The electrical connections are the closest thing to danger, and it doesn't matter how big you are.
Most ceiling fans are installed with a small bracket and the electrical connections first, then the motor connects to that in a separate step. Depending on the fan of course, it can be kind of heavy, and you'll need a small step ladder or something to get up there. Maybe you could get a helper? But you might not need one.
I have swagged them, and replaced light fixtures with ceiling fans. Not all that difficult. Need to be sure of how secure the mounting is - depending on weight.
Preferred brands: Hunter, Casablanca, Emerson.
But we have had some other brands - not much impressed with Hampton - they have some that look great, but some are noisy. We have a crystal one in the dining room - noisy, but beautiful. Not used much, so OK.
Found a dealer who handles nothing except ceiling fans - had some good advice and a wealth of catalogs from many manufacturers - also explained that even though you may see some big names at the big-box stores, those are not the same ass the "top of the line" fans from the same manufacturer. He even showed some Hunters on his workbench so we could see what he was talking about.
As some die, or we just don't like what wass in the house, we are replacing with better fans.
Have you installed it yet? I recently installed one with my husband's help. I did all the installing and he helped to hold it sometimes. It can get hairy at times as you balance in the ladder, so it is good and safe to have someone to help or at least steady the ladder.
Turn off the circuit breaker to your rooms lighting. Turn off the light switch also. I had to use a lamp in the outlet to see better. The outlets were on separate circuits. Then I just wired away. Sounds easy, but there are also pitfalls as with any installation. But it was a success and I now have my ceiling fan in my room. LOL
It was a small one with a regular ceiling height. Cathedral ceilings would be really challenging for one person.
