John's pics are much better suited to starting a new thread...but #4 is just tooo long for me now, and he is busy doing real life things, so I will try to fill in...so here are a couple of pink anemonefish swimming in their graceful home, with various corals in the background...enjoy!

Here's a closer look at the Pinks just for you.

I would love to reach out and touch the anemone to see if it's as wispy/wiggly as it looks. Your beautiful pink fish really bring out the "light brite effect" of the anemone.

The fingerprint is really cool John. That's the first time I've ever seen anything like that. How big are they?

Yep anemones are the whispy, graceful, dancing, beauties of the u/w world. They move with the currents, our motion, fish motion...every little breeze of the u/w wind. Like the featherfans, some of my favorite undersea creatures.

edited to change the to they! (duh!)

That's just how I imagined them.

I like the feather dusters, er, featherfans too! They look like something that Indians might have used for weapons, yet looked soft also.

I love learning about all of the creatures that God has planted in the sea. Thank you all for sharing with me.

Shari, I have seen Fathom before, what a great publication! Incredible photographers in each issue. Thanks for the praise, glad you like my work...

The fingerprint tongue is about 1.5 inches long...about the same size and shape as a tootsie roll...

will work on some new splits for consideration soon...can't get in the water quite yet but in 2 weeks i should have some strength back in the ol' trigger fingers..

really cant wait to get in, been quite a while and getting a little barn sour now...

I know what you mean...not for the same reason though. When we go back to the mainland, like our upcoming Thanksgiving trip, its 5 or 6 weeks without submergence...we start getting a little twitchy...especially JB! Get back and immediately throw ourselves under the water. You definately have my sympathies!

Thanks K ! We went out on Shaggy (the pontoon boat) yesterday...nobody had cameras, but we sure had a lot of fun. My GD and her friend (both 4 yrs old) are just learning the joy to be found watching the underwater world, and its so much fun to watch them get excited over the simplest things. They are a couple of "fish" themselves! Get up on the boat for a quick drink or snack and then back in the water! And "Grumpy" my DH had to give them rides on his back, zooming further away from the boat than we would normally let them go...good times. Here is an interesting shot...you'll have to blow it up to see it, but look closely into the bubble and you'll see the reflection of my DH!

Cool pic, Shari! Your story about the girls reminds me of ME in Bora Bora. We took the boat out twice a day to the reef and I was just like a kid (40, but still a kid!). The boat minder would give us bread to give to the (I think) angel fish and they would eat out of our hands. I can still remember those little nibblers and how funny I sounded laughing underwater! Took me two years to pay for that trip, and it was worth every penny!

You're bringing back such wonderful memories.

Bathtubs large and small - kids love being wet! And I think that swimming for the joy of it, not laps for exercise (yuck!!!) brings out the kid in all of us. One more reason that I hope John's hand gets strong enough soon for him to get back in the water. The waters around Bora Bora are very similar to our waters...warm and full of life. When we were on Moorea, the next island closer to Tahiti, we would jump in the water for our morning ablutions instead of taking a shower. I am sure your trip was worth it...it is a wonderful, wonderful place.!

I was so tired last night, after trying to keep up with those girls all day, that I slept like the dead...and today I've been working in the garden all day, so I'm tired again! I love it!! For an insomniac like me, this is a very good thing. Now I am listening to the rain make a mess of my pretty pots, oh well, it is very good for what is in the pots!

We have sure slowed down on the underwater pics, haven't we. It is a testament to all the other things going on in this forum! Well, just to show that we still have an interest in u/w things, I am going to post this pic of a friend diving with mantas off an island called Yap, in the Federated States of Micronesia. Pohpei, the island I visited in May is also in the FSM, but unfortunately we didn't get over to Yap which is known for the number of mantas who make their home there.

That manta picture is awesome! Is it really that big or is that an affect of the camera? I agree that the bubbles in the corner are beatiful. I have often found myself looking at the pictures posted here and being fascinated by seemingly insignificant things that you would not notice at first glance. It is amazing how many different things you can find in them if one just takes the time to really look rather than just "skim" over the photo.

No Ann - it really is that big. They are magnificent creatures! I use to catch hold and ride them when I was younger, but now they tell us that the oils from our hands can be harmful, so I don't do that anymore...even with gloves on. But the are so curious about us, and sometimes they will come right up to us as if we were part of their cleaning crew...then I do pet - but only with gloves. Glad you guys like the pic of my darlin! I'm having it blown up and framed for his birthday...its a surprise. By your reactions though, I'm sure he will like it.

She is almost 90...still living alone. Tonight went to dinner with other very good friends. His birthday is 2 days from now and we have to say grace that both the guys have made it this far...sure wish you and JB could have been here too...we would all make a good group.

