| Please pardon the construction area. we will be opening our doors on Tuesday. It is getting a little late, so I need to send the workers home.
Just to let everyone know, I was asked by a Fellow DGer to open a a nice cafe where all the artisans can chat, work and showcase their favorite pieces. I can't hang anything right now, but we should be up and brewing soon. Thanks for your patience and look forward to serving you soon.
Here are a couple of links to the Original Flowerpot Cafe and our new store The FLOWERPOT Cafe II. This may help inspire you to bring in your items. I know it inspired me to give arranging a try.
This is the orginal and number II. Mind now, the first cafe is quite large.

| Traci, this place is looking great! While Terri's away, I thought I'd put some of our art on the walls here. She requested that I do so, so let me look around to see what will go where.
Let me find a screw gun and I'll get to work on putting some sculptures on the wall.
Janet
First off, I think some flowers are needed for the Flowerpot Cafe. So I'll borrow some from Miss Morphetta Nymph.
Edited: Welcome to the cafe. Some folks have thought this is a place for just GARDEN ART. I do believe the idea that this was for "garden art" was my changing the invitations I sent out in the different forums to include whichever forum I was in. I didn't think about folks thinking it would ONLY be garden art when I did that, so I'll go edit the posts so that doesn't happen again. The whole idea behind my invitations was to get traffic here and with hopes that more folks would post their art, regardless of what kind of art it is. There are so many different forms of art. All are beautiful and all have a place in the cafe. :-) Just wanted to clarify that, right up front. :-)
Janet

| Oh, Janet, it is amazing what a little bit of artwork can do for this place. It is already starting to take shape. Thank goodness I found a space with plenty of square footage and lots of nooks and crannies to show off the pieces.
Please feel free to use the design area to work on your latest masterpiece and do try one of our refreshers. I have a wonderful Asian Brug Brew (yes, Terri, I did another one finally), but can't post the pic for the menu as my computer cord is missing. I will attempt to have it up on the board this week.
By the way, you know how much I love the detailing in your bead work. I think is one of the main reasons I love your sculptures. Mrs. Morphetta's bouquet is perfect. And also, how large is the Dragonfly by the back door? I can't tell from the photos.
Off to watch a slideshow and listen to some Floyd. Floyd goes with everything! |

| Hey Traci!!!
This Asian Brug Brew is incredibly good! Light, Tangy, and just a bit sweet. Poured over ice, this is my kind of drink! I feel better already!
The dragonfly is about 22" wide and about 22" long. I'm not gonna go out there in the dark to measure him right now! HAHAHAHA
We love adding the beads to the sculptures. Torching the copper adds some color, but the beads really put pizazz where it's needed. Sometimes it's hard to find beads big enough for the copper wires to go through. We like using strong wire because we know that most of our sculptures will be exposed to the elements. We always keep that in mind. We always use either glass or gemstone beads so they will stay beautiful for many many years.
I know you're a big Floyd fan. I am too. It was hard coming up with just the right tunes for the show. It just so happened that my youngest daughter Hillary had downloaded that song to put on a CD for her wedding. It's one of my very favorites from the Division Bell.
I'm looking forward to hanging out here. It will be nice to be able to toss out ideas with other artists.
I know this will "bee" a great place!!!

| Thanks! We were extremely pleased with the way Penelope turned out. It was a bit scary creating here with "the world" watching over our shoulders. Especially since we were trying to make her move without anyone knowing what we were doing... just in case it didn't work. That was always in the back of our minds. What if we can't pull it off??? When she was finished and we set her up to chase her elusive butterfly, we both breathed a sigh of relief!!! She did exactly as we planned. We sure like to put some wiggle in things now. HAHAHAHA
Speaking of butterfly... Here is the Elusive Butterfly. We just love his little face.

| Hi Zen,
I have a mammogram scheduled for tomorrow morning. We have the Julie Rogers Gift of Life program here where women can get mammograms done free each year. Last year was the first time I took advantage of it. We have no health insurance, and my mother had breast cancer, so this is a blessing for me. Connie and I have our appointments back to back so we'll go get some lunch afterwards.
Hopefully, this dragon will be the beginning of the next project. He's still in the bag at this point waiting on us to determine where we will need wires, etc. to hang on to the rest of him (not completely thought out yet, but plenty of ideas floating around in the brain). Any suggestions are welcome!

