I have a real old ugly post lamp. Instead of just replacing the post lamp with another one I want to put up a brick piller in its place with a light sitting on the top. This cant be too tall, wide or ornate. Our house is a small ranch with taupe vinyl siding so the piller, or pilaster as I have also heard them called, has to be modest. I'm thinking of no bigger than a 16 X 16 concrete foundation, some kind of light colored stone and a cap. I'm not sure what the right height should be. The piller would be hollow of course. I also want an outdoor electrical box on one side to plug in outdoor x-mas lights. We have plenty of electricity and a four way electrical receptacle going to the post that's there now. I have no experience laying stone or brick. Is this a do-it-yourself, are there any plans around or should I just bite the bullet and get a professional? I have sucessfully laid a flagstone patio in cement and about 85' of walkway. BTW I'm a near retirement age gal with a hubby recovering from rotater cuff surgery. DH's help would be confined to paying the bill.
