| I see several other folks on this forum are fans of thrift-store glass lamp parts. I've had mine out in the garden for years with candles in them, but they always get filled up with junk over the winter, and it's hard to light the candles.
This summer, I told DH I wanted something solar. So he went to Lowe's and got cheap solar light fixtures & modified them so they would fit over the openings of my glass pieces. Now they light up automatically every night!
When they're all lit up, our back yard looks like a landing station for alien spacecraft, but I love it! Here are a few photos: Click the image for an enlarged view.

| Ooooh ... what a great idea! I have a couple of glass globes just turned upside down in potted plants! I had no idea you could buy kits at Lowes for something like that! I gotta check it out. Do you know if they are expensive?
I love that one in your first photo! Really neat. You need to try to take a photo of all of them in your backyard. I bet it looks great at night when they are all lit up!
Any idea of how long the solar thingy's last ... do they take special batteries?
Thanks so much for posting your wonderful idea! |

| Glad you like them!
The solar lights were like $12 for a set of 4 on sale at Lowe's. We got some at WalMart, too. And since it's end of season, now might be a good time to pick up more. The silver ones from Lowes are the second batch, and much nicer than the black ones we got at first.
They're just the "stick in the ground" solar stake pathway lights----for this project we used only the the solar collector, battery, and light bulb parts and tossed the rest. Well, not actually tossed, of course, because who knows what wonderful use we might find for the rest of the pieces?
I tried taking a picture at night, but it didn't come out. Now that I have a good reason to, I'll try again---but it's been cloudy all day today so they won't be lit up (much---not enough for a picture anyway) tonight!
They come with batteries, but they have little solar collectors that get recharged by the sun, and the first ones we did in July are going strong. I imagine when they stop lighting up, you replace the batteries and the solar cells will just keep going.
The color is a little "blue" (not warm gold like candlelight), but I've learned to live with it. Since they're totally maintenance-free, it's a great trade-off!!

| And the big "glass flowers" that DH put on copper "stems" for me-----we're still working on these because they are open bowls to collect rain, leaves, and other messy stuff. But when they're clean and lit up, they're amazing. I have a whole "bed" of them.
I thought about covering them with a circle of clear glass and cutting out a hole in the center for the solar light, but DH suggested just turning them upside down and figuring out a way to hold the solar fixture from inside. When we figure out the solutions to the problems, I'll post it here--or if anyone has any suggestions, post those, too!! Click the image for an enlarged view.

| Hi Sticks,
Malibu, that's it, I was having a hard time remembering the name of
the lights. They are very cheap lights, usually on the bottom shelf of
Lowes, about fifteen lights for twenty bucks. Pretty popular a few
years back, but now they tend to come in metal.
I was just thinking along the lines of what Pigeon mentioned, I could remove
the plastic domes and cover them with glass globes. Too cool, Pigeon!

| I'm not sure of your age, but back in the 70's those Swag (hanging) lamps were all the rage and used these types of chains. I usually buy the chain/hook packages for screwing the hooks into the ceiling or out on my screened pool enclosure to hang plants! |
imapigeon Gilroy (Sunset Z14), CA (Zone 9a)
September 29, 2007 06:02 PM Post #4031468
| Sticks, you're exactly right----we just bought solar light "heads" that were about the size of the openings on the globes. The black ones were actually a bit large, and DH just gut the edges off so they would fit.
For the chains, we just buy smallish brass chain by the foot at the hardware store. (The brass holds up well inthe weather.) To make a hanger for a light or a planter with a rim or whatever I decide I want hung, I just make a circle of chain that fits under the rim, open up one of the links, hook it to itself and then close the link back up. Then I take 3 more lengths of chain and attach those to the circle, and hook them together at the top through one link.
Now, that being said, I forgot DH made something special for the two lights like the one in the first photo. He took some copper tube, bent it into a circle that would fit the top under the rim, and then soldered it together to make an unbroken ring. Then he soldered 3 links from the hanger-chain to the ring, and attached the lengths of chain to the soldered links. He did that on those because they have a narrower mouth, and we weren't able to get the solar head to sit down flat on the rim---in fact, it still doesn't, and I think we're going to have to modify it slightly! |

| OK, here are the black ones, which are Intermatic. They're the first ones we got.
They just have a little LED bulb in the very top (see the little white thing next to the yellow battery?), but it's actually a brighter light than the silver ones. These work great for the smaller round globes.

| Here are the silver ones---no name on them, and I can't remember what brand they were. They might have been Malibu---it was a name I recognized. Finally got DH to out the boxes in the trash yesterday, of course!
The bulb on these is in the same place, but the textured plastic piece in the middle diffuses it and makes it seem "longer" You can see it in my night-time picture of the long globe. The diffuser carries the light further down into the fixture. It's better for the longer glass globes because it lights them up almost all the way to the bottom. The black ones only light them up about halfway down. I took the plastic diffuser off a silver one that I have out in front because I didn't want the light to be as bright right next to where we sit in our chairs, and the black ones have a brighter light.
The silver ones are much better quality than the black ones. I played around with them, and each style has applications where I like it best. Click the image for an enlarged view.

