Hi, while on vacation I came across flowers with seeds ready to gather (places where they tear the plants out at the end of the season). I didn't have anything with me to put them in. I started to take pictures, and realized the little canisters that the film comes in are perfect. I only had 2, so I only picked two heads, but will keep some in the bottom of my purse from now on! Since I already carry a sharpie marker, all I had to do was write on the outside to remind me of the plant. Woo hoo, free seeds!

That's a great idea! Unfortunately I only have a digital camera now and can't use it :( I was just searching for something the right size yesterday to collect the sunflower seeds our finches haven't eaten and ended up using something 10 times the size i needed.

Hica, I'm going to ask at the photo lab next time i'm in there because I use mostly digital, too. I know our school nurse used them for contact lenses when kids had eye problems, and I think that is where she got them, free. Sorry about the sunflower seeds and the giant container, maybe something will show up soon so that you can swap them out.

that's a good idea too! I did have a few small containers from stage 1 baby food that were perfect in past years, but since I haven't used baby food in about a year, they've all disappeared. For now I'll definitely save the next tylenol bottle that gets emptied for my sunflowers. :D

In the craft departments, they sell small zip bags that work well. Just be sure the seeds are dry before storage. For small manila type envelopes try looking at office supply stores. Or make your own:

BTW:, I dry my seeds on top of the the TV. The gentle heat does a good job and since we usually watch TV daily, there is a better chance I won't forget about them. LOL

Now that is a great suggestion...drying the seeds on top of the TV. Would never have thought to do that !

Yeah, but if your TV has rabbit ears, be careful that they don't eat your seeds ;)