Great Ray photo Shari!!! What a magnificent creature!

I thought I'd better check in here to let you all know that we're OK. We had some pretty severe winds early this morning at about 3:30 am. I slept through the whole thing. Streets are flooded. Haven't been out there to assess the all the plants yet, but most of the cannas and other tall plants are laying over.

I don't know yet if Humberto is finished with us. 75,000 people here are without power this morning. I feel fortunate to have power. Humberto came in with 85 mph winds.

I will check in with you folks later on and post some photos. Please keep us all in your prayers.

This was not a sad day...she was 90 and ill...her husband of 95 went on 4 months ago. They were short one week being married 71 years. Now that is a record.

Then his younger sister died two years ago at 93. Now my mom is 93 and we know it is just a matter of time - she is the last of her family. That will be the hardest, but we are somewhat prepared and know it will be time for her to rest. Going home is a lovely way to put it.

Hard to loose your mother, I know that. But she is in the next life with my dad and that is all that matters. Everyday I think, I'll ask momma, she will know. Ask as many questions as you can possibly think of...time is short.

Not thinking this is bad. Never dreamed I would be 65 years old!!! That is old! Heck no. It is not. Body is failing but my mind is better than ever. My garden has given me new life as has my association with DG. From here you do not see the spots on my hands...they were gained by years on the lake...water skiing...fishing...teaching the kids to swim/water ski...hanging clothes on the lines to dry...even had a vegetable garden...mowing the grass, which was the only thing I did that I could see where I had been.

Here I have gone on another tangent. Gardening is so much more than the seed in the ground. It is the love of each other and appreciating everyday that I am still here.

As you can tell...today has made my heart very tender and I love you all. Sometimes we need to be reminded that life is short. Take advantage of each and every moment.

Happy happy day! John, I don't know if JB would ever agree to using all that equipment! He wants to take good pics - and your's are a constant inspiration, but he also just enjoys the heck out of diving! And all that gear must take so much attention, and time!! Whoosh! He went out on a nite dive last Saturday and he and one other guy (yeah! a witness!!) saw the most unusual anemone ...neither one had seen it before, and when they describe it no one else recognizes it, and it isn't in any of our myriad of books! There have been several new species found out here, and they are thinking this might be another one, but neither of them had their cameras!!!! It was oceanside - not in the lagoon, so hard to pinpoint the location, but they are thinking of getting a large group together to go try to find it again. Cool beans huh?

Hi, J. Good Saturday Morning. My son had 6 goats a few months ago...wanted them to clean up the pasture...couldn't believe how pickey they were...wouldn't touch the burrs.
Sold 'em...said they stink too much.

Looking at something that has got to very unnatural just outside my window...a baby cardinal cleaning its beak on a banana leaf. Of course banana in my part of the world is unnatural.

Something else not natural. We are working on a bottle tree today. Have wanted one for years. DH found a post yesterday...10' cedar, sunk it in concrete last night and gonna put the dowels in it today. Already have a few colored bottles collected. I'm so excited.

Hi, everyone.

I have been reading through this thread. Beautiful pictures, everyone. I really enjoyed it. As I was telling Islandshari in a private d-mail earlier, I don't scuba but one of those days, I'm going to treat myself and learn. I am definitely a reincarnation of a sea creature. I mean to say that I am at my best in water, be it lake or ocean.

Carriblue, I could kick myself. I just realized you live in Grand Cayman. We were there on Sept. 6th, as our cruise ship stopped for the day. Had I known, I would have tried to arrange to meet you. I tried to do that in Hawai'i with AlohaHoya but life saw to it that it didn't pan out. No matter, the next time we pass by Grand Cayman, I'll drop you a line. Same goes for you, AlohaHoya.

Looking forward to the next photo's!

Everytime I check out this thread the following song always goes through my head...

I’d like to be under the sea in an octopus’s garden in the shade,
He’d let us in, knows where we’ve been, in his octopus’s garden in the shade.
I’d ask my friends to come and see an octopus’s garden with me.
I’d like to be under the sea in an octopus’s garden in the shade.
We would be warm below the storm in our little hide-a-way beneath the waves.
Resting our head on the sea bed in an octopus’s garden near a cave.
We would sing and dance around because we know we can’t be found.
I’d like to be under the sea in an octopus’s garden in the shade.
We would shout and swim about the coral that lies beneath the waves.
Oh what joy for every girl and boy knowing they’re happy and they’re safe.
We would be so happy, you and me, no-one there to tell us what to do,
I’d like to be under the sea in an octopus’s garden with you.

