Connie and I have been busy at it this weekend creating a copper mermaid sculpture. We finished it yesterday and we think she turned out most beautiful.

We've had quite a fun time creating her. We took many photos as we went along. We'd like to share the story of our mermaid's creation with you folks.

As you all know, we’ve created several insects and garden nymphs thus far, but nothing that even comes close to resembling a human. When Cath asked us to create the mermaid, we knew it would be a challenge. For several weeks, we racked our brains trying to think of what to use for her face.

Several months back, while in Hobby Lobby, Connie and I found a product called Sculpey Mold Maker. We’ve used the Sculpey clay to make a few things for our own gardens. The same time we got the mold maker stuff, they had this stuff that I cannot remember the name of but it was some kind of pigment that you add to porous material to color it. We bought a little tiny jar of iridescent green. We were anxious to try out this molding stuff.

I have an oil lamp with a beautiful lady’s face on it. She has beautiful, long flowing hair. The definition in her face was incredible. It was just what we needed!! I took her to Connie’s to see if she thought it might work as a model for molding a face. She loved the lady’s face and said we could sure try it. Unfortunately, she was so busy tinting that she didn’t have the time to work on it then.

Finally, our schedules coordinated so that we had several hours that we could work together. We read the package on the mold maker. In the meantime, Connie and I talked about what to do for a body.

Suddenly, I saw a light bulb go off in Connie’s mind. She said she also has an oil lamp that we could use for her body. She went into the house and returned with a body. The body oil lamp was perfect!!! The head of the lady on my oil lamp was too big for the proportions of the body we were going to use though. So we were back to “square one” for the head.

We went to my house and picked up a couple of “harlequin” dolls that I’d planned to sell in a garage sale. They had porcelain heads and looks to be the right size for the body.

We took them back to Connie’s shop and took one of them apart. Man oh Man did she have a long neck! Connie said we could make it shorter with the dremel tool. So she made her mark where she thought it should be, started up the dremel and began to cut.

We both looked at the molding stuff and Connie said, let’s try and make the mold of the other one.

We already had a variety of granite colored clay to work with. So Connie poured a little bit of the pigment coloring stuff into the clay, once she’d kneaded it. Man what a mess that was (as you saw in the earlier photo). And as she continued to knead the clay, the green just disappeared into it. I’m sure that stuff is good for SOMETHING, but not what WE wanted to use it for.

OK so she put the mold maker stuff around the remaining porcelain face. Not much in the way of definition to it. Nothing at all like the oil lamp lady head that I already had. We were very disappointed in that effort.

Connie said, OK, I guess I’ll have to make it myself from the clay. So she kneaded the clay and made herself a ball to work with. I started digging through the beads looking for something to use for her eyes. In my mind’s eye, I saw the beads that we used on Penelope’s necklace. I remembered their iridescence. Connie and I agreed that they’d work perfectly and look a bit “fishy”.

She didn’t have many features and really looked very much like an alien by the end of the day, so we put the head into a zip loc bag to work on another time, knowing it would stay moist enough to do that.

Connie worked on it some more when I wasn’t there, but was still not satisfied with the features. This isn’t the first time that Connie has molded a head from clay. Many years ago, we worked together, and I remember at Christmas time making some beautiful stand up Father Santa Dolls. They had leather coats, boots with fur trim, pine cone legs. I still have mine and continue to use him. I was really impressed at the time at what a wonderful job Connie had done on their heads.

Last weekend, Connie was working in her yard kneeling on the ground when she turned around, one knee landed on the scissors burried in the grass that she’d used to cut the landscaping fabric. The other side of the scissors went into the side of her other knee. Needless to say, it’s been very difficult for her to walk, much less to kneel on the ground using a torch. So the mermaid had to be put on the back burner until Connie felt well enough to work on it.

Making a man is quite different from making a lady. The feminine features were very hard to make happen. I watched Connie add on the ears and shape them perfectly, define the eyebrows and the eyelashes, add on lips. We had to use our imaginations because the poor head had no hair. Reminded us of a fella we’ve both known for many years. We both saw him several months ago and he wants us to make HIM a sculpture. He’s tall and thin, has a hole in his haircut (he’s bald), has a big smile, and a very narrow face. No matter what Connie did, I kept on seeing Kenny in the head she was molding. She saw it too.

