Now as you know I am only an adopted tropical dreamer...so while nothing can compare to the exotic beauty of the colourful and fragrant tropical flowers...there is a certain short lived but exciting beauty to be had as Winter changes to Spring
so come and see what is in my garden and later other ozzy gardens...for now here are some blossoms...and best of all food is what they leave in their wake...the most yummy plums... necterines...quinces ...persimmons etc
Starting with the necterine ( please allow for the fact that my garden has been battered by strong winds )

And here is the wonderful quince...you stew it up until it turns a lovely garnet colour...so good and just a couple of the fruit scent the whole house with a rich pineapple peach fragrance.

The persimmons are not in blossom yet their blossom comes out hidden in the fully emerged leaves ...but look at the pretty leaves...I love the colour of them in spring...a little ladybird is out foraging but won't find anything there...they are just about pest free!

Moving away from the blossoms... I want to show you my Banksia Rose...this is named after Sir Joseph Banks... a botanist who came with Sir Auther Phillip to Australia to record the strange flora found here in Australia...everything here was unknown back in England...can you imagine trying to describe (in great detail) the strange new plants and trees in the "New World".The Banksia rose
is thornless and can grow to quite large proportions...it only has one huge Spring display...it remains evergreen in most climates...mine is the double white and has the scent of wild violets
I wish you could smell it!

Question Chrissy...your Banksia Rose...There was a botonist named Banks that travelled with Captain Cook on his Pacific Voyages...was this the same Banks? I don't remember an Arthur Phillip in the Cook adventures, but maybe Banks returned after Cook was killled??? Just so curious because the whole Cook saga is fascinating to me.

See Christi - you aren't the only one who ends up OT!!

I went and had a look at my journal and he was with Cook three years...I forgot that it was his reports.. and to some extent his sponsership that allowed the settlement...I forgot that Gov Phillip sent all the ongoing reports to him! you know more than I do...I haven't looked at them since about 1982...of course they are "The journal ofJoseph Banks in the Endeavour Volumes 1 and 2." Oh I feel guilty that I have forgotten so much.
I just opened up a page which says that Banks proved popular with the Tahitian girls and he bought back a huge collection of their earings. And long black plaits that they used to make wonderful hair styles...(a couple of the blokes ran off with the girls and the gruop took hostages to ensure the return of these runnaways!
I will read up a bit ...Not that easy it is a huge book and the second even bigger! but it is my punishment for being a sausage ha ha ha ...Really interesting stuff ...what times they were ...discovering a whole round world out there instead of falling off the edge as the first explorers thought they would ...well back later with some info on this
Although you might never see me again ...it may take a few weeks to read this again ha ha ha ...maybe in bits and pieces. Funnily enough the first chapter is mostly about the Islands!

studies would lead...

Right...he (Banks), used the Endeavor's travel plans on the first voyage as a sort of "Grand Tour" instead of doing Europe like most of his peers did after school was done. From everything I've read, he was much more inclined to associate on friendly terms with the Tahitians, and other natives than was Cook, so he became indispensible to the Captain. I have read the Journals, but long ago. But living where I do, Cook is very much a part of the folklore in this area of the world, and as you say - what they went through, and the discoveries that they made - wow! The courage it must have taken to just sail off the end of the known world is incredible to me...what an adventure!!

Almost lost an orchid that has just bloomed - and it is my only one of that color! I read them the riot act, and they started taking better care. Most of my plants are on the other side of the yard. But I'm a little worried about the ones outside my fence, cuz that front-loader that is moving all the patio pieces and all the dirt is huge, and just sorta goes where it wants. Chrissy, everything seems to grow so big and lush there. Our rosemary isn't nearly so...what's the right term? Big and blowsy? Ours grows tight and dense. I just planted some sprawling rosemary by the pond to cover the bank. It seems happy.

Please don't stop the historical interludes! I've always liked history, but really got into it when I started doing the family history thing. Talk about ships! When we were in Ireland, we visited an historical park and one of the exhibits was an accurate mock up of the "accommodations" our ancestors had when they emigrated. Whoa boy. Then I got to thinking, these were the more recent ancestors - what about those that came on the Mayflower (and even before)? These folk had never stepped on a ship before they decided to make that jump to a new world. I bless them regularly and admire them tremendously.

