I only carry a phone if I am expecting an imporant call. I would much rather hear the birds, squirrels, bees, and the wind through the trees. It is very calming to be silent and listen to nature's sounds.

I voted other. It depends on my mood. I turn the radio on loud sometimes, I always take my phone unless school tries to call. but then I like to be quiet with my own thoughts at times also. We have wireless headphones connected to the stereo that can go pretty far then I listen to radio or CDs. Just depends on the mood for me.

Voted like to be alone with my thoughts, but it also depends what type of work I'm doing. I hate to water, I get very bored, so I use my IPOD to listen to music. Same if I'm doing boring yard work like raking. I'm very careful at these times not to sing along if anyone is around. I can't carry a tune, but I always think I can when I can't hear myself. Funny thing is that I don't use it when I weed my garden. That's when I inspect the progress and health of each plant, give them a little talk and encouragement. Do take a phone outside with me if my husband is out, especially if he's on the bike.

Generally, I tune into my plants and "listen" to see what they have to say. Most of the time I'm finding out about what nutrients they need or if a bug is after them, if they are too wet or too dry, and how they like the weather. I lose track of time completely and hours can be like minutes. Then I get to work . . .

Mostly I take nothing. If neighbors are making noise, like leaf blowing, weed whacking, lawn mowing, I use my ipod and listen to my tunes. Same if I'm the one making noise weed whacking, etc. But if all is quiet, I enjoy the sounds of nature. My kitties like to come find me outside and follow me. I chat with them some.

Oh yes, and my camera, duh! I bring my camera lots of times!

I take my iPhone if I'm expecting a call. . . used to listen to audiobooks, but haven't bothered lately because it's so pleasant to listen to Nature's sounds. I may start again now that it's leaf-raking season because that IS boring. I quite often use the camera in my iPhone if something needs to be recorded.
But what I ALWAYS take along is my sidekick, "Lacy," who sniffs out exotic zucchini for me.

When I am in my garden I have no worries. Just the sound of nature ( and the neighbors).
My kids are all grown now, but when they were at home they were not allowed to complain to me about anything when I was in the garden. There's plenty of time for that inside. I am so in my own little world and loving it. After the busy day at work, phones, problem solving, answering questions ect. I just unwind with the plants. I even like pulling weeds.lol

I like to be with nature, listening to the happy sounds of birds chirping, and the squirrels scolding me because I'm so close to the feeders. One is nearer to God in the garden, than any where else on earth. It is there in the garden alone with my thoughts, that I really hear from Him.

I voted other... it depends...

I love to hear the birds singing, birds chirping, birds 'cheeping', birds splashing in one of our two birdbaths, butterflies flying about and the airplanes flying overhead and around the area, so 'nothing' when I'm in the garden.

Sometimes when it's loud with the lawnmovers, weed eaters/trimmers and 'annoying leaf blowers' running, I'll wear my "Work Tunes" (brand name) headset and listen to country music that's on the radio.

When I'm expecting a call from dear hubby that is arriving at the airport (he's an Airline Capt. Pilot), I'll have the cordless phone (that also has the time on it) to listen just for him, so I can pick him up "curbside". We have caller id, so I look for only his cell # before I answer (don't want to be bothered by telemarketers and 'wrong #'s).

Also, like to have my camera with me.

Quoted:

Arias, those are my thoughts/feelings too. ;-)

MarilynBeth, I have that little plaque in my garden...it belonged to my mother and her mother before.

"Be still and know that I am God". The hymn "In The Garden" is so often used for funerals...I prefer to interpret the words for a day to day encounter. Beautiful poem.

I come to the garden alone
While the dew is still on the roses
And the voice I hear, falling on my ear
The Son of God discloses
And He walks with me
And He talks with me
And He tells me I am His own
And the joy we share as we tarry there
None other has ever known.

I live in the middle of not quite urban and not quite suburbia but a mishmash of the two. So ipod with tunes, or audible (most likely), or podcasts are necessary to create my own world. Flowers, dirt and sweat on the outside, someone else's dreams on the inside- it's a good and wondrous combination...and beats studying any day.