We talked about it and talked about it. What was it that made a lady feminine? She needed more fullness in the cheeks, maybe not quite so pointy of a chin. With each modification, it looked better, although for a while there it looked like Ted Kennedy. ☺ I wish I had thought to take photos of all of the expressions that this head had while she was working on it. I didn’t think of that though until it was too late. :-(

The lips were the problem. They’d be too skinny, or not smiling, or too fat, look monkeyish, look like fat Albert. It was always the lips. I was on my cell phone when I watched her pinch off the whole bottom half of the face. I gasped. She said, That wasn’t “IT”. She rolled up that clay into a ball and then added it back to the upper portion of the head. She used the rounded end of the handle of the carving tool and poked a ¼” hole into the mouth. Then she added the lips. They looked much better. She spent at least 2 hours working on those lips.

I said Connie, we have to quit thinking of this head as a HE and start “thinking” of it as a HER. In no time, the lips were feminine and we were pleased with it.

We talked about what we’d need to add to the head. The clay is such that it needs to be baked to harden and cure properly. Once it’s baked, it’s too late to add anything to it. We knew that there was no way those tiny ear lobes could handle earrings, so we poked a copper wire through her head so I’d be able to add them on and curl them later to keep the earrings on.

At this point we were a bit undecided as to whether she’d actually BE an oil lamp or not. Now was the time to make the decision. So we inserted a copper tube into her head that would open into the bottle body.

We worried about hair. How would we attach the hair to her head. We decided to make her a “skullcap” and we would weld the hair to that. But it would still have to be attached to the head. So into the head went 2 more wires to hold that skullcap on. We wanted some way to attach the head permanently to the neck of the “body” bottle, so we wrapped a copper wire around the neck, made a curl in the wire so we’d be able to attach another wire to it later on. I took the head home and baked it in the oven for 50 minutes on 275F.

We cut wires for her hair. We wanted her to have a full head of hair. We folded them in half and welded them to the cap. We fitted the cap to the head and poked the wires we’d baked into the clay through the cap. Then curled the wires to make little curls on her head.

Time for her lower body and tail. We cut out the tail and body in 2 parts so we could weld them together to hold on to the body bottle. This worked perfectly. Hammered to give it shape. The fit is nice and snug. We attached a copper tube on the back of the body holder to slip over a garden stake of copper.

Connie gave her a professional “perm” so she’d have beautiful ringlets all over her head. She used a tube of copper as a "curling jig". She added mother of pearl tube beads to her hair, while it was being curled.

I forgot to mention something. When making her arms, originally, I used 3 beads for her forearms. Once we started taking photos of what we thought was the finished mermaid, I decided that her arms were just too long. So we removed one of those beads and were much more pleased with the results.

I took this photo to show... She's got hips!!! You can see the 3 beads in this photo.

I especially like the hair.
I really enjoy seeing how you create these masterpieces, its truly amazing how much work goes into them.
You both do such wonderful work!

Hi Cath,

Knowing that you appreciate her makes the time and efforts involved in creating her that much more worthwhile for us both.

I'm so glad that you enjoyed watching her being made. Unless someone sees the whole process, it's hard to grasp just what makes the sculptures we create so unique. The artisans here on Dave's have always inspired us and we enjoy sharing the creations with them.

We talked about how her hair should be "styled". We thought, at first, long and flowing out behind her, or to the side. We talked about how it would be "ropey" as she emerged from the ocean. Neither of those options were really very appealing to our creative side though. Both Connie and I have naturally curly hair, so it was very easy for us to envision her with a head full of curls. The little pin curls that were used to attach the skullcap just added to the fun of the project. Connie's use of the tube jig was ingenious! It really made for more "uniform curls" than just using pliers would have made. Our own mother curls her hair every day (without fail) and we laughed about Connie "curling" the mermaid's hair like Mom's.

There were many times I wanted to get photos of things that were happening, but 4 hands were needed for whatever component we were working on.

I forgot to mention the size of the mermaid in previous posts. The actual sculpture measures approximately 24 inches from tail to hair. The garden stake is another 2 ft. approximate. Overall, the mermaid stands about 3 1/2 ft. when staked in the ground. As a precaution, there is an additional stake under the copper, that has "feet" that are stepped on. We felt that being an oil lamp, she would need much more stability than just being a garden stake.

I have included a small funnel for pouring the oil into the bottle. You'll have to provide the oil though. I'd rather not ship anything that is flammable. Connie and I were thinking that blue oil would be beautiful inside of her body.

We'll appreciate seeing her in her final setting. I'm sure the folks here will enjoy seeing her there also.

One last thing I feel I should mention in her story. At one point, Connie was using the torch to color her body. She always takes her glasses off when she uses the torch. She'd sat her glasses up on the chair she'd been sitting on. As she sat back down to view what she's done, she realized that the frames of her new glasses had broken. Hopefully those frames have not been discontinued and the place she got them at will be able to repair them. As Gilda Radner would say ... It's always something.

