    Saw this while out fishing today. I have never seen it before. Sorry about the picture quality. When we pulled into the dock, there was another one flitting across the dock and into the woods. It had a black head, reddish brown neck and chest and bright yellow legs and feet.

    Green Heron Butorides virescens. I guess they're not called 'Little Green Heron' anymore.

    I saw that in my bird book but thought this guy looked too big. Thanks! He's quite the interesting looking creature.

    This also answers a question I have had for years. We hear a barking sound in the marshes. I thought maybe it was some kind of frog but, then I thought maybe some kind of duck made the noise. There is a blues band in Minneapolis called the Minnesota Barking Ducks. I thought the band had heard the sound, knew it to be a duck and thus, the name.

    Not.

    The green heron makes this sound.

    Everyday, something new!
