My friends are giving me a 1970's model Vermont Castings Vigilant Coal/Multiuse cast iron stove, which I plan to use to burn hardwood to heat my small home. I am concerned about emissions, and would like to make it burn cleaner. (I understand that coal stoves do not burn wood as cleanly as other stoves.) I asked a dealer if there is any way I can retrofit a catalytic combuster to this stove, or make emissions improvements in any other way. She said there is no way. However, being aware that the "official" answer is not always the only way, I thought I would put this question out to those who may have knowledge/experience in this area. Will it be so dirty that I just shouldn't use it? I am concerned about the environment, and also on a small budget, so the savings from burning wood would be great for me. Thank you for your help.
