| We're looking for a Maytag french door refrigerator, bottom freezer with water and ice on the door. If anyone has one and has any thing to say about it, I would appreciate it. The cheapest I've found it is at a Howard's Appliance store here near us for 1900.00 give or take a few dollars. If you have one, where did you get it, how much did you pay and how do you like it? We're looking at the stainless steel model as our oven is stainless. Right now I have a beige/almond refrigerator and it needs to go!
Thanks in advance. |

| I don't have one but my sister has a bottom freezer one. I don't know the brand. She hates it. She said if it wasn't for the *%@# cost of the thing she would throw it out!
I bought the biggest top freezer model I could find 2 years ago. It only cost me around $500.00. Holds more in the freezer than the tub thing on the bottom freezer.
Enough said!

| I don't like bottom freezers... I've never had one, and I'm glad. I'd rather reach up into the freezer than dig down into it. just my preference. The $1900 sounds about right. I love Maytag appliances. I have a washer, and it's quiet and does a great job. Never minded that it cost more. You get what you pay for.
If you want enough noise to make you think about living next to the race track, or a concert, buy a GE. They are as noisy as any appliance I've ever heard. I've got a GE dishwasher, and I run the thing when I'm not going to be there. |

| I was at Menards, local big box, today. They have on display a new style side by side. A refrigerator on the right, 17.7 Cu ft. a freezer on the left also 17.7 Cu ft. Both could be had for About $1800. They were stainless steel & take up nearly 6 feet together. Very nice looking, though.
Looked huge inside. Lots of bins. Whirlpool makes them.
This is similar. [HYPERLINK@www.wcwood.com] |

| Country, that's what I'd like to have but I don't have 6 feet to put it. My dd has something similar and loves it. If only had I had the space. Thanks for the link.
Len, I'm sure I 've seen fridges with no freezer.
Pepper, I'm really rethinking the bottom freezer too. If I can't bend down to weed, how do I expect to bend down to dig through a freezer!!!!!?!?!?? (Ok, I'm a little lazy right now!)
Home Depot has a GE Adora side by side with a refreshment center as well as ice and water on the doors...the refreshment center is on the refrigerator side...for 1649.00...but Flowrlady above says GE's are noisy, maybe I can plug it in and hear it...we're still looking.
Thanks for the feedback all! |

They have a laundry, utility room behind the kitchen range wall. There is a big chest freezer in there. You can get to that room from either side of the kitchen. |

| I have a bottom freezer and I love it. It holds more than my previous side by side ever held and it holds more than my moms big top freezer. Maytag used to own Amana 3 years back when I bought my appliances. Same thing for a lot less. Whirlpool owns them now I believe. |

| What do you want to call it? The height of the freezer? From top to bottom, on mine, is almost double what my mom has in her big ole top freezer Maytag one. My GE side by side, had water and ice in the door and didn't hold near what this one does. My bottom freezer has the top part that has the ice maker and the bottom under that for more food. I'm impressed with it. Mine is a drawer also, not a door. It's a big expense so I'd suggest just taking your time and looking at the size of the various freezers in each model. My grandma's fridge recently bit the dust and she was insistent on getting a bottom freezer model. She says she can get frozen items better out of it. |

| FWIW, we just bought a kenmore side by side. It's 25.4 cuft and has the icemaker tub in the door (Spacesaver, I think it's called), which is great for having room in the freezer.
LOML picked it out and we love it so far. Ice and water in the door.

| You know what I didn't like about the ice in the door? Mine had a ...don't know what you call it, a lever type thing that moved from cubed ice to crushed ice to water. I like cubed ice and water. Before the warranty was even up, it only gave me crushed ice and water. 3 yrs after getting it fixed, it broke again. My sisters has the button you push for which one you want. The water button no longer works. |

| Have a bottom freezer in the CA house-Kennmore. Looking at it in the showroom, the racks rolled out easily - but once loaded with food is a different story.
All said, you get into the refrig more often than the freezer so it is handier to have the refrig totally up top. Never have cared to have anything dispensed out of the door - cleaner look without it.
I did not like my side-by. The freezer part does not hold anything of any size. However, I do have to please DH once in a while and he thinks he wants one in the IA house. We are replacing all the windows in that house and the next step will be to remodel that kitchen. |