It is a baby one and the buds are a pretty pink then open to white...with wisteria it needs a bit of age to get into the cycle of flowers first...the big purple one took about 6/7 years before it did that. The purple cast I think was a reflection of the grey clouds bouncing of the pink if you know what I mean.
K ..yes I will keep it coming ...i do get sidetracked when I go outside...can't help it. The word for my rosemary is overgrown ...I need to cut it back so often ...it is exhausting!...luckily I use it all the time and it just throbs with bees ...that helps everything in the garden...because there is a bee shortage world wide...without bees we are in big trouble...a lot of sprays kill bees...and the drought and bushfires too ...so I allow it to bloom before cutting back because it really attracts the bees. Things do seem to leap out of the ground here ...guess that is why it was "settled" as a farming area ...and remains untouched for that reason. The red clay is full of good stuff and if you work with it ...it almost produces
miracles.

my SIL has been working on our genealogy for the last 4 years. Finally decided we are mostly English. with lots of Scotch/Irish in the mix. I always claim with pride that I am a mutt. Guess that is why I get so impatient with all the hyphenated-Americans. Time to drop all that. Whoops about to get political...Sorry, Terry. Thanks,Chrissy. Now, in that what I know about Australia (could put in a thimble) is that it was mostly settled by English. ? Wouldn't it be funny if we could trace and see if we have common ancestry other than Adam and Eve. Oh dear...I am way OT again.

I started that OT, Christy - you're innocent! DH gets a kick out of people saying "I'm half Irish" "I'm German" etc. but I have to remind him it's just shorthand for where our families came from - it sounds silly to go around saying "my ancestry is primarily ScotsIrish, Welsh, and English" in casual conversation. But I also don't go around saying I'm ScotsIrish-Welsh--English American! The "A" comes first, but all those industrious people from other countries put me here and I love them for it. And I love to hear about others' family stories, too. Here's a quote I like, "There is history in all mens' lives." Farmers, miners, builders, politicians (yes, even them!), ministers, on and on and on. I have met people both online and in person who are related to me in Ireland, New Zealand, Australia, Canada and England. The genealogy world can be very like DG - meeting wonderful people all over the world who are helpful and friendly and sometimes become very good friends. Forget the stereotype of people studying "bloodlines" - family history can be very fulfilling. End of rant! :-)

Not a rant. I love the hobby aspect of geneaology and in some ways it is very beneficial for knowing history of DNA. My disgust is that so many peoples use of the hyphen is to denote the very thing they are fighting...descrimination. It just is of no help. The majority of our country's population was born in the USA...therefore, are American. PERIOD.

That is my rant. End.

Did you ever see a show on tracing DNA of a bunch of young students? and other nationalities?...if you had... you would agree that we are all a big jigsaw puzzle going back centuries the DNA revealed that...American Indians have strong Japanese roots in the mix...a red headed blue eyed young woman...who was traced to African roots generations back...one young African american traced back to English Aristocratic lines from hundreds of years back.
...it was truly amazing! in my opinion we are all one!...the family of man. Like the seeds scattered over the Earth!...I think we feel the need to say we are this or that... because so long ago we were wanderers and called no place home.So in a way I think our only reference to who we are in modern times is our birth place (our address)...and "adoption"...ie even though my relly's are referred to as Italian ...because of their birthplace...they are true Australians in every sense of the word...because there is another way to be an Australian or an American...or a Calathumpian... and I think of it as adoption...in a way when someone chooses your Country ...the love is perhaps stronger than the one who is born to the place and may not truly appreciate the gifts their birthplace affords...while the love is always there for the Birth country...the adopted one is embraced with gratitude and love for the many reasons that it was chosen in the first place...when those "adopted" children of the world come into my country and love it ...work hard in it ...helped to build it...respect it...then to me they are just the same as me...my fellow citizens. History is important and we need to know about it...even though tracing various "lines" is very interesting...the adventures ...settlers ...rising to meet challenges ...all of that... very important...way back before it was possible ..and before records were kept...various Countries conquered various Countries...explored ...found other new Lands and settled and fought off others and so it went...today with the new wonders of the DNA we are revealed more than ever to be a family...the family of man.