| imapigeon...i am getting the hang of this...(finally)...am i correct in saying that nothing will hold the actual solar thing/housing etc...onto the glass bulb but gravity? and if so/no...do you have winds? i am just trying to envision what will happen when we get a big old west texas wind like we had today? |
imapigeon Gilroy (Sunset Z14), CA (Zone 9a)
September 29, 2007 09:55 PM Post #4032191
| sitcks...Yes, gravity, and the hanging ones are somewhat secured by the 3 chains. The lites are sort of crammed between them, and they haven't blown off yet. The one I have just sitting on a candleholder, not hanging, gets blown off by the weed-blower, so that's probably an indicator. The solar lites ARE pretty lightweight, and we haven't had our big storms yet this year. But the chains have held up for several years, so I think the hanging ones will be OK---especiallly since the solar lites will act as covers and keep the globes from filling up with rainwater. |

Body caulk is some stuff that's kind of like modeling clay, but sticky? The problem with silicone is once you get the pieces together, getting them apart would be a...challenge. And you need to be able to get them apart to change the battery at some point. I'll ask DH what he would suggest---we have a long drive tomorrow, so it will be a good time.

I think the sicilone would work as we use it for alot of things.
My neighbor has alot of solar lights throughout her garden and has tried to get me to get them, but thats too normal(but pretty at night)and I want something like you have done. Something that is not only pretty at night but pleasant to look at in the daylight.
You have a great hubby to help you in your creations. Hats off to him!!!
O.k. just a thought but if some of the globes light up only half way down, could you maybe put a small piece of mirror or foil at the bottom to reflect the light so it would all light up?

Use 3 globs of silicone sealer spaced in a triangle. That should hold them, but be easy to cut when necessary to change the battery.

I just want to share a couple of things. I have a lot of solar lights on our little farm that are 4 -5 years old. Some weren't working, so I was at Walmart fixing to buy some more, and saw the batteries specifically for them. Bought a pack, now all my lights work!
Also, all of mine had little cone shaped reflectors in the bottom. I would think that you could make one out of foil for your beautiful home made ones, if needed.

I think that your idea of using the top part of the solar lights with globes is an excellent idea. I placed one on top of a beveled wine glass last evening and it looked great.
The bottom parts of the solar lights may be used for mini bird feeders-birdbaths. They can be mounted on a fence or a post or on a deck railing as I have done. I have several mounted around my yard and they are always busy. Click the image for an enlarged view.

| Oh Ladies!!! I just had a thought!! We have what is called "Second Chance", it is a store that sells stuff donated to raise money for Habitat for Humanity houses. The stuff is used and there are LOTS and LOTS of mismatched globes and light fixtures!
I have bought a few things from there. We bought a REALLY powerful garbage disposal for $8, new it would have been over $100. I swear, my husband would like to buy one big enough to put a Wooly Mammoth down it without cutting it up. (He's funny that way)

I've got a couple of other old glass lamp-parts stuck out in the yard as "garden decor", including an amber one open at both ends. I'm going to have to put a solar light in that one and see what I get tonight!! Right now it just looks stupid.

| I can't keep from going back and drooling on the screen, looking at your post with all the chandeliers. I talked to my husband about it, he said we could not hang the candelier from the middle like a light because it would need to have all the pots balanced that way, it needs support from all four corners. He wanted a pot hanger, I did not until I got inspired by your post. NOW I can't wait to find something to convert!!! | LOL!! I FEEL that old this morning after a late night watching fireworks in our cul-de-sac. Since the original post, most of the original lights are still chugging along and I love them even more. Last fall, we had the landscaping finished, and the lights are scattered more widely throughout the garden. I've taken out the big "glass flowers" for now. Removed some of them from their copper stems and turned them over so they sit on the low walls we built around all the beds out of broken concrete. They light up the gravel paths really well.
I'd like to get some of the big open fixtures back into the garden on the copper stems. I think I need to cut glass circles with a center hole drilled for the solar bulb to put over the big openings, and then figure out some way to keep them all assembled, but removable for cleaning. Still gedunking that one.
I'm real nitpicky about light color. I found that the "warm white" LED Christmas lights are about the same color, so that's what we put around the edge of the recycled satellite-dish gazebo.
I was at a thrift store with a friend a couple of months ago, and she brought me a big glass lightshade and asked if I was still collecting them. Heck YEAH!! And if one gets broken, the pieces go into my tumbler for faux beach glass. Lots of DG T2T stuff in this garden!