I prefer to listen to nothing and most of the time I do, but if the neighbors are playing their %&^$ stereo or t.v. outside, I use my i-Pod and listen to some rowdy Cajun, bluegrass, or hard-core country. Even if I had a cell phone, I wouldn't take it out unless I was expecting a call, which would happen maybe twice a year.

I'm selfish about my time in the garden. It's my time to re-new, inside and outside -to celebrate our earth and it's "Maker".
I don't want interference from some unfeeling, uncaring object!

However, I LOVE interruptions, if it's someone coming to talk about, or inquire about my gardens.

Thank you Lou - that was lovely. I will take it to work tomorrow to share.

BigCityAl - like you I've got the screened porch wired for sound. The CD player is in the house and I load it up before a long day in the garden and I can hear music all over the yard. It provides some measure of safety so that the neighbors won't hear my cussing when I survey what the deer and the voles and the squirrels have done.

On quieter days, I am most content with the sounds of the stream - I especially like the 'plop' of the frogs as they dive for cover at the sound of my approach.

No radio or headphones or iPod or anything else similar although I will turn on the radio when cleaning house or when I'm out in the greenhouse. I bring a box of kleenex (allergies) and the phone outside with me to garden just in case I get hurt. I don't talk on the phone when I'm outside in favor of simply listening to the wind rustling through the leaves, the water, and the sounds of the woodland critters.

Sometimes I let music (classical or house) play out the window a little bit, but NEVER use iPod or anything that closes my ears when Im out in my garden! I live in the suburbs of a small New Zealand city, so the sounds of birds and neighbours are mingled. Gardening at sunrise is the quietest time.
Never purposely take my phone. What I do take outside though is all the seeds, tools, clothes, waterbottle, snacks etc that I might need for the day so I dont have to come inside for ages! I usually garden barefoot, and try to avoid bringing my lovely earth inside .
Lucky for me, my garden is out the back, and not visible from the front door. And I cant hear anyone knocking on my door either! I dont like it when people show up when Im gardening, not even friends. The best gardening happens when Im alone with my plants, no shame in talking to them if nobody can see or hear you!

I used to tell my students, junior high and high school age, that not all of life is set to music. Recorded music that is. We'll listen to XM on the way to the ranch, but once there, we put down the windows and listen to the cattle, birds, insects, or just the world turning. There's an answering machine to take calls, so we are not out of touch with family. I spent nearly forty years teaching and counseling teens, so I really love quiet time.

Quite frequently, I also take (please read: "drag") my DH to show him a new bloom or an insect attack that needs intervention.
And I also take the camera, whenever I buy a new "baby", or a flower is in bloom, or a seed had popped out of the soil, or when...well, almost everytime!

As a working woman I take advantage of the quite solitude of gardening, I love to hear the birds-bee's-breezes & hummers buzzing around, it relaxes me - the last thing I want to hear is a phone especialy after being tied to a phone 9 to 10 hrs a day at work & listening to all the office talk, office machinery - ect , give me a quite garden any day!

I garden without phone, ipod or anything else. The silence and garden noises relax me. I don't miss the other sounds of the world. Neighbors often come to talk to me, which is great for keeping our community going, but frankly, I find the interruption slightly irritating. I like my neighbors and I like to hear what is going on, but I love the aloneness and quiet.

Interestingly, I am not a religious person, but the hymn quoted by LouC often comes to me when I garden. I learned it in my childhood and it often comes back to me in the garden. I find it very comforting, though I am not religious.

Hi GAGirl: Welcome to DG! I wouldn't want to give advice on what would grow in someone else's area but I bet if you post your question over on the Georgia Gardening Forum, someone from your area of South Ga would be able to give you some suggestions for plants that do well in your area!

I try to remember to keep my camera handy; I have portable phones available for emergencies, but try to avoid using them. I've been known to lay them down in odd places and then water them. It does them no good.

I also have a cat who insists on accompanying me whenever I'm working in the garden, studio, wherever. She loves to watch me work, and nearly got accidentally smacked in the head with a hoe recently because she darted into my "zone" to satisfy her curiosity about what I was digging up. If she catches me outside and hasn't been informed ahead of time that I'm leaving the house, she makes it VERY clear that she expects me to give her advance notice. I've gotten into the habit of telling her, too. How pathetic is THAT...LOL???