Yup...the family of Man. I love following the history of these islands though. To me, it is a glorious adventure! That a people the world now describes as lazy and slothful, once upon a time were some of the most adventurous and skilled navigators the world had or maybe even will ever see! These people set out in just canoes (!) and traveled thousands and thousands of miles between islands! Its incredible!

Oh Chrissy, I think that Arthur Phillip was the Captain of the "First Fleet"...don't think (at least I can find no reference) that he ever sailed with Cook, as Banks did. After Cook was killed, it was Banks and Bligh that got the ship home to England, and then Banks went back to the south pacific - with the "First Fleet"and Phillip. However it occured though, it is certainly a lovely rose that bears Bank's name.

Same weather phenomon in Texas this year. Were you to go to the Texas forum and back up to early Spring...all the chatter is about what is growing and what is not and nothing is normal. Love the roof and the gingerbread on you home. "Thornbirds" was most likely anything but authentic...but I loved the book. The TV series as always took license with the story but the scenes were beautiful...again probably in a Hollywood sound stage.

The Thorne birds was shot at a real ranch here...most of what you saw was Authentic...the scenery I mean...I did not like what the series did to the book...can't stand...Kildare too feminine for the job...Rachael Ward stayed on here to marry our Bryan Browne ...you know that cane cutting hubby of hers in the show...he portrayed a typical oz bloke...from that era...oz blokes really do seem to put work and friends before sheila's...sad but true that is why most oz sheilas marry into other cultures and oz blokes marry into other cultures because they don't like oz sheilas nagging about neglect...in the end it all works out ok...I love talking to ozzy blokes ...love them as mates ...but no way I would marry one ...awful are'nt I?

Quite a few movies have been shot in Australia because it is cheaper than the US...many scenes done here in films like Matrix etc...though we have read that more films will be shot in NZ due to the success of many of the recent "important " films. Jaws ...a lot of that was done here ...up QLD way...a lot of beach shots ...and dead shark shots.

Hi everybody...really tired...good tired. Went on a 35 mile flea market alley today...now that was just between 3 little towns. We had to go about 25 miles to get started and there are hundreds of side roads into the country side...everybody was having garage sales...so much fun. Didn't get much, but then, where would I put it? Long time friends went with us and we just had a good time...Chrissy, I did get a momma roo with her baby in the pouch made by Gund and a meerkat made also by Gund...brand new... lady was closing her shop...all of a dollar a piece. Gingerbread is a common name for the pretty trim on your house...just under the roof edge. Most Victorian style homes are known to have gingerbread both inside and out. Don't know where the description developed...been here longer than I have.

Oh my picture taken and driving at the same time!!!!

And might I add on the wrong side of the street!!!!

How does that work when your walking on the street, here you walk facing traffic?

Also looks like Oklahoma,Kansas Nebraska

My granda parents were in the Cherokee Land rush, and lived in a dugout they dug for a few years.
Grandma parents owned a sawmill in Michigan,in the late 1800's and drunking indians burnt it to the ground,so for a new start they came to join the land rush, and Dads parents were run out of Missouri,LOL don't really know why but his dad supposedly rode with Pancho Via during the Mexican Revolution,Don't know if my dad was just pulling my leg,or this was real time,,I was young and would believe all his stories!!!!

Oh Chrissy it is ghastly! Horrid, and completely permeating. It gets in everything and lingers like an unwanted houseguest. Use to have a dog who loved to chase skunks...I swear we had stock in Campbells Tomato Juice Company. Bathed that dog in tomato juice at lease 4 or 5 times a year. And of course, he always wanted to be cuddled after these episodes...yuck! I can't think of anyway to describe the smell, maybe Don can, since his is so "fresh".

That reminds me of a another funny story, couple buddies been fishing and drinking all day,it was dark and they let me out at my house first,I crawled up to the porch swing, finished a couple more beers, fell a sleep, seemed like hours, but was really only a few minutes, and woke to a horrible smell,to find my buddies in the front yard yelling at me to wake up!!!,Ernies car broke down,on there way home, and they thought it was closer to walk back to my house via shortcut along the train tracks, story goes as drunk as they were they decided to play a game who could come closer to the skunk that was walking towards them down the track!!!Guess what they both lost!!!
I took them back to a farm we were working to the cattle trough, went got tomato juice by the gallon can and watch them take a bath, drunk falling all over the place what a sight to see!!!