It is a windchime with 3 glass floating balls.. I love it!! Would love to have a whole tree full of them but not at that cost.. So this idea (thanks again :) ) is going to give me the chance to have more floating lights around the property..

| Update.. ☺ Ran to lowes and bought the lights (12 pk on sale for $29.00) had them cut the chain (51 cents a foot) RUSHED home trying to beat the sun going down.. I wanted to see atleast ONE hanging from my tree that night.. I was able to get out all 6 globes that I had bought that day (Sat) for 25 cents each.. YAY... I still have 6 solar panels left so I will be on the lookout for more globes.. and even more solar panels.. I love these things.. OH and the two globes I almost didn't buy turned out to be my favorite lights.. lol.. go figure..
Oh and Lowes did have their amber solar lights on sale... but I wanted the white lights for my globes.. Once I got home I kept thinking about those amber lights and thats when it hit me... HALLOWEEN!!! I could get those orange pumpkins, cut out the eyes, mouth and nose, add the amber (yellow) light to the top and hang it from the trees.. Since my daughters birthday is 2 days before Halloween its a big thing around here. lol.. and I love the idea of having the glowing lights with no elec or cords running to them.. I could even hang them down through the woods down our long driveway and not have to worry about candles catching fire... So gonna have to make another trip to Lowes.. who knows maybe they will mark them down a little more.. :)
Oh and I will take pictures of my globes and post them later today... |

| Nice collection, Dirt! I have one of those faves of yours, too---it's one of my faves as well. My clear crackle, which cast the coolest light, got broken last summer, so I keep looking for another one of those.
If your lights are new, they'll probably get brighter in a few days. When we have a good solar day, mine are still glowing when I get up in the morning. And remember when they start to die off (maybe a year from not?) you can get replacement batteries for them. I get mine at Lowe's. I had to replace batteries on 3 or 4 this spring---but some of the others are still on their original batteries.
Could you post a photo of the wind chime one during the day? I'm trying to wrap my tiny brain around how that might be assembled. I love wind chimes, and it would be fun to make some and combine them with some of my "spare" lights! |

| Thanks Ladies.. :) and Im glad to know they will get a little brighter.. I need to move them so they get direct sunlight.. Right now they are right under the tree limbs, so no direct sunlight..
Here is the windchime.. If the pic is not good enough I can take another one.. I took this one yesterday while taking the other pictures... With the wind chime.. The solar panel is at the top with wires leading down to the glass globes. They have a suction cup on the top to make them water proof and keeps the globe in place. Then threre is the glass tubes. They don't light up.. Its just the glass balls.. The one solar panel lights all three globes.. Oh and the glass balls are made of crackel (sp?) glass too.. :-)
Thanks again for all the kind words.. and YAY my fav is also ya'll's :) lol.. I love that globe it looks like a little lantern..

| I always stock up on glass Christmas ornaments during the season, and use them for garden accents in my planters. In the summer, I get the swirly plastic beach balls in colors that coordinate with my house and cushion colors. They're fun to have "floating" around the yard when the wind blows, or stuck in empty planters like gazing balls. They also make excellent foot-rests, and when some of the air comes out, they're comfy back-supports, too...LOL!

| I put one of the solar light caps on a pretty candleholder that a friend gave me shortly before he passed away back in the mid-90s. It's now in my memorial pond garden that I just made for my best friend. It seemed fitting.
The cap is way bigger than the candleholder, so it kind of looks like a mushroom. I should paint the black cap to further that. :) Click the image for an enlarged view.

| Well, I don't know squat about glasswork, but it looks like maybe it's grouted onto plain glass, because the inside is smooth and the outside is rough like regular mosaic.
I'm so glad I thought to try this with it, I never burn candles, so that pretty candleholder has just sat next to my desk unused for all these years. It's really nice to see it all aglow with light as it should be. I think Johnny would have approved, and I'm sure Ivy would have loved having it included in her memorial garden. :) |

| lindawin58 ~ Very pretty, but like imapigeon I dont understand or see the solar panel??? I bet it would be very pretty all lit up..
Okay I really need to come across a deal on these solar panels.. lol.. I bought another glass globe this past weekend and LOOKY what I tried (to see if it would work/glow enough)
Before I said something about cutting out the eyes and mouths and using the amber lights, with this pumpkin I didn't cut the eyes and mouth and used a white solar light and it glowed GREAT... So now I am on a search for plastic pumpkins, and if I don't find enough before Halloween at least I know they are cheap enough at the dollar store, but would rather get them for dirt cheap right now.. lol..
Anyhow here is the pumpkin.. Cool thing too, is that they already have a handle on them.. YAY.. Just make and hang in the trees.. ♥

