When can you cut down asparagus? It came with the acreage when we bought it. My husband loves it and told me that we have to let it go to seed, but when can I cut it back without killing off next springs crop?

you can cut it anytime, believe me it grows wild here also. the roots are where it grows back from, they are a perennial. the female plants are the one with the seeds. the 'tame asparagus has cultivar's that are male so you don't get the seeds, just the shoots.
the seeds will just blow everywhere and start new colonies.

But it will make the best crop next year if you let it grow all summer till killed by frost.
