Thought it would be fun to post photos here of the deer kills this season. Steve will be hunting on a smaller scale this year following 2 back surgeries, but will be out there none the less, in a ground blind rather than up in a tree.
Let's post away!

Made DH a bit envious as he had surgery in June and can't yet walk out into the woods but was happy for Mike!

Yes, we are meat hunters too.
DH teases me because I will not shoot a doe with fawns present. So, the other evening there was this small doe and her two little fawns eating apples. The set had been in earlier and I had already scoped them out. They came back at dark and were there for a while.
I was ready to go in...what to do.
So I throw an apple at them, they jump and go back to eating. I started making a little racket. (I really don't want to let them know I am there, just want to scare them off)
They still stay.
I take of my release (velcro). That seems to get them, they jump, look around come back. I zipped a couple more times...they are gone. Ok.
So I get my stuff together and zip the windows shut. All of a sudden, what a racket, of blowing, wheezing, white tails glowing in the dark. I could hear them 10 minutes later.
DH laughed, Why didn't you just shoot?
When I retell the story the mama was now the size of a choc lab and the fawns the size of mininture poodles. Good thing, he said, you won't see them ever again. Or any other deer in the county.
Next day...who was the first in the apples. Little mama and her little puppies. Sheesh. Guess I didn't scare them too bad. LOL

LOL, great story, glad you don't shoot those little ones, we don't either. Our reason is it is too much work for so little meat LOL!
Thinking we may have to resort to such measures this year what with Steve's back, I teased him the other day that when he shoots one it better be in the leg and then he will have to coax it onto the jeep or ATV for transport!

I know what you mean. We made the trails in the woods for taking deer out. There are a couple really good hunting places I avoid, because the deer can go deep into the swamp in just a hundred yards. It is really difficult to get them out, without having a hurt back.
We do have some really large does here. I wait for them. Gotta watch though, DH took a giant doe once that was so tough you could hardly eat it.
The little doe, is medium size. But I still won't take a doe with fawns in tow, and probably never will.
We seem to be getting more "dry" does here lately. They are my target.

I'm like cparts--won't shoot mamas with fawns. Hubby's the same way--they always have a ticket to walk. We just like to watch them. Also like cparts, we WILL shoot those big nannies who are alone. They are almost always dry and doing nothing but eating up groceries! We haven't gotten to go hunting yet this year but hope we will soon (been too busy taking hubby in for various heart tests). Maybe we can get a shot at something when gun season gets here. In the meantime, it will be fun to see everyone else's pictures.

Saw a huge lone doe last night. She appeared over the ridge at about 75 yds from me and stared at the blind. I knew she could not see me. She smelled the air and blew, stood there looking, repeat, for about 5 minutes. Then slowly went back over the ridge. About 2 minutes later, I heard stomping. Here she was again, same spot, she blew even louder, stood and repeat. Stood for 5 minutes and walked slowly over the ridge.
Now, I have heard her do this in other areas of the woods far from me that I know have no people in them. She is a real stinker this one.
I was singing "If I only had a gun!"

ROFLMBO! You know how it goes with those smart old does cparts. Come gun season she'll be nowhere to be seen! BUT, I was hunting one just like her a few years ago. She kept showing up in the same little bitty food plot. I went in there one night and sat in my ground blind. She never showed but just before dark a 9 point with a 19 1/2 inch inside spread stepped out. Now he lives on my wall. So maybe you will get lucky too--let's hope so! Well Steve broke the cardinal rule, "shoot the first one you see, you may not see another"! Well he was in his blind and 5 doe walked straight toward him, when they were real close they turned, one at a time, sideways and began walking (taunting) across in front of him. He didn't want to shoot a doe and was waiting for a buck, well nuf said, he never saw another those 3 days!

Yes, I think it will be pretty good.