I guess it was funnier seeing them one on my trunk and the other on the hood of my car driving down the road to the farm, you know they smelled like a skunk for about a week!!!

Hi everyone! Love the pictures Chrissy! Love this chatty thread! I wanted to tell Don about my skunk!
Earlier this summer, my brother spotted a baby skunk laying near my garden shed. It was asleep. He walked up to it, bent down and petted it! Boy, did it wake up and scamper under the shed!! And brother got out of there before momma came out and gave him ' what for'!!
Mike has it on video. If he ever takes the time to send it to me, Don, I will send it to you!
My brother said it had very soft fur!!
I would rather watch them out the window myself...lol! In the winter, they come up to the bird feeders to eat the dropped seed.

We have them often right here in the middle of the city. Years ago we had two schnauzers and they both got *skunked* in the middle of the night...through the pet door they come straight to the bedroom...ooooooooowwwwweeeee. Used tons of tomato products to no avail. Finally took them to the vet and they washed them in something they used to clean the exam rooms. Poor babies...then they not only smelled like a skunk...but a public restroom. Took about 6 weeks or more to finally totally disipate.

My skunk story: Big brother took me with him to the Colorado River (water skiing place for those who don't know). We were sleeping outside on cots with just a sheet tucked under head and toe. All of a sudden, he says to me "DON'T move." I feel something under my cot, moving straight down the whole length of it. Finally, he says to look and there was a whole family of skunks walking away in a line - it was their tails we felt under our cots!

It most definitely depends on what part of Texas one might choose to compare to OZ. Seems that you are able to grow any and everything in Spades. I have a little hanging basket of boug and it hasn't bloomed this entire summer. If you go South...it is like a weed. The more I watch and listen, the more I realize Texas is a microcosm of many climates...as is OZ.

Yes they are in a built up bed of sharp sand and cow poo 50/50...they were burn't off pretty badly in a freeze early june but have roared back full throttle... we are on heavy clay and most of my "tropical stuff" is in built up beds...you will notice "close planting" allows things to shelter other things...the "tin " fence sees that a fair bit of warm comes through ...radiated ...on sunny winter days and stops a lot of the terrible fierce freezing winds.:)

I sure have, as a matter of fact I laugh at tags that say "full sun"! from nursery plants.

I'm lucky enough to have giant oak and pecan trees surrounding the house. It also provides the canopy during the winter that gives the garden a micro climate and a few degrees needed to ward of any freezing.

Here's a pict of something from down under that really took off this year. It is 3 years old, C Cooperi Australian Fern Tree.

I am not looking forward to the bad heat...over here you have to do all the Christmas Shopping and parties and concerts (school) in the 100's +...whew...how cold does it get ?
You garden like me only yours is not as wild...the canopies protecting more tender things...warm micro climates...out the front I get the stone fruit ...but at the back in a sheltered warm situation I grow my tropical (in my imagination anyway) stuff :)

We have a similar temp then and actually got down to a nasty
-5c...one night and this did quite a bit of damage but everythng came back...the banksia should grow in a warm sheltered situation...can't kill them with a bulldozer here...grow wild and unattended in abandoned farms everywhere...have another try :)
The jessamine is an official weed here...but just about everyone has one hidden up the back...I don't feel guilty because I have lived in places where it was a menace but it must not like the cold ...you don't see it anywhere around here... this one was given to me.
Well off to do some gardening...I have enjoyed our chat ..have a lovely day/evening...it is late morning on a lovely sunny day here...weeds need pulling and some planting to do :)

"Night Blooming Jasmine, Night Scented Jessamine, Queen of the Night
Cestrum nocturnum"
While it's just another bush when it's not blooming, it's heaven when it's blooming and looks rather nice too. Here's a pict, I think it would grow well there.

Marcy, Plant Files has the yellow Lady Banks to zone 6a http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/go/53223/, the white to zone 7. That's a lot of zone pushing for you. Also found this note on another site http://www.ph-rose-gardens.com/00108.htm:

Quoted:
The White Lady Banks rose is not cold hardy. It will be affected to somewhat by temperatures below 15 degrees Fahrenheit. In order to thrive, this rose needs a sheltered sunny location.

It will grow satisfactorily under a wide variety of conditions. It is tolerant of poor soils and is unpalatable to deer. The ground around the base should be kept free of competing vegetation by mulching.