I love the series that you created. Having a mother that is a survivor, it really is special to me.
Your totems are awesome! Looks like they've grown a lot since the last time I saw them. Man oh Man Connie and I could make a massive copper structure (surely I can call it a structure instead of a sculpture when it's that big) using those fine beads. :-)
This is the first time I've seen the anemone. It's incredible!!! You've been holding out on us. HAHAHAHA I think I'll put Cath's mermaid UMA next to the anemone so she feels right at home.

| I'd love to have my dragon breathe fire. REALLY love that!!! I found a really nice lighter at Goodwill that has a touch to light mechanism. I haven't been able to get it to work yet, but I know that some day it WILL work. Whether or not we can incorporate it into the head of the dragon so that it will work like I want it to remains to be seen. We have got to get it working first.
I found a really cool glass flower sculpture at one of the thrift stores that has both flowers and leaves made of glass. The wires that are holding them have seen better days, so I cut them all off. I was thinking that they'd make wonderful scales. Figuring out how to attach them to look like a body will be another challenge. We can make the wings from copper. I'd love it if they flapped like a dragon's wings would, so we'll have to figure out how to make them pivot.
We've been brainstorming this dragon for months now. We thought about using a pretty light green wine bottle that Connie has as the body and building off of that. Nice long neck.. .. .. The bottle could be used as an oil lamp .. .. .. oooooooooooooooohhh [sure sign of a brilliant idea forming in my mind] .. .. .. There's my fire!! We could make his head pointing straight up around the neck of the bottle so that his head doesn't get burned when it's lit.

The pieces I usually find are little "pots" that appear to be something created in art classes. Most are on the smaller side with minor flaws and imperfections, usually glazed in beautiful colors. I love them and usually put a cutting of jade in them.

| Thanks for posting the Shaman Stick. I've seen the term used in books before. but can't remember now how it was used. I am glad the photo is as large as it is. More detail shows up that way. It's really cool. What is it used for?
BTW, the Mammogram is done and went well. We'll know results in 2 weeks. They said we could call the local UTMB branch and set up a free pap smear. When we got there, the generator was not working properly on the mobile unit. The mechanic was there from Galveston in no time and things progressed fairly rapidly after that. We enjoyed some coffee with pumpkin bread with cranberries and nuts that the check-in lady's mother had made. It was wonderful. After we left there, we went to a new Chinese place and the food was great. I just think it's wonderful that they offer this much needed service to folks like myself that have no health insurance.

Your green man is really cool. I've seen several variations of the green man here on Dave's. I love them all.

| Sorry, the service has been so slow today. I had many errands to run, so I was unable to check on the staff. I hope everything has been to your liking. I whipped up some banana bread and pumpkin bread, so feel free to grab a piece.
Ah, Maidentheshade, I am so happy you dropped in and provided us with the wonderful rug to admire. Everyone, please make sure to wipe your feet, so it doesn't get soiled. Maiden/Connie, I have never had to pleasure of speaking with you, but have been a friend of Janet's since I joined a few months ago. I have to tell you, I find your works extrodinary and always love the play by play, as it adds so much knowing all the heart that goes into it. Keep up the good work!! I am saving my pennies to get a possible "Teensy" nymph for my garden. For future reference, Teensy, is my DD's nickname and I cannot help but mention her often, so here is a heads up to who I am refering to.
Semper, I love the shaman sticks. I am glad they came out that way, as you can see all the details. I too am going to go research the girdle. Itsn't that sad. Obviously you made the piece for a tragic event which touched you and yet the everyday person, like me, doesn't even know what it is. I like to think I stay on top of events and history. So sad, that I have not heard of this. But, I will remedy this by days end.
Zen, please show us a peak of the next pots when you have the time. The totem is awsome and I would love to have something so striking to display in the front of the cafe'. If you need anything, I will be around, hanging and placing all these wonderful pieces, arranging the lighting to display them at there best, and general clean up of the dishes and such. You artists are a messy bunch. HAHAHA!!
Oh, Zen, one more thing. My Mother is a collector of antiques. She is always collecting more, but never gets rid of anything. She says, she is afraid to sell any of her pieces, as the next person may not love it as much as she does and won't take care of it. But some of her most cherished pieces came from thrift stores and such. I would think myself a lucky person if I found one and your pieces in a thrift store and would snatch it up. I would also offer a silent thank you to the person who donated it, as they obviously don't understand art, and their loss was my gain, to cherish and take care of, just as my mom does. |

| pupil,
I didn't mean to be cryptic. The title of the piece refers to the trials of Hercules, specifically the taking of the Amazon Queen Hippolyte's Belt or Girdle and her death. For me the reference to the current tragedy in the Congo ( the brutal rape of women there ) is historical, poetic, and visual not specific. More a commemoration of the women and their pain and recovery through the power of the belt then literal. There is no way you could know how I was putting the 2 together. I'm not even sure I can say this on DG because it can be political. That is why I was vague. |

