The electrical connections are the closest thing to danger, and it doesn't matter how big you are.

Most ceiling fans are installed with a small bracket and the electrical connections first, then the motor connects to that in a separate step. Depending on the fan of course, it can be kind of heavy, and you'll need a small step ladder or something to get up there. Maybe you could get a helper? But you might not need one.

I have swagged them, and replaced light fixtures with ceiling fans. Not all that difficult. Need to be sure of how secure the mounting is - depending on weight.

Preferred brands: Hunter, Casablanca, Emerson.

But we have had some other brands - not much impressed with Hampton - they have some that look great, but some are noisy. We have a crystal one in the dining room - noisy, but beautiful. Not used much, so OK.

Found a dealer who handles nothing except ceiling fans - had some good advice and a wealth of catalogs from many manufacturers - also explained that even though you may see some big names at the big-box stores, those are not the same ass the "top of the line" fans from the same manufacturer. He even showed some Hunters on his workbench so we could see what he was talking about.

As some die, or we just don't like what wass in the house, we are replacing with better fans.

Have you installed it yet? I recently installed one with my husband's help. I did all the installing and he helped to hold it sometimes. It can get hairy at times as you balance in the ladder, so it is good and safe to have someone to help or at least steady the ladder.
Turn off the circuit breaker to your rooms lighting. Turn off the light switch also. I had to use a lamp in the outlet to see better. The outlets were on separate circuits. Then I just wired away. Sounds easy, but there are also pitfalls as with any installation. But it was a success and I now have my ceiling fan in my room. LOL
It was a small one with a regular ceiling height. Cathedral ceilings would be really challenging for one person.

I have two Casablanca ceiling fans that are about 20 years old. They still work perfectly with absolutely no noise.

Casablanca and hunter are good fans, Casablanca being about double the cost.

Our Casablanca is still going strong after 20 years, too. So is the Hunter Douglas (isn't that Home Depot's line?) but that one is definitely noisier.

I have a couple of Hunter ceiling fans that I am real happy with and they never get turned off. They don't make any noise either. They are heavier than the cheap brands so to do it right you have to put a splice box that is ceiling fan rated and attach it to ceiling fan brackets that attach to the ceiling joists up in the attic. They sell them at Lowes and Home Depot and they are not that expensive. They also have these plastic round disks that go between the fan and the ceiling for a nice finishing touch and they come in various designs.

drsanderson, I have a Hampton Bay tropical ceiling fan in living room. I would never go back to the little puny ones again as this one has nice leaf blade that give the room that tropical look. As with anything electrical I would hire someone with knowdledge on the subject doesn't have to necessarily be a licensed electrician just some one with the basics. As for air output, I don't think mine puts out the air that the smaller one did but I mainly use it for looks. I'ts heavy so think you are too small to handle it alone at least I was. You may need an extra brace in the ceiling to hold it.

Did the blue wire and the black wire get attached to the "hot" black wire? and both white wires to the white neutral? Is there power at the bulb socket?

What about the light switch?

The light kit is a separate part and requires proper installation. Were instructions available and followed?

I have hung and replaced many ceiling fans, and ocassionally the instructions are not exactly the same.

Also have had switches "die". Not hard to replace, but just be sure to take the faulty part to get an exact replacement as there are several different kinds. Fortunately for me - the supply store was only a mile away, so making a second run to get the "Proper" switch was only a small waste of time - lesson learned!

Bubba, think you might have something. Wires are all ok but didn't think about switch since it was new, but had been sitting in box for don't know how long and could have gotten moisture from garage or something. Thanks

Easiest thing is use a meter to find out if the switch is bad then to find out if the light kit is getting electricity.

BTW Hampton Bay is Home Despots house brand and my be made by over 30 different suppliers so there is a little luck of the draw involved with that.