Of course, if you have a sheltered spot that doesn't hold the cold below 15 degrees, you could give it a shot.

This is mine blooming this last March. It mostly grows wild in a lot of areas. You might give it a try...only thing we do is fight it to keep it from taking over everything.

Very soft sweet aroma...blooms about the same time as the wisteria...can't be beat with both of them. Another angle.

Yes the moon is the same as yours...tonight I was out doing some twilight potting...with the outside light on ...and I just loved that big full moon...even though it makes me...howl...whoooo...whoooooo
ha ha ha but seriously...how many of you do your gardening after dark...it is something I do a lot on hot (and or busy days)...it's very enjoyable...and the cooler breeze is just lovely...tonight I gardened under the beautiful full moon...and listened to the sirens racing by...(always happens when the moon is full)...the fragrance of the Spring flush and a full moon...ahhhh bewitching :)

Your crazy!!! and a kindred spirit!!
I midnight garden all summer long. As a matter of fact there are times when I garden most of the night. And those who knows how hot it is during the day here in summer know why. But yes...Moonlight gardening is great. Many times during the year I will not know it's a full moon and will wake up in the middle of the night wide eyed...what else is there to do but go outside and enjoy it!

As a matter of fact, I've created all sorts of lights for the garden at night so I can see a wee bit, and enjoy the night show.

Hope you don't mind me posting another picture.
This is my home made greenhouse lit up with small colored flourescent lights..then I made these 11 foot tall lit flowers from some left over rods my friend gave me. they turned out fun!

Gorgeous red sky,hmm is it a sailors warning?????

Moon is the same, and when you flush a toilet the water turns clockwise or counter clockwise?

Rivers flow north or south?

You have a prevailing wind?

Sorry for so many questions, trying to get a feel of what it is like there,I think the term down under, playing with my mind!!!!

Hi stopping for a quick check ...having coffee and a sanger...potato salads done Tick...egg salad done ...tick...salsas and dips done ...tick...10 kilos of my special mushrooms...done whew! tick.
The water runs the opposite to you ...never thought about the rivers...don't they all run out to the sea? ...wherever that is...we had dreadful hot winds yesterday very hot indeed this is what happens here ...in a way it is the most dangerous time of the year because the temp drops suddenly when we get a Southerly Buster from coast!...it gets such extremes and that combined with the winds tends to do a lot of damage tearing and ripping as well as burning new growth!...this is why I have my fenced area to protect as much as I can. I have to go now back to the cooking (200 plus coming from near and far)...love to stay and chat but ...
I will look into the differences twixt here and there and chat about it in a couple of days ...meanwhile next time you flush ..think of ours going the other way ...it seems to be what amuses the American folk the most ...that and the fact our water is down at the bottom of the bowl instead of up high ...how does one avoid a "splashed " bottom? ha ha ha
Try and get back later :)

RJ, your flower lights are absolutely beautiful, what did you make the petals from?

Chrissy, have fun feeding that mob!

It's been very quiet at my house this week as Frank is attending Continuing Education - in Vegas of all places! Funny how the house has kept tidy, no toothpaste in the sink, etc!

Hope everyone has a nice weekend...

I should explain,
The flowers were already made, I actually attached them to the long poles and then put the other lights with them. I'm always putting lights together. LED lights are great for gardens..don't burn out, low voltage and keep their brilliance.

Rj...love night gardens...(stopping for a cuppa at the moment) ...night lights add a whole new experience to our gardens!...but when there is a beautiful new moon don't forget to switch them off for a little while to watch the moon sail across the sky...(all the better glimpsed through palm fronds...)you gotta have a bit of mystery too...ahhh the drama of it all!...imagination runs riot! :)

Having lived on the west coast my whole life, I get very disconcerted on the east coast. North and south get confused and the drop-off is much further out, so the surf sounds very different. Such simple things, but so ingrained that it kind of shakes your reality.

Talk about disconcerted! Try being surrounded by water! K - I also grew up in California, so I was quite used to the water being west...now I am always getting in directional trouble!

Chrissy - have great fun with the visitors and the food - and when you get a chance you might want to think about #3...this is getting on the longish side...but maybe not, I keep forgetting you guys don't have the wait I have with dial-up.
