| Connie and I began working on a dragonfly for Diane (DiamondD) in Baton Rouge, LA this week and finished it. I’m not sure why, but this dragonfly has been thought of as a HER from the time we began creating it. We'd like to share her creation with you all. Click the image for an enlarged view.

| Diane will mount her on her greenhouse, just above the doorway. The mounting space is limited to 23” so we have to make sure that the finished dragonfly doesn’t exceed this length or width. She will mount on a wooden board inside of the building to support the dragonfly. Click the image for an enlarged view.

| I tried to take photos of the parts that I am describing here, but because it’s hard to help with the welding and take pictures at the same time. The photos will not necessarily be in order of the actual creation.
Day ONE
First we created her head. We had to decide what kind of eyes she would have. We chose 2 big blue solid glass orbs.

| We cut enough wire to wrap around each of the eyes to keep them securely in place. Then we created a head from copper to attach the wires to. We cut an antenna and welded that to the head, along with the eye wires. We welded the bottom and top piece so that she’s smiling. Click the image for an enlarged view.

| Using rigid copper, we cut and welded a piece long enough to be able to attach the head and the tail to. The rigid copper supports the weight of the wings, the tail, and the head. Click the image for an enlarged view.

| These ends are welded and then solid brass bolts are attached to the wings. Silver flux is used to clean the brass so that it can be properly welded to the copper. Solid brass washers and nuts will be used underneath to hold them on the dragonfly. We’ve found that creating the wings this way makes them adjustable (for different looks) and it also makes it so that we don’t have to have a huge box to ship her in. The bigger the box, the more expensive it is to ship. The post office charges a surcharge (sometimes as much as the postage itself) in addition to the actual postage for oversize boxes. | Once the “naked” wings are created, we weld heavy duty wires in patterns. These wires serves several purposes. It helps to strengthen the wings and also gives us something to use as guidelines for beading purposes. For each wire that is cut, we actually make 2 identical wires, shaping them so that both wings will match. Click the image for an enlarged view.

| We attach the tail so that the body is down inside of it. This gives the tail much needed support, yet still allows it to wiggle a bit in the wind. The rigid copper must be heated for a long time before the solder will flow properly to attach to the sheet copper. It looks hideous at this point, but will clean up very nicely. October 20, 2007 02:17 PM Post #4104593
| Thank you Robert. We've been trying to do a better job of taking photos as we work. Something that's helped me a lot is to gather my thoughts together in Word, with photos, before I begin the threads.
The beads have been collected over the past 5 or so years. I began making jewelry back then and really had an obsession with glass and gemstone beads. I love big chunky beads. The lady that taught me to wire wrap had a nice bead shop. Over time, I realized that she wasn't such a nice lady afterall, but that's beside the point. During the course of about a year, each time she'd get a new shipment in, I'd be there drooling with my checkbook in hand. I even went to work for her husband, who ran a tank repair company from the same office buildings, as his bookkeeper for a while, mainly to support my bead habit. So I had pretty much first hand knowledge whenever new shipments of beads would come in.
During a time of unemployment, another bead store was looking for some part time help while they went out of business. They also created necklaces, etc. from their stock. I didn't make too much money because every time I got paid, I bought more beads. They were discounted to 75% off when she finally closed the store.
I watch the thrift stores and garage sales for necklaces, etc. that have nice beads also. Who cares if I really like the style of the necklace? I can always cut it apart and use the beads for something else. I've found sterling silver jewelry for next to nothing as some of the garage sales I've been to. Having bought components to make jewelery I know that those aren't cheap to buy from stores.
I went to an estate sale yesterday and found the prettiest long necklace of long rectangular beads. They look to be jasper of some sort, but I haven't really taken the time yet to make sure of which jasper it is. I showed it to Connie yesterday and told her that they would make beautiful hair. They are kind of a mottledy carmel color and lay flat. There were about 75+ beads on the necklace.
Anyhow, since I began collecting them, I have a huge rolling luggage that has clear boxes (like tackle boxes) full of beads.
When we get ready to make a sculpture, we'll decide on a color (or 3) and go searching through the boxes until we find just what we're looking for. I have a "mental inventory" of what all I've bought over the years, so it usually doesn't take too long to put our hands on what we're looking for.
When I was making jewelry for myself, I had to have something to go with each outfit I was wearing to work. Yeah, yeah, it's a woman thing! HAHAHAHA Since I rarely wear the jewelry any more, I still have many of those sets that are available to use, if necessary.
Here's a photo that includes some of the jewelry I've made. The big focals were purchased from another jewelry store that was going out of business.

