I think it's more likely it's just a bit of uneven weathering and corrosion--if it was a brand new flagpole maybe I'd suspect something else, but if it's been there for a while I think that's more likely. Of course I've never seen what something like that would look like if it had been struck by lightning, so this is really just a guess!

We bought this house 5 months ago the pole has been up 'for many years' and there are lightening rods with heavy ground wires all over the roof and they all come down to the Flag pole so...
It's raining right now so maybe I'll get the pole back up tomorrow.