I did not mention, and I think the guy hunters will really get a kick out of this. When I bow hunt, I spend many hours in the blind and it can get a bit boring. So I go to the library and pick up books on CD and take a little CD player out and listen to a book. With the ear buds in, I can still hear deer come in, and I shot the last one, without even shutting off the player. lol

I set up a deer cam, but so far only doe photos. Got a shot of a 4pt. last year, but never saw again.
It is just Steve and I so that deer meat lasts a bit longer, we only ever feed the 2 of us so it goes a long way here. Tim always has a bit left in his freezer in Ohio cause Amy is a vegetarian!
I really like the idea of a tradition to eat that last bit before opening day but not sure we can accomplish it.
Steve wears a hearing aid as he is deaf in one ear and almost deaf in the other. This year he actually bought one of those hearing amplifiers, says it makes things louder, but that includes background noise, we are anxious to see how it works out in the woods. We didn't make it up to the cabin last weekend as we were both not well, so will try it this coming weekend. I'll let you know. I'll told him the story of the music CD and he laughed, he wouldn't hear a thing doing that and has probably missed a few behind him due to his lack of hearing.

Guess hubby and I really like venison, because it is just the two of us, although company will ask for venison at get togethers and in the summer we always cook whole loins over the campfire for company.

No cameras set up. Just watching what is out there during the morning and evening. I average 6 hours a day in the woods for 2 months straight. That is quite a few books on CD. lol

Wow, illegal to shoot the albino, will have to read all about that when I get an opportunity.
I remember when Tim found Snowball, we hadn't seen him for the past 2 trips to the cabin and were wondering, then Tim spotted him in a tree line behind the cabin and he had been torn apart. He came to the cabin and found me and said "I found Snowball", but I knew from his face it wasn't good. Still getting teary eyes talking bout it.
Nuf, we only go to the cabin on weekends what with both working so miss a lot of viewing time. We are fortunate however to have a birds' eye view across from our home and see lots of deer even if that is not where we generally hunt.

Nice buck Tim has there! DH got his doe, then DS BF got a 6pt. buck last Sat. , now my DB and hubby's BF need to fill thier tag. I have at least 4-6 hunter's sitting at my house every Sat. morning. I usually make a big breakfast, then a big pot of chilli, chicken N' dumplings, or venison stew for lunch. This past Sat. was pretty cold, around 28 degree's with 20mph winds. The hot stew was good for warming them up. Today we are having a warm up, it's 51 and won't be needing any stews if this keeps up. It will be sandwich's and ice tea at this rate!

Two beautiful ladies! It's so nice to be able to put a face with your name... finally.

I hope you're feeling much better now.

Yes, feeling much better. Thank you for the kind words.
Went out quading in the fresh snow yesterday. We got 6" with misty rain all day. Fun to break the trails and wander around the woods. The wet cold wasn't too good for me, but it is hard keeping me inside with that fresh snowfall.

Oh, you are so cute in your camo, what a nice way to meet! And you got 6" of snow to play in, none here yet but perhaps a little tomorrow.
I have no doubt you will have a buck in the next shoot.
We are headed up to the cabin this weekend ourselves for the final days and my biggest concern now is if the pipes have frozen this is week? We shall see.

Thanks, I should have turned around and showed off the booty fly! And ck out the "the buck stops here" orange hat, that I knitted for everyone this year. Thought that may help.
It is colder than normal here.
I have been watching the deer movement and we have had almost no movement at all. The food plots are untouched by hoofs. All I see are coyote, fox and bobcat tracks. The preditors are out in force. We heard the coyotes last night howling like crazy.
The season is over, so the only way to get the buck this year is muzzle loader, which I don't do. I can't sit out all morning when it is in the single digits. I went once or twice last year, but didn't see anything.
mmmm, I do have that nice buddy heater, maybe...if I start seeing more action in the woods...

Steve and Tim both love the muzzleloader season. They have the "Davey Crockett" syndrome LOL!
We still have a lot of feed in our feeders that the deer aren't touching. One thought was the acorns were so plentiful this year. I saw a coyote during early muzzleloader season and that one was quite pretty as coyotes go.
Nice blaze orange knitting job, I'll have to consider making a couple for us, but first should knit some wraps for the water pipes!

I didn't shoot this one... but it was taken on my property... does that count? My co-worker Andy shot this one bow hunting mid November.

love all the photos!

Here in my county, you are allowed 6 doe and one buck. Gun season, it rained the first day, and also both weekend days. I am sure that did not help the count. But, they are having an additional 2 or 3 days in mid December for gun season. I don't think they have done that before in my lifetime.

Nice buck. Tim would love to get one of those big ohioan deer. He lives in Aurora and talks of them but he just got a spike+2 with his bow. He would love to take something like that one!

Tim came full circle, got one in muzzleloader, two in bow, a buck opening day of rifle and now on the final day of hunting he finally took one with his pistol.