| Good eye Connie! I wore the devil out of those earrings and really loved them. People were always commenting on them. They are sterling silver and clean up very nicely. They were showing some tarnish on them when I pulled them from the beading stash though and Connie said that we should leave them that way. They looked much more natural on the mermaid with the tarnish. Being exposed to the air, they'd tarnish anyway.
Sometimes I feel like poor Connie's slaving over there with the torch while I'm lollygagging around with the camera. There are time when 6 hands are needed when she's welding, and it's those times that I try to get photos afterwards. Then I get home with hundreds of photos, edit them, and then spend time putting the thread together. About the time I get done posting the thread, my guilt about Connie slaving is over! HAHAHAHA
I feel I should explain that it's not only for "the thread" that I do the photos, but for the customer that has commissioned us to create the sculpture. I feel it gives them a first hand look at what has actually gone into creating the sculpture just for them. It's something I do enjoy doing, regardless of how many extra hours it takes to get it done.
Spending that little extra time also gives Connie and I references for the next time someone wants something similar made. It may be months between times. I've taken one of my old laptops and set it up in Connie's shop. Many times we refer back to the photos to see how we did this or that.

| Mom gave you a rose bush? How come I didn't get one??? Just kidding, of course. She gave me diamonds that year. HAHAHAHAHA Yeah right!
I really like the variegated leaves on those roses. I can't say that I've ever seen leaves like that on any roses I've ever seen. They must be English Roses. :-)
I had a couple of very small rose bushes this year, but they "petered out" on me very early on. I think they are still alive, but somehow a canna got into the pot they were in and now that it's gotten so huge, I think it sucks all the good stuff from the soil, including all of the water. I kept the roses alive in that same pot all last year and even through the winter. I amazed myself at that. Ohhhh Just had a thought. Maybe I should have changed out the soil. :-/

| Nothing that we haven't been satisfied with, Nap, because it gets redone if that happens. There are things that we will remember that happen to cause a problem in the construction so next time we do it differently. We're learning. Janet does have some wild ideas that she thinks I am capable of. She wants her dragon to breathe fire...8^D So we figure out a way to make that happen...maybe... ;)
Janets got a great eye for the adornment. I do the construction end. We work together very well. There's quite a lot of "...what if..." 's goin' on while it's in the designing stages. Most of the time we both know when something doesn't look right or could look better done a different way. Then there a "...naaaahhhhhhhh" at the same time. LOL
|
UniQueTreasures Beaumont, TX (Zone 8b)
October 21, 2007 11:39 PM Post #4109257
| Thanks Nap. We are too busy having fun to disagree on things.
I can honestly say that we don't ever disagree on the designs. We spend so much time brainstorming before we begin that we both "see" the finished sculpture in our minds. Someone asked me earlier if we sketch the sculptures first. We don't. Sometimes we draw out on paper components that we need to make from copper. Usually it's something that needs to go around something else. The copper is heated up so that it's pliable. Once it's cooled down it is back to it's stiff self. By creating a pattern from paper, we can wrap it around whatever it is, trim it up till it fits good. Then trace the pattern on the copper and know it will work.
Connie has a wonderful sense of perspective. She always has. We both enjoy seeing each component come together. Over the past year, Connie has been doing more of the beading. On this particular dragonfly, we both beaded the wings together, literally. To make them match, she had the tray of beads on her lap and was counting them off the opposite wing while I was wrapping and poking the wire back to her to put on the next bead. (Her eyes are better than mine on those smaller beads.) That kept the wires tight. When I had a wing laying on my lap that little bits of copper are jabbing me in the thighs, I didn't want to have to let go of what I was holding on to just to put the next bead on. We worked back and forth across the wings that way and it worked very well for us.
We'll ooh and aah and work right through lunch or dinner sometimes. Be starving to death and not want to stop. And Woe to the customer that calls and wants their vehicle tinted "right now" while we're in the middle of working. HAHAHAHA
Sometimes, we have the time to work, but the creative juice just isn't flowing. So we'll go shopping. We might find "something" that will work in the next sculpture, or 3 down the road. We just never know when that little doodad might come in handy, whatever it is.
We visit a lot while we work. Because Connie works a lot during the week, we catch up on family gossip. We can ALWAYS find something to talk about. Anyone else listening might laugh and think we're crazy when we mention something we read here on Dave's and refer to some of the crazy usernames that folks come up with. Not that we "gossip" about the folks on Dave's, but we each watch different forums that sometimes have the same folks.
All righty then, I feel like I'm rambling now. The short of it is, that we see eye to eye on just about everything we do. It's wonderful having not only my sister to work, er have fun with, but my best friend too. |