I crave and relish my time in the garden. It is an escape to be away from the emails, voicemails, family demands (though love my little Shuffle) and the phone! I spend most of my working hours on the phone!
In my gardening I enjoy listening deeply to nature. Gardening is spritual work for me.

I work in downtown Boston and hear city bustle all day long. Except for my daily jaunt through the Boston Public Garden which is an utter joy!!!

In The Garden

I take my phone and set the alarm so I don't stay out all night!
I take my camera & take lots of photos of all the things I like.
I take the dogs along with me for comedy and company,
I take the worries of my day and lose them somewhere on the way!

When I'm indoors (when it's raining) theres housework to be done
so on with music loud and clear to make the chores more fun.
I also turn on music when I'm potting in the shed
It keeps the thoughts of garden chores from turning in my head.

When at night I go to bed and wait for sleep to come
I listen to the sounds of frogs and crickets having fun
And in the early morning hours I wake up feeling glad
As the Kookaburras laugh their laugh and drive the neighbours mad

I agree with Makshi, since I am frequently on my own I would not go out there without my phone. A friend recently had a nasty accident in the garden breaking his leg; he would not have been able to summon help if he had not had his phone with him.
Therefore, I carry my phone. I love to be out there just to listen to the birds... but the phone is a necessity.
I usually also have a camera in my pocket just in case.

"In the Garden" was my grandmother's favorite hymn...My grandmother was the one who always had a cutting garden and took flowers to the church for over 56 years every single Sunday of the year. Dad was killed at age 39 and it was sung at his funeral. Do I need to tell you that hymn is always my request to sing...

the poem continues...

He speaks, and the sound of His voice is so sweet, the birds hush their singing,
And the melody that He gave to me,
Withing my heart is ringing.

I'd stay in the garden with Him,
Though the night around me be falling,
But He bids me go; through the voice of woe,
His voice to me is calling.

And He walks with me,
And He talks with me,
And He tells me I am His own;
And the joy we share as we tarry there,
None other has ever known.

Austin Miles had a vision and quickly wrote this poem and the same night wrote the music.

I have a couple of books called "Then Sings My Soul" Book 1 and Book 2...each book contains 150 of the World's Greatest Hymn Stories...just as you were pointing out that Austn Miles had a vision and wrote this overnight.

Gess, God leads in mysterious ways...at this very moment I am reading the hymns and essays in "Then Sings My Soul". My entire life has been spent with the gospel of these songs. My daughter as the church pianist since age 11 and I used to be a choir soloist. Voice long gone but love of music...never. When I cannot pray...the hymns open my soul. When I am joyous beyond measure...the hymns open my soul. When I need peace...the hymns open my soul. My grandmother sang the shaped notes and I learned harmony from her. I have a blessed life. The garden is icing on the cake. I did not say a carefree life mind you.

I am with WeedWoman ... I am lucky to live and garden among a lot of fragrance...and lots of birds and away from cars and traffic. I relish the quiet time... My favorite is the spring when the 400 coffee trees (gardenia family) and the citrus are blooming and the smells waft into my greenhouse. Even with no critical chores, I will spend hours in the greenhouse...just experiencing.

Hawaii is a land of Gods and Spirits and Menehunes (little spirits), and Goddesses...and they seem real and very much alive alone in the woods. There are stories about all the areas, trees, plants etc. and it is very bad 'luck' to move a rock without promising Pele (the Goddess of Fire=volcanos) that you will take care of it... The land is almost alive.

LouC and WW - I, too, thought it was all Honolulu (which, in fact, has its' wonderful aspects...but too many people). The Big Island of Hawaii has a pop of about 120,000 and some congested areas like Kona where the beaches are white and crowded. On the E. side (Hilo) we are growing...but carefully. It is NOT touristy, nearly everyone is involved in growing something for the mainland and it is very laid back. WELL worth a visit. Kauai is also very rural - Maui is touristy for the most part.

The Hawaiians believe that they are a part of nature/the world...they are all related.

True, eh?