Thank you again for providing us with an incredibly challenging opportunity to create this mermaid for you.

Wishing you the very best,
Janet

Janet,
OMG, what challenges! Poor Connie, I was so excited about the mermaid I forgot to ask about her gardening accident (made me grimace when I read about it) and then to break her glasses, that is such a drag!
Thanks again for persevering through all.
The hair story is funny, her hair looks like she is still floating under the water...love it!
I will always treasure her!

I had epoxyed the lens to the top of the frame so I could at least drive and work today so on the way home from the dealership I stopped by the glasses place hoping to find a pair of frames the lenses'd fit into. They had the exact frames! And still I was under warranty! Whew!

Cath, I'm so glad you like her. I told Janet I'd be most proud to have her in my garden and that is how we should feel about out creations. She was so much fun to make. They all are. :)

My knee is nearly back to normal. Mostly an aggravation because I have to crawl into back seats of vehicles to tint and each time I knew there was no getting around the hurt.

Cant wait to see her in your garden. I'd love to see her lit!

Well that's definitely an answered prayer Connie. Thank Heavens they are under warranty.

My oldest daughter Jennifer came by today. She was admiring the mermaid. She was fascinated by how we made her. Asking all kinds of questions. I was tickled to death because she is usually my worst critic. Very rarely do any of the sculptures hang around long enough for anyone local to see them, besides my husband. He loved it!!

She went in to use the restroom and I heard all kinds of grumbling when she came out. She said she'd dropped her cell phone into the toilet! Ugggghhh Water is a cell phone's worst enemy! We took the battery off the phone and used a can of air to try and dry it out. We left the phone apart for several hours. When she got ready to leave, she put it back together. At first, it acted like it wasn't going to work. Then it was able to send and receive calls. The display wasn't working very well, but she can live with that for a while.

As I said before... it's always SOMETHING!

I love this mermaid, she is cool, spooky and weird, just like I imagine a 'real mermaid' would be. Nothing like the Disney ones. You and Connie have made so many pretty things.

Thanks so much Alice for your kind words. We appreciate your coming by to see her. We couldn't have been prouder, had we actually given birth to her. Come to think of it... I suppose we DID give birth to her. HAHAHAHA

Having never seen a "real" mermaid, we had to google a bit for ideas, and Cath had sent us a gorgeous mermaid on a postcard. From that combination, we used our imaginations for what we thought a mermaid might look like.

Each of our sculptures is a one of a kind. That comes from our preference of wanting each piece to be totally unique. The fact that we recycle objects we already have when we create the sculptures ... well, it makes duplication just about impossible. :-) We like it that way. And inevitably, when a piece is finished, one of us will say to the other... Well, there'll never be another one like this.

Many hugs,
Janet

Good question. I'll have to ask Connie about that. Though I have several oil lamps in my yard, I don't burn them, but I know that Connie does in her yard all the time. Surely if she thought there was a possibility of that being a problem, she would have said so. I'll have to ask her if there is something clear we can put on her face to protect her.

I think the smoke will rise. I never have had any soot around the neck or lower on any of my oil lamps bottles. It's got one of those little pyrex thingys that slips inside the copper tube( inserted in her head) that the wick is inside of. The hair's copper so it'll be fine if it gets hot. We made sure any hairs with beads were "styled" back away from where the flame would be.

Well, if you don't hurry, it's gonna be snowing up there and you'll have to wait until spring/summer to get them up. Next time the cable installer passes by your house, flag him down and give him $5 to borrow his ladder. :-) Gosh I can be so resourceful, when I need to be. HAHAHAHA

Victor, I can't believe you have that big house and no big ladder. How do you do your repairs??? Clean out the gutters??? Clean the chimney??? Work on your Solar panels???

WoW Ted!!! He's a beauty! I know we can connect solid brass to the copper. As far as torching it though, that's a question for Connie. I really don't know. Surely she'll pop in here and give us a clue.

He looks to be a good size. I'll have to do some thinking about what to do with him. I would probably (for starters) include him in a Christmas display. When it came time to put away the decorations, I'd definitely want to leave him out. My hubby hunts, so my first thought would be building a big hunting type shadow box and including him in it. Would my hubby appreciate it as much as I would, being the minimalist that he is, it's doubtful.

Slapping forehead. I've seen those things too Connie. Why didn't I think of that? Ted, I didn't know you had a torch too. It is Acetelyne, like ours, or a propane torch? Connie will that make a difference?