| How very interesting JustmeLisa. We have a camp in Cocodrie and pass that place [other side of the bayou] going and coming and never knew exactly what it was. I might have to stop in a take a look. |

| Since I had so many photos of this creation, I decided to created a slide show, much like the one we did for the dragon yesterday. The slide show has many more photos that what was posted in this thread. Being able to upload only one at a time causes me to be more picky about the photos I post.

| Thanks Zen,
After seeing how well that worked for my dragon this morning, I decided that all of our sculptures will be done this way. I may even try and go back and put together a slide show of Penelope's creation. |

| How is the dragon coming along? The progress so far on the slide show has been amazing to view. You are truly inspiring and although your copper pieces are way beyond my skill level it has started me thinking of finding some medium in which I can express myself... It will come to me one of these days! In the meantime I am enjoying watching your creative processes as you and your sister work together to make these wonderful works of art. |

| G'Morning Zany!
Thank you. We haven't done any more on the dragon. Our Mom is coming for Thanksgiving and will be here tomorrow. We've both been busy cleaning houses and getting ready for Mom to be here. I'm hoping we'll be able to work on it some while Mom is here. She's never seen us working on any of our copper projects. We'll be taking plenty of photos whenever we get back on the project. We might even get Mom to take the photos. She'd love that!
Two years ago, I would never have dreamed that I'd be knee deep in making copper sculptures. We both have such wild and "zany" imaginations. :-) I feel that we compliment each other so well. Using the torch not something I'd ever attempt to do by myself. I know my own limitations. Connie, on the other hand, has got absolutely no fear of using whatever means necessary to get the job done. She has been a wonderful teacher, helping me understand the reasoning behind this decision or that. But even more, she's a lot of fun to work with. We laugh and laugh and have a great time while we are trying to figure out how in the world we'll create the desired effect of whatever we're trying to do.
Art has so many different mediums. The great folks here on Dave's have encouraged us with each of the sculptures we've done. There's a whole lot of knowledge within this site. You just need to figure out what you want to do and jump in with both feet!!!

| G'Mornin' Diane,
We were both typing at the same time. Are you getting any of this rain I'm listening to? We sure have needed it, so don't think that was a complaint.
I added the photos you sent to the slide shows. Thank you again for sharing them with us. They really completed the project.

| No rain to talk about. This morning when I opened the blinds the ground was wet, but call it rain? Nah, just mist my guess. I watered well yesterday, it was nice and warm but overcast. By the way, I've washed the dish towels, want them bacK? |

| HAHAHA I have plenty of them. You can keep them. Use them in your greenhouse if you want. I wracked my brain trying to figure out how to get those mirrors there in one piece. I thought that was a stroke of genius! HAHAHAHA
It did nothing but mist here yesterday too. Last night when I went to bed, I could hear lots of thunder and lightning. The thunder was so bad that I unplugged the laptop. This morning, it's a downpour going on out there. My poor dogs don't want to go out to do their business. Mom and I always laugh because if it's raining it San Antonio, I can just about count on it heading to my house in a couple of hours. If you live close to I-H 10, you'll be seeing it soon.