Hope everyone is well on this first day of Autumn 2007

A Scuba Club Party is an excuse for us all to see each other as humans, not as funny faced fish. Keep in mind that most of the time when we see each other our faces have mask marks, we are totally bedraggled from a day on a boat, or we are getting ready to go out on a boat and we are in cover-ups and sun screen.

I thought this was an interesting shot...its the back end of a Long Nosed Filefish - but its the various types of coral that I found cool...you guys are sure gonna get bored with all my posts of "cool coral formations"!

Went over yesterday and fed them with her. They will literally get into your hand. Watch me be posting this right on top of John, but I'll give it a try. The orange striped shell with the snail poking out a bit is the cowrie...the clearish anemone looking goody with the orange color on the end of the tentacles is the corallimorph.

Actually Pep, you are looking at it wrong. It is sort of half egg shaped, with the flatter side on the ground (the dark bits), the mantle of the snail going in and out gives the cowries their signature shine...some of the most prized of shells. Hundreds of types...and John, JB has two Goldens! Found them oceanside, both during the same dive. For those unaware, the Golden Cowrie is one of the most coveted shells in the world. Very valuable. Not as much these days, but in the 80's we would be offered $600 or more for one shell. Never sold any...wouldn't want to. But many people did.

John, from what we can find out... the Orange Ball is completely a Caribbean creature. Have you any idea what one would be doing out here? Tis another mystery...
Also explains why no one else out here had seen one. It was found in a surge channel in about 20 ft of water...very odd.

Hi, everyone. The pictures on this thread are so beautiful, so relaxing.

I am an experienced aquarist who has kept fish for over 40 years, a few of which were dedicated to saltwater fish. I stopped keeping saltwater fish when I found out that most fish in the aquarium trade were caught using cyanide directly on the reefs. Fish caught that way never thrive. That explained why it was so difficult to keep saltwater fish alive for more than a month or 2, despite the best equipment money could buy.

I gave away the saltwater fish, sold the complicated paraphernalia that was necessary to almost keep them alive, dumped the saltwater and returned to freshwater. I then filled the tank with tap water and Malawi cichlids born and raised by a friend of mine. Tourists, business and coral reefs don't mix. People who collect reef fish for collectors half a world away should be keelhauled. Now that we live in a small condo, there is no space for an aquarium room. My fish now live on my computer screen, thanks to SereneScreen.

I had a friend on the island of Kiribati who sold tropical fish. He didn't use cyanide...very natural fisherman. He would only sell to places with good reputations, or private aquariums. His questionaire for new clients was 3 pages long! Cracked me up, but he said his goal was not to get rich, but to educate, so he was very particulare about who he would sell to. He has since passed away, and I think that the loss was felt across the US through the aquariums that no longer can display his fish.

Your late friend was a rare collector. I can't tell you how often I bought a fish for big money only to have it wither and die in a matter of weeks because it had been collected with cyanide involved.

The fish looks good in the shop. You buy it. You acclimate it into a sparsely populated, well established aquarium. making sure everyone will get along. You feed it the best food, you raise brine shrimp you lovingly feed with an eye dropper, you chop up the freshest shrimp you can get your hands on. You purchase caulerpa for your herbivores, you keep a patch of algae on the side windows for your grazers. You make sure all your parameters: salt, trace elements, light, nitrites are within acceptable parameters. It's enought to drive anyone crazy.

You stand by the aquarium as your fish does worse and worse every day until one day, you come home and mercifully, it's dead. I remember a beloved platax orbiculatus I was so glad to have aquired for a king's ransom. I then watched it die for nearly 3 months before it went to that great big reef in the sky. I cried for 2 days. I tell you, when I heard that cyanide thing, I packed it in and quit the saltwater aquarium hobby in disgust and protest. I wouldn't buy ivory products, why would I buy such fish? Nevermore, nevermore.

Sylvain.

Cool shrimp John!

I guess I didn't say that right...my friend sold to places like Scripps Aquarium and Ocean Journey...big aquariums. I think he sold some to a particular retail outfit, but I don't remember which one...His goal was to educate people about tropical species, not to cage the fish. He was a man much like you John. But rather than pictures he sent the fish themselves. He would lecture reef walkers constantly about doing no damage.

We are cleaning up our tank house, and doing some much needed work on the marina...I am making a large poster of your saying to have laminated and placed in a position where all will see it. Every little reminder is a good thing.

Of course, the fishermen will pay no heed...but they feed many and nothing gets caught just for show, so I can't get mad at them.

Hi Randy! So glad you've joined us here. I miss you too. I don't think Connie and I will make the meet in October. Too much "life" going on here. I shared the post of your Tree Fern "La Fern" photo (on the other thread) in the coleus Forum. I had mentioned that I had one. Someone asked about them. I posted a photo of mine. It's a poor specimen compared to yours. Then I saw yours in that thread, so I directed them there. This is an awesome bunch of folks that I'm sure you are gonna enjoy.