| I love my bottom freezer because it holds big stuff. The fridge part holds big stuff too. I didn't need to go buy a freezer for big stuff. I did that for quantity. I once took a long piece of salmon out of mine and my mom just about fell over. So I put lots of little things and some big things in my freezer. But I will say that over the years, my years, I will become concerned with the weight of the drawer. It's pretty easy right now, but as my wrists act up from all this digging in dirt...it's been a thought. |

| In 2003 I bought a refrigerator for our CA house~Kenmore Elite with a bottom freezer; because everything breaks on me and I am usually in Iowa, I bought the extended warranty - 5 year - if there were problems - my girls could just call good old Sears - a mile away.
In June it quit and Sears has lived up to all the negative reviews on it's service. 6-8 weeks to get parts - two weeks into it they finally informed us that we were covered to rent a refrigerator (read your contract) which we still have not received reimbursement for. They did send a check for $100 for lost food (max $150 per year). My daughter took off from work to be there for the repair and the guy didn't show up - Sears did not bother to let her know he wasn't coming. Two weeks after it was repaired it broke again and we lost all the food again - they told us after the fact that the repairman needed to see it to confirm reimbursement. By the time a call could be made to them, it had turned back on and they said there was nothing to send a serviceman out for as it was working again. The next time it broke, my daughter caught it immediately and moved her very expensive injectable medication into an ice chest to keep it cold ($1200 a month for this stuff). Again the refrigerator turned back on but I insisted on a maintenance visit (you are entitled to one per year-read your contract). Of course he came out and basically did nothing.
By the time I flew out for a visit, my daughter showed me her skin- full of solid red splotches, evidently the medication didn't stay cool enough and was ineffective-she was an itchy miserable mess.
Of course the iron-clad contract doesn't cover any of this - loss of time from work waiting for unreliable people, loss of medication, etc.

| Flew into CA on Wed and made a date with Weegy for yesterday for shopping and lunch.
On leaving the house to meet up with her, I went to the refrigerator to grab some ice - guess what - it had quit again! I will sit next to phone Monday morning in the time window of 8 AM to 12 noon waiting for the repairman. I was informed that he will telephone sometime during the morning to confirm and if I don't answer the phone he will not show up. And again, if for some reason he DOESN'T show, I fly back out Tue morning and then it is left to my children to deal with. The good thing is that if, after he "fixes" it there is another failure - they will give me a new refrigerator but I am not sure it is worth the hassle.
When my Sears dishwasher failed after 3 years - I got "customer no-service" so I bought my new one from Home Depot (better go read that extended warranty contract" -may not be any better.
But I must say that when I bought my Whirlpool range from Sears, it broke immediately and they were good to get out within a couple of days to fix it - very short wait.
All said, I may no longer buy extended warranties - then I am not locked in for who to call for repairs; an independent repairman is better to get right out and not make me sit waiting for 4 hours.
Live and learn . . huh? |

| We have a place called "Meyer & Sons". A local owned appliance store. When I went refrigerator shopping a couple years ago, they had the best deal, plus free delivery. (We are 35 miles from their store.) They even moved our old one to the shop outside. They unboxed & set it up in the house, made sure it was working before they left. Nothing was said about buying an extended warranty. (I believe that is another ploy of big boxes to get more of your money.)
These people have been in business for over 100 years. I'm sure if I had a problem with my fridge, they would be right out!
Now, fast forward to yesterday. Stopped at the home we are building cabinets for, visited with the owners. Subject of appliances came up. After much shopping, they are getting all their appliances from "Meyer & Sons". Same thing, best deal in town.
Another couple we have done much work for, have always dealt with another local appliance store. Same thing there, good prices, delivery included, & after sale service. They bought full set of appliances for their house & 3 flip houses in the past 4 years from this store.
I think big boxes ought to stick with selling undies & jeans!
They don't do justice with plants, either.

