I was just reading a couple threads on what works for some in the way of "general" cleaning & picking up...Zones (however you break them up if it's FL's zones, or your own zones)...

My problem is not in the method, so much as in the 'staying on task' part. I know many of you can relate to this:

Come home from work, must start dinner. Need a pan. None clean. Here's one by the sink...we'll just wash it and use it.
Can't. Sink full of dishes.
Proceed to load dishwasher.
Sink is now disgusting...get out the scrubbie, and do sink.
Where's the towel to dry my hands? (not where it lives)...ah, here it is on the counter.
Ick- I need a new one, this is yucky...must take it to the laundry room.
May as well start a load while I'm in here.
May as well fold this load that's in the dryer...
Oh, here's a buck in a pocket...I'll put that in my purse in the kitchen.
What is all this crap on the counter? Mail, receipts, seeds, more crap...must do something with all this...proceed to clean up counter...
Toss things away...things won't fit in the trash, so that shoud be taken out...take the trash out.
Back to counter...what are these seed heads? They need to be spread out so they'll dry
Proceed to get out a pile of tupperware so you can spread various seeds out on the counter.
Hear voice from the other room: "Honey, what's for dinner?"
Shoot.

(but the dishes are done, and the trash is gone, and the laundry is sorta worked on, and the counter is, well, messier than it was before, but...)

Can ya RELATE to all this??!!!

How do YOU stay on task if you're as flighty as I am???

Boy, that story sounds sooooo familiar. I had quite a problem with starting the washer, go to get a load of laundry, but by the time I made it back to the laundry room with the load ---- an hour or so later --- the washer had gone through the cycle. Learned to leave the lid up on the washer so at least it would stop before at the end of the wash cycle if I got side tracked.

Yep, we all get that way! That is why I like the timers. I know I can't work on another thing or leave that area until the timer goes off. It helps when you no longer have kids in the house, but my cats even get me sidetracked. They will meow to go out and I get sidetracked there.

I too have this problem! You all sound like me. I am NOT lazy by any means but am disorganized, get distracted constantly and I do procrastinate a lot. I can "work" on things all day and then in the end not really have anything done. In a work environment I am very productive and organized but at home - wow do I have problems. Three years ago I married someone who has a lot of "stuff" - this was so overwhelming that it was the impetus to start getting organized and more efficient. It has slowly been working.
Recently I hurt my leg and wanted to do some embroidery while unable to work - but could not locate all the supplies even though I have so many scattered throughout the house. That right there has now inspired me to really declutter and only keep what I will use in the near future.

Yes, that is exactly why I love to be organized. I love it when I need something and then can find it! If you realize how much time you spend looking for things it really helps you keep on track because you realize it takes less time and it more helpful to be organized. Having said that--I get really off track still, it seems to be just our nature. I had an injury this summer too and got really lax. I am trying to do my Spring cleaning now! Better late than never? LOL!

I bought one of those handy timers from the Flylady and carry it around all the time, trying to keep it on the frig. I also carry my cell phone with me and use the timer on it to keep me on track. Alas-somedays I lose them both! All one can do is keep trying! LOL!

Hey cactus patch! You got hurt too huh? Anyway, I like fall cleaning better than spring cleaning anyway. In spring I am too busy gardening to be doing any deep cleaning.
Fall seems to be the perfect time to clean - getting ready to spend the winter indoors a lot, etc. This season always inspires me to bake and cook and get domestic. I do cook a lot anyway - but like it even more when cooler weather rolls around.

Ildikogardens--I agree totally! I didn't really get hurt, had a bad bout of plantar faciitis from trying to walk too much in the Spring. Worst I have had and the Dr. wanted to do surgery. But I chose Physical Therapy, which works but takes longer and kept me off my feet all summer. This time of year I get real domestic too. I think summer brings on more salads and grilling and I don't bake as much, so Fall makes me want to bake.

I agree with the timers. I love doing Flylady stuff. If you get in a routine it works good too. Set your timer for 15 min. and just work in one spot. Eventually you'll be able to come home and the dishes are clean . you wont have to clean one or search for one. Believe me I was the same way. I couldn't start anything because there was always a space to be cleaned. I admit I'm not perfect by any means but now I put my dishes in dishwasher after eating at night. This way its clean first thing in the morning. If we keep up these routines all year long we wont have spring or fall cleaning and still make time for our gardens. This morning I swished my toilet, vacuumed, did one load of clothes, then went outside and put some fall plants in. Now its almost noon. I came in to rest. lol. Got to go to work in a few hours. Good luck everyone. Yvonne

Totally correct Vonny, just that I call Spring cleaning when I go through things to give to good will, dust decorative things on high cabinets and shelves or wash the windows and blinds inside and out. Those things are not in my year 'round schedule.

Hello Lamb,

While I'm not familiar with the flylady, there are a lot
of threads about her:

[HYPERLINK@davesgarden.com]

A scroll through the list and you will find many posts about her.
There are a few which mention her specifically in the title of
the threads.

Hope this helps,

So, you could make a score card, 1 point for this, 2 for that, etc. Reward yourself with something you really want when you get to 10, 25, 50, 100. Good motivation with nice rewards.

Birdsnblooms, we share the same life!

I don't stay on task. I don't get things finished. I don't ever seem to get the house entirely clean.

I do have wonderful, creative, huge ideas. :) And then I can't find the parts to get them started.

I have ADD.

Has anyone out there tried neuro-feedback for their ADD? I've been training about 6 weeks now and am able to do organizing things I never could before. It just feels "natural". I don't even think about it. Amazing. I still get overwhelmed sometimes, but it IS getting better.

Well, first they do a quantitative EEG to map the way your brain functions. From the slow waves in my pre-frontal cortex I was diagnosed with ADD and the behavioral symptoms fit as well. For training I go in 3-4 times a week and play video games with my brain. Sounds like science fiction, but I am noticing a difference.

I didn't know there were different types of ADD. According to ones wave pattern, a site on the brain is picked to train. I'm on my second site and it seems to be making much more of a difference than the first. I guess when things aren't working well there is an excess of theta waves, so we work to "train them down". I sit in a passive, but alert stance and watch the screen. When my waves do what they should to function normally, I am rewarded with a movement on the screen and an audible signal. After the session, usually 1 to a few minutes, we check the graph to see how I did. What one looks for is a downward trend to see that the particular point of the brain is responding.

The method is questioned by some, and it is expensive, but I look forward to doing things more easily without having to go on drugs and to getting my five year old off drugs.

Hope that helps.

If you see that you are making progress, both on the charts and at home, then it is not so far fetched. Often those who oppose new methods are those who are making money from treating people with the old ones. I hope you are successful at getting your son off the drug treatment. At what age could he be treated with the neuro-feedback method?

He's doing it now. He's the youngest they've treated and we have a little trouble with him holding still enough for the results to be read properly, but he and I love to compare what "games" we've played recently.

When I feel scattered I just set my timer for 15 minutes (yes I know it is a flylady thing but I was doing that years before with my dd) and start with the closest thing. If you break it down you realize that most jobs only take 15 minutes. Nowadays I need to rest my feet and so I like to watch a tv show and only get up to work during the commercials. If you get up and do something Every time one comes on it is amazing how much you can do. I do fold clothes while watching the show, or dust. But usually just sit and enjoy.
