two ZZ plants at Home Depot last month. My friend has a plant in her windowless bathroom and it is thriving, so I gave it a shot, as my house has very little natural light coming in. Well, they are doing great! I have them on a buffet which is against an inside wall, so hardly any light gets to it from the window. I just love these plants! They always look shiny and healthy, and they are quick growers. Good luck with yours!
