Hi there...we are in the process of re-doing our kitchen. We built the house 12 years ago, and are replacing formica with granite, and painting cabinets a cream color. My question is..I need to replace the cooktop and dishwasher, but can wait a bit on the fridge, and microwave is new. All are black, and it would be much cheaper to just replace what is necessary, and stay with black. Will black be OK with light painted cabinets? I like stainless, but really don't want to spend so much money on appliances right now. Suggestions?

We love our black. Both of us have worked in commercial kitchens - stainless does require some maintenance - lemon oil makes them look great -- until the next splatter or hand print with flour, oil, blood, etc.

About once a year - we break out the steam cleaner and spnd a couple of hours removing all the accumulated gunk that remains. And, we do wipe and clean after cooking every time. We have a grated grill and downdraft in the rangetop. It requires a bit more cleaning with each use, but a soak for an hour loosens enough that the dishwasher finishes the job on the grates and iron bottom plates.

Thanks, your advice was very helpful..I may be sticking with black after all. Were you talking about maintaining the stainless yearly, or your black? I can't help but think that stainless is a trend, at least in the residential setting..what do you think?

It's a phase / trend/ etc.

The old line - "Everything old is new again" - keeps playing through my head.

I'm old enough to remember ice boxes and ice delivery. The everything was white for ages - finally color arrived, but what colors - pink, avocado, coppertone, etc. We were really MOD at the time. Then glass, chrome, black, and stainless. Any bets that "white" will be the next "hip" color?

We have a couple of white's left - the refigerator (1979) and the microwave ( inherited when Mom died).

We once wanted crimson appliances and white slate for countertops - had a chance to live in a house with those countertops - never again - every crevice collects dirt and grime.

Now, we are quite content with either black or white. And we have yet to have a need for a TV in the refigerator - lol.
