I'm sure any of you who remember my posts back earlier this year remember how thrilled I was to obtain two large potted Christmas Palms. One was a 4-trunk and the other a 2-trunk. We've kept the two-trunk Palm indoors and my only complaint is the darn Spider Mites. They have really give me a hard time... several trips outside to wash the tree off, soap sprays, and the like. It's not easy moving a 8.5' tree in a 24" pot in and out of the house.
But the spider mites I can deal with. It's my 4-trunk palm that's outside that has me worried. Over the summer it's become more and more discolored. At first I thought it was just sun-burn. It came from a local nursery (who got it from Florida) and I put it out in the full sun. But for weeks this didn't seem to be a problem (May - June). But in mid-July the temps got into the 90's and lately they've been insane up in the 102-106 range around here. I water the palm almost every day, at least every other day. I've also fertilized it - using a palm fertilizer with micro-nutrients. I specifically made sure it was getting what was recommended for Veitchia's.
So my theories.
1.) It's really just getting too much sun and I'm seeing the older leaves turn yellow as a result of this burn. AND/OR
2.) It's actually getting leached of its nutrients by all my watering. Despite fertilizing it, maybe I'm washing away the pellets too quickly - especially with a good watering almost every day. AND/OR
3.) And I *REALLY* hope it's not this. But that somehow it got lethal yellowing back when it was in Florida, and somehow has just survived half the year in a pot until now. I find this unlikely, but I know how common YL is in this palm.
So... that all said, theorized, and what not... maybe this picture will help. Sorry it was so dark. I'll try and get another in good light. For now, we've moved the tree behind our house in the woods for a bit more shade. Ironically my other Veitchia (from in the house) is also back there bc of a recent spider mite problem.
The palms I love are giving me stress! LOL