Ted, on a whole 'nother note, I've seen some of your hypertufa work. We may be picking your brains on that some day soon. (wriggling eyebrows at Connie) Connie and I have been wanting to get our hands in some of that stuff and make us some cool planters. Any ideas or suggestions you have will be most welcome.

Victor, shame on you for sending your lovely wife up that ladder. I don't have much trouble going UP a ladder. It's the coming back down part that gives me the willies. My equilibrium just doesn't know how to behave when I'm on my way down. And my feet don't want to cooperate either. Sounds to me like you need to rent one of those JLG machines that we saw in front of the White House (store) that was being remodeled today. Those little gizmos would really come in handy for heights! You know what I'm talking about. The thing with the folding mechanism that you can get in and be raised up, like a cherry picker machine, kind of thing.

I've heard of Map gas, but really the torches and all that goes along with them, are Connie's forte'. I know just enough about the whole welding business to get me in trouble. :-) I do know that we buy oxygen and acetylene.

In the past few days, we've talked about getting another tip for the torch so we can cut with it. We've seen really cool designs in tin cans. We were thinking that we could make some cool looking wings for dragonflies, etc. with the cutting tip. There's so much we could do, that we haven't even explored yet. We both love to expand our knowledge as we create things.

We have a couple of guys at the place we buy gases that we can quiz. Connie also has several good friends that are welders that have been invaluable to us for tips and tricks on the welding end. Connie said one of the friends told her that what we need is a (Lordy I hope I get this right) welding mat type table. Something we can actually weld to, instead of using the poor anvil we beat the heckfire out of the copper on (with a sandbag, of course) or her shop floor. As you can see in some of the photos, there are burn spots throughout the floor in the area where we work. It looks tacky for her tinting customers to see that, and I hate that those welding spots show up in our photos, but they are there and there's not much we can do about them (right now). We talked today about going to see our man at the sheet metal place where we get our copper. We're going to see if he can fabricate a table top that can be mounted on top of half of her workbench. There's not enough room in her shop to add another piece of "furniture". The wooden workbench mostly gets used as a catch all for tools and a place to drill stuff, cut copper sheets, etc.

Both of us hate welding on the floor. It's heck getting up afterwards. We look like a couple of old wimmen bent over walking! HAHAHAHA Sometimes things need to be taken outside quickly to be quenched. That's when it's rough! Connie's busy putting away the torch and I'm hobbling to the doorway. It would be wonderful to be able to use the torch at a decent level.

I'm glad you all have been enjoying her so much. We enjoyed telling the story of how she was created. It definitely increases our own appreciation of the finished sculpture.

She's begun her long journey to Mississippi today. She should be arriving there in 3 days. I'm sure she'll take the coastal route, along Interstate 10. She'll probably stop off in Baton Rouge to visit with relatives. :-) I shipped the stake for her separately so that she'd be able to swim part of the way. 8*}

Please let us know when she arrives Cath. I just know she'll love watching over your tropical garden. I packed the box with some plant goodies for you. Most everything is labeled. There is a small funnel in the box loose, so be sure to keep your eyes open for it. It's clear! 8^o

Due to the impending storms Uma's adventures only made it to the back deck for last night, she found a spot she liked under the Bird of Paradise. She was much admired by all, and seemed to enjoy the spotlight! A natural performer.

Not sure I am ready to leave her out in the garden on her own yet, so brought her indoors.
Going to look for a modified land leg, that we can support her indoors, as her fin is a little tippy - or maybe that was the Mer-garita she had upon arrival.

A Mer-man, hmmmm, maybe when she is ready to settle down.

Oh Cath! She looks beautiful under the Bird of Paradise. She looks like she's already having a lot of fun at your place. I love the tiny lights around her. We really appreciate seeing her in her new home. I've already added your photos to our slide show. Thank you so much for sharing them.

Considering the approaching storms, I'm glad you brought her inside. One thing that Connie and I talked about as she was being created was that she wouldn't be "hurricane proof". Heaven forbid another Katrina force hurricane should land in your area. But if it does, you've got plenty of documentation for insurance purposes.

I've seen three-legged tripods that may work as an inside land leg for her.

While we haven't found another body bottle yet, we will continue to search high and low. Yesterday I saw an Aunt Jamima bottle, but that was pretty obvious. HAHAHAHA I went to an estate sale this morning and there were plenty of glass objects, but no "bodies". Some day, when we least expect it, another one will turn up. You can bet your sweet bippy that I'll be putting my hands on it if we ever do see another one. Ya just never know when a body will come in handy. :-)

Janet,
She is a Bird of Paradise kinda girl, (crabs and all) and yes we are having lots of fun with her. She is absolutely gorgeous!! Photo's do not do her justice, you and Connie are just fantastic artisans, I so appreciate the wonderful job you did with her.

