Our market manager attended a conference last week. He is new this year & full of energy. They talked about numbers of people coming to the market. Also some formula for estimating the numbers coming. He did that Thursday & Saturday. Thursday counted 500 & Saturday 2050. I always new we had lots of people come through, but it's nice to know the numbers.
We had the biggest day this year on Saturday, even though we were short on cucumbers & summer squash things because of cool weather this past week.
Watermelons are at their peak, flavor is great this year. Probably due to dry summer. We cut most of the melons & sell halves or quarters. Quarters bring $1.50 to $3.00 each. The only way to sell melons for good profit. Most ladies say they would rather pay that for a piece than $4 or $5 for a whole one & end up throwing some away. We get lots of people coming every time for a piece of melon.
Our food inspector lets us cut, but we have a stainless steel table & the soap, sanitizer, & rinse containers for the tools. Also the melons are washed off with sanitizer before cutting. Pieces are put in heavy plastic bags & tied shut. We can only leave pieces on the table for a short time or else discard them. DS is very good at estimating how many we need at any one time, so none go to waste. At end of day, if some are left, we give them to other vendors.