| Love this thread sooooo much wanted to give it a bump and... add some stuff too ;D
For those of you who were wondering about how to keep the solar tops on in wind, etc. I found a couple of things that worked for me.
The first one is clear silicone caulk. I figure the lights last QUITE A LONG TIME, so i just caulked on the tops (kinda like glue). If I need to replace the tops (or batteries) the caulk is easy to remove and replace. A tube of $4.00 caulk goes a really long, long way. Be generous with it though, especially on the heavier glass. And also, I think with this one, you need to decide if the opening on the globes is appropriate for this application. I don't think I would want to use this on an opening where the glass is straight up and down. I think angled glass hold better. And these I think I will bring in during the winter. Not sure how the caulk holds up to our winter here.
The second thing I found was some glue tape stuff. Its called "Loctite Power Grab on a Roll". I found it at Wal-Mart for about $5.00. It's double sided super sticky, waterproof, Withstands temps between -40 and 248 degrees. Super strong, I cut it in half for my use. Twice as much that way ;D Great stuff.
The third thing I used was a kinda throw back to some wire wrap jewelry I have made in the past. On the "lip" of the globes, I tightly wrapped several courses of cooper wire around the lip. Fashioned two loops (one on each side) then twisted a wire hanger up from one loop and over to the other. Replaces the chain around the globe and you can bend the wire around the solar panel if you need to. One thing I did think might help in some where the solar piece is bigger than the globe opening would be to notch the solar piece a little bit for the wire or chain to set into. That would help keep the solar thingy in place
I'll try to take some pics tonite when I get home and post them tomorrow.. Thanks for starting this thread!!!! I have another new addiction LOL

November 02, 2009 03:53 PM Post #7234351
| Thanks for the tips! I'm still muddling around with some more cover ideas for my larger glass pieces on stakes so I can leave them out and not have them fill up with water and leaves in the winter. I lost one I really liked because water froze in it last year. I've covered one with an aluminum tray with a hole poked in it for the solar lite. It works, but I have to weight the tray with rocks or it blows off. Lately it's taken a LOT of rocks----we've been getting some high winds. I'd like to use something like an upside-down shallow glass bowl, but it needs a hole in the bottom. I could drill that, but it hasn't made it to the top of my priority list. Maybe since you've jogged my memory, it will now..LOL!
Some of the openings on my hanging globes are a tad too large to be completely covered by the solar lite, so I'm trying to figure something out for those. A bead of silicone caulk might be the perfect thing to close that gap.
The other thing I'm trying to find is inexpensive solar fixtures to cannibalize. Lately around here I only seem to see the pricey ones.
The original lites I put up are, for the most part, still going strong. We replaced batteries in a few this summer, and one that lost its bulb, but they've held up pretty well! |

| Do you have Menards in Gilroy or nearby? I was there this weekend and found a box of 8 w/ amber lights for 19.99 (I think). The are also selling small ones for 2.98 each and a bit larger ones for 3 something each. I bought three of each of those for some smaller opening things I have. The one in this photo had a metal top that DH cut off for me. I replaced it w/ the smallest of the Menards lites I bought. I lined the bottom edge with the silicone (kinda like glueing it) to seal it to the top of this and keep weather out. This started out life as a tea light lantern. | This was a candle cover thingy. It's hard to see in the pic because of the flash reflection but it is clear and purple glass pieces. I used one of the bigger ones that came in the set of eight. Am going to end up taking it apart tho cuz the light is amber and doesn't look nice w/ the purple glass pieces. Oh well... thats what I get for being in a hurry to put it together ;D This is the one I was thinking of notching on the sides so a chain could sit in the notches. I fastened the top on w/ the locktite glues strips. Put it around the edge of the lip on the underside of the solar light and then it fit snuggly into the glass top and now it won't come loose even if the wind really blows. | And this last one was made with the slightly larger than the smallest light, but w/ the top being a bit flared it fit almost perfectly on top of the globe opening. I caulked the seam around the light and then made a twisted wire hanger for it. Thanks pidgeon for sharing this idea ;D I'm totally hooked !!!!!

| Great lights, jewly! Menards is not a store we have here. I'll just have to keep my eyes open at Wally World, Home Depot and Lowe's.
That last one you pictured is similar to one of my favorites, but mine is a flatter shape. It's one of the ones that the opening is just a hair large for the light, and water gets into it. I'm going to run it thru the dishwasher to get it nice and clean, then put a new light on it and caulk it. |

| Check out a web site called http://www.glowinc.com. They have powders, paints and even little glow rocks. A forum with lots of interesting ideas. I've been thinking about using some of their paints with glass totums and concrete items. It occurred to me that they might also work well in place of solar lights. No battteries, etc. They seem to be a very user-friendly site, interested in "alternate" uses of their products (i.e., trash to treasure types).