| I don't think it's really the same--nobody's out there buying Whirlpool, Maytag, Sears, or KitchenAid so that they can show off the prestigious brand name of their appliances! If you want to show off expensive brand names, you're going to be buying Wolfe, Sub Zero, Viking, etc. Anything else you're buying it either for price or reliability so if you're picking a particular brand it's because of your perception that it's a good value and isn't going to break down all the time. |

| Notice I didn't mention brand names in the post above. These independent dealers have all brands, as do big box stores.
The independents will tell what the differences are from one to another.
Besides, they are all probably made in China!
I buy lots of high quality power tools for my shop. They are all made in China now, too. Even the old standby brands, DeWalt, Steel City, etc.

| Yes, when they die at 4 months of use, that is their lifetime!
We have a Craftsman router, it plugged up with sawdust, so now there is no way to adjust it!
Craftsman jointer, made of such poor quality metal it couldn't even be welded. Good thing we have an old fashioned blacksmith in our town. He made a new part out of real steel.
I once winged a Craftsman tape measure about 50 feet into a garbage can at a Sears store after they told me that one wasn't warrantied.
Now Sears is K-Mart. |

| I had always thought that buying something Craftsman, meant warranty. Not so. Warranty only applies to things like hand held screw drivers, socket wrenches, hammers. It doesn't apply to tape measurer's, any power tools of any sort, shop vacs, etc etc. Bummer too, because if they had the warranty people would buy more from them. They find out about the non warranty and nobody buys the products anymore. Like me, like my dad, like Bernie...
For Christmas one year, my parents, thinking that power tools were included in the Craftsman warranty, bought my husband a cordless drill. Nice drill too. Only problem was it died about a month after warranty. Really sad part is the customer service there is really bad. They couldn't care less about your power tool dying. |

| Well I had a really nice repairman come out from Sears today. He is ordering another "compressor" hope that's the right thingy. He said the one they installed the first time has a history of "freezing up".
So the new one should be installed next week. Now we were already sent a check for $100 for lost food and they will only cover $150 per year. But the serviceman was really nice and said he was going to try to get another $100 for us; so we will see what happens.
After this, if it breaks one more time they have to give us brand new refrigerator. But I don't know if that makes up for the hassle we have been going through since last June. |

| HI Weeg,
Sears came out and fixed the refrig again; so far it is still working; we have 1 more year of extended warranty; so if it breaks down again they will give us a new refrig.
Meanwhile, we will start replacing windows at the lake and that will take all winter. We are all measured, estimated, and ready to start; last decision to make is yes or no to the glass coating made by Cardinal glass.
"The titanium dioxide layer of Neat glass reacts chemically with the sun’s UV rays and causes organic materials that are on the glass to decompose. It works even on cloudy days, as 80% of UV radiation gets through cloud cover. Thus when it rains, the decomposed dirt no longer clings to the glass, easily rinsing away.
And Neat glass is ultra smooth. A thin layer of silicon dioxide makes Neat glass exceptionally smooth and hydrophilic, much smoother than ordinary hydrophobic glass. This allows water to disperse evenly or “sheet off” and evaporate quickly, greatly reducing water spotting."
I have a friend that has this coating and she likes it. It helps a great deal on windows that are hard to reach. |

| TLC, I have heard of that type of glass coating and wondered about it myself. Aren't you using double hung windows, making each window easy to reach? Except of course for picture windows, or stationary windows. |
ecrane3 Dublin, CA (Zone 9a)
November 16, 2007 10:29 AM Post #4199417
| Personally I'd go for the coating unless it's outrageously expensive--even if it doesn't work quite as well as advertised, if it saves you any time/effort on cleaning windows then it would be way worth it to me! Even easy to reach windows are a pain to clean (in my opinion at least!) |

| Consumer Reports says they can't tell the difference in their tests.
They stated that they put two windows up on the roof with greasy stains they had applied and waited for 3 months. They said they didn't see much difference between the two.
What they did NOT say was if they had hit them both with the stream of a water hose to see if one cleaned better than the other.
The other thing that they did not note is it is supposed that since the coating makes the glass more reflective there could be an added thermal advantage.
Guess we'll take the leap and see for ourselves. |