For those that don't know it, Randy has a wonderful tropical garden right in the midst of Texas. I don't think he has a blade of grass in his back yard at all. It's all big huge tropical giants. Lush and blooming like crazy!!

Shari, your crab looks cute as he can be there on the anemone. Love the color contrast in the photo.

John, when I opened that photo up, for some reason I can see a face on the back of the crab. My first thought was Inagadadivita! HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA Don't ask me why. That just popped into my brain! My second thought was ... sure looks like more to eat on that one than the Daddy Long Legged Crab! :/

John, I'm so glad you're able to get back to work. I'm sure things have been piling up on you. Just take it easy and don't get in a hurry to get things done. Use the brace as you need it. Don't be like my hubby who's motto is "No pain, no gain!" You surely don't want to undo all of what the doctor has done.

Inagadadavita?? Now there is a blast from the past!!!

This isn't a very good picture, but this is a BlackHermit trying to stuff himself in this finger shell. He's about 5 inches wide, and the shell is not much bigger, but he managed to get most of him in there before JB got the picture. The BlackHermits are not as common out here, so it was fun to see this guy.

Every time I let the fern touch my skin I had itching and whelps. Didn't last past a few hours like Poison Ivy does but it was enough that it was annoying. Probably should have just moved it somewhere that I didn't get close to it...instead I gave it to the lawn guys. He also has a small nursery so he probably potted and resold it. That was ok with me.

LouC,
I bought an Assie Tree Fern, this year, fell in love with it at a nursery. Picked it up myself (bare arms) to take it to the checkout - no warning on the tag...I was ichy all day. Did not associate it with the plant until I did some research. Like the old pink insulation reaction.

I planted it in a out of the way spot beside my driveway, but it really struggles. Was told they were pretty tough and easy to grow...not sure what doin with mine. But I love it and would like to see it get bigger.

Same Same, I was told by one gal at a garden shop, who has one that they require very little care and attention (my kind of plant!)
If its going to have "Australian" , in its name you would think it would be tough!
I watered it lots after planting it and it was doing well, but I have now left it to fend for itself. Its the rainy season, so I am hoping for the best.
They are suppose to get pretty big, so it would be cool to see it grow up!

To this size this summer, the only change was...watering the fuzzy trunk everyday. I learned that the fuzzy portion (and I'm sure there is a lovely botanical term for it), but I like fuzzy portion-- is actually part of the root system. You can tell that was definately a hit with this tree! I will say this...They are difficult the first 3 years. I have 2 others...I brought back from Hawaii..they were little fuzz balls and while they are on they're second year, I'm having a heck of time with them. Seems like if you get them to hit 3 years...they toughen up a bit.

In one year I went from looking down at it, to looking up at it. It's even bigger than this picture now. From one frond tip to the other it has a 13 foot span. It now looks like some of the ones I saw at the Botanical gardens in Kauai

The deck is sort of like the deck of a ship, sailing through a jungle. This picture is during a rainstorm, thus the blured effect, which was not intentional, but turned out kind of cool. Blooming off the edge of the deck are Shell gingers that get about 12 feet tall here, brugs, Ti tree, bromeliads..etc.etc.

Christi its a shame that a plant you liked so much bothered you so much that you had to give it away. Guess its some kind of protection mechanism in the plant.

Cath - I love the sculpture! There is a guy in the Rocky's that does this type of tree sculpture and he is very popular. There is an entire outdoor history museum up in Winter Park/Fraser, Colorado that uses his stuff. The one you posted is beautiful, and I agree with Jenny that its good to see something beautiful come from such a disaster.

In keeping with the sculpture theme, here are some underwater sculpture pieces:

Hi, everyone.

Islandshari, that picture of a feather star is just wonderful. I agree with you when you say you wouldn't trade your rock for the world. This thread is getting long but thanks to my high-speed internet, I don't have to wait too long for the page to load. You pay a bit more but it's worth it.

I recently promised to post a few of my snorkeling pictures. I must regretfully renege on my promise. Those pictures are so unvelievably pitiful compared to your great pictures, I'd only be embarassing myself. They'll just put you to sleep. I guess I'll keep them for myself. That Palankar reef in Cozumel was devasted years ago by a hurricane. It still hasn't recovered.

It has been raining very heavily here since Thursday and we are under severe flooding threat. Florida is basically at sea level and flat as a pancake. Maybe I'll get to use my underwater camera right hee on the lawn in a few hours.

Take care, all.
