I live in Northridge, California in a house that was originally built in the early 1950s. The fire place opening is offset or recessed 7.5 inches on the left side relative to the right. See attached picture. I am trying to determine why this is and if there is any reason why I cannot build out the left side so that its flush with the right (other than local building code regulations)?