I think if she spends any time outside it will be on the deck with the BOP, her size suits these plants, she would be lost in the landscaping.

I picked up a wooden dowel and a circular wooden base, going to see what I can come up with for a "inside" stand. Although she almost balances on the coral, but its a bit heavy for a stand.

I will be on the look out for another glass body for you, (m/f) that was such a great find!

It has been such a great experience having you and Connie create "Uma" for me, from seeing your previous work I knew she would be something special, a Truly "Unique Treasure". She is that and more!
And WOW, the packing material! I am so excited about all the great cutting you sent, I have started them all and keeping my fingers crossed that they survive. Very cool assortment.

Thanks again for everything, its been such fun!

Uma was truly a pleasure for us to create. When we create a sculpture, it's rare for us to see them in their new homes, so it's very special to us both to see her being enjoyed and appreciated. You do have a most excellent eye for decorating with her. Thanks for sharing your excitement and the photos with us. They'll be a wonderful addition to our slide show and the future website.

I told Connie this morning that I went to 12 garage sales yesterday with a body bottle on the mind. Of course, I didn't find a single one. Then late last night, I thought to myself, it wouldn't HAVE to be a bottle. It could be a brass Aphrodite! Or some other outdoor worthy material. And not only to use to make a mermaid, but for any sculpture that needed a real body.

Cath, that "inside leg" turned out great. I wish we'd thought about that while we were creating her. We could have made something out of copper for her. Is the dowel the same size as the copper stake? Would a piece of copper fit over it, like the garden stake did on that black stake, and still fit up in the stake holder? Let us know some dimensions, length, etc. and we'll cut you a piece to cover the dowel if you'd like. We'll definitely keep that idea in mind if we ever do another one that could go inside as well as out.

Victor, Victor, Victor. Come on now. Be honest. How many TRUE mermaids have you ever seen with your own two eyes? HAHAHAHAHA

Diane, Connie was out at the dealership today and the weather was nasty here most of the day. A cold front moved in this afternoon and it was rather nippy with the sporadic misting. I didn't go by there like I had planned to finish up on the mirrors. I will see what her schedule is like for tomorrow and try to get there early to finish up on the wind mirror.

Janet and Connie,
You gals thought of everything!!! She was meant to be outside, but is so beautiful and detailed that it is fun to enjoy her indoors as well. I think I might paint her land leg copper as it fits perfect right now, but good suggestion on the copper cover.
With all this rain, it is nice to enjoy her inside!

Victor, Now why does a previous life not surprise me, with you? A salty sea dog you say?

J & C, Looking forward to seeing your next creation!

Good for you! I found a program at Office Depot called WebPage Designer Gold that I've been using to put my site together with. So far, I really like it. I practically had to relearn it though today because I hadn't worked on it since January. I had quite a few new sculptures to add to what I'd already done back then. It came back to me quickly though and once I got going, I really went to town! HAHAHA

Someone told me that I need to make two web sites. One for broadband and one for dialup and have a place to choose on the home page of the site, right from the git go. Right now, the broadband one is just about done. I'll put smaller photos on the one for dial up but still have the same info about the sculptures.

And I'm starting a website dedicated to topless mermaids! Thank you ladies for your inspiration - couldn't have done it without you. I will even sell some things like mermaid knockers for that nautical door theme. I'll think of more.

Unique. I don't htink you need to make two completely seperate website. Depending on how much room you have on the original you can can have the dialup link on the main page go to pages on the same site that are set up for dialup.

The creation of this sculpture can be seen in slide show form at this link. http://uniquetreasures.phanfare.com/album/476765#imageID=310...

I've removed the "chatting" and set the photos to music. I hope you'll enjoy the show.

I edited the first post of this thread, but thought I'd also post this here because I cannot remember if I ever did post the link or not to the slide show.

Janet and Connie,
That is just Aaaawwwsome! Love the music, Pink Floyd?...very good pick!

Uma is still my star mermaid (probably always will be!) she holds court just off the kitchen where everyone can admire her!! - She may make some garden appearances for outdoor partys in the spring/summer, she is just too beautiful to leave her outdoors all the time.

Thanks so much for sharing your wonderful talents!
Cheers
Cath

Yes, it's Pink Floyd. After all of these years, Hillary finally showed me how to download some music. It was too easy! HAHAHAHA This particular song has always been one of my favorites. Those gals sure do know how to get the most of their voices! :-)

I'm so glad that you are enjoying Uma. She was so much fun to create.