| I would think the description of what your art is related to would not be a problem. As artwork is open to interpretation, it is nice to know what the artist who created it was hoping to achieve by doing so. Doesn't all art have some meaning in some way? Either a whimsical one or, like Zen's wonderful piece on breast cancer, a disease affecting women across the world. I am not sure many would have understood her piece, if she had not stated what it represented. It makes the work have meaning and brings us closer to what the artist was trying to convey. I am definitely no expert on art and usually buy pieces that simply draw the eye. But, I am sure that the pieces I have were not created for that sole reason. I am sure there had to be something behind its creation. I just wish I knew what it was. Here you have the opportunity to explain why it was created, which many artists don't have a chance to, except with the circle of friends they have which are not virtual ones. Personally, I love the fact that I now know what you were trying to convey, as I don't have much exposure to the art world, and this allows me a glimpse of it. I would hope that other laymen like myself will drop by and see the progression and thoughts behind it all. |

Thanks for the interest. For further clarification I'll post a more literal piece in the series that uses a NYTimes article as the jumping off point.

| Oh, my!
After receiving a wonderful and warm invitation to join this
wonderful cafe, I've viewed all the work and am famished from
all the art and talent!
As a housewarming (or is that cafe warming) gift, I brought
Halloween cinnamon rolls. Some of you may have visited
Carol's journey thread and noticed the same rolls. No, this is
a different batch. (hee hee!)
What a wonderful thread, great idea!
Sempervirens, I have to say, my computer monitor is setting in
a way that allows a tiny bit of sunshine to reflect on the screen, but
only in one spot. A small amount of sunlight was twinkling on and off
Hippolyte's Girdle. (Post #4140221)
At first I thought your image was actually changing colors because
the light would turn on and off being filtered by the trees, yet it was
only reflecting directly on your image. It is hard to explain what I am
saying other than your image, and only your image, came to life in
the tiny spot of light hitting the computer monitor.
Isn't that neat?
I have since discovered that because the 'window' of light is located
where your image resides, I can simply scroll the screen up and down
to place other images in the 'spotlight' so to speak. You all would not
believe what your artwork looks like in the Hollywood lights provided by
the dappled sunlight.
LOL. Sorry, I know it must sound like I'm having flashbacks from the
late seventies.

| Semp, your drawings are wonderful. I can see so much passion in your work. Thank you for explaining about the girdle. Like Traci, I don't feel that an explanation of the inspiration for your work is the same as political discussion. As Traci said, it's a shame that the laymen (like myself) don't know more about the history of things that affect people world wide. I think we all have a tendency to become ostriches in our own little slice of the world when there's so much happening out there in every corner of the globe. I know I'm guilty of that. It's wonderful that you have taken the time and effort to portray your feelings about such a strong subject in your art. You've done exceptionally well in "bringing home" this cause.
Cheryl, I can't wait to see your beautiful glass bowls and wind chimes here. I so admire the folks who can take a piece of glass that would otherwise be trashed, and make it into something beautiful instead.
I hope others in the glass and T to T forums will stop in and feel welcome.
Most of the other forums have some type of "parking lot" or general place where the members of those forums hang out and visit. This cafe has been needed for a long time.
Thanks Terri for coming up with the idea. And thanks Traci for constructing the place so well. You're an ace carpenter. I don't care what anyone else says about you! HAHAHAHAHA Just kidding sweetie! The lighting in here is awesome and will show off all of the beautiful works of art. Terri did good hiring you for the job. :-)
I'm going to enjoy my coffee while I look around at all of the beautiful art.

I am not trying to embarrass you, but you have been such an inspiration to so many folks with your projects and instructions. You have a way of making it look easy. Of course, looks CAN be deceiving! mmmmmmmmmm cinnamon rolls! yummy! Thanks KM! And speaking of strange effects, Janet and I both noticed on that fanfare site the unique treasures thingy on the pics did some nearly animated looking stuff. Wiggly kinda. And on the pic of her and I standing with Penelope it looks like the blue beaded curtain in the background is moving. Very weird. So we must be having flashbacks too. Far out man! :)
Love the green man sempervirens. Would love to see your work up close. It's hard to tell how large the pieces are from the pics.

BTW, Connie (maidentheshade) is now in charge of the coleus babies. She said she's been watering them. But she didn't say if they've grown any. I didn't tell her that we'll need to see weekly updated photos of them. I thought I'd wait a week to spring that one on her. HAHAHAHA
I saw Connie's rag rug yesterday morning. At that time, it was about the size of a place mat. It's going to be awesome! It's much heavier duty feeling than I would have thought from looking at the photo and from knowing that it was made from sheets. I just don't think I'd want to put something I'd worked so hard on, down on the floor for people to walk on. I'm just guessing here, but I'm hoping also that it will be machine washable.
I've been putting out the word about the cafe in all of the forums that I can think of where artistic folks might hang out. I do hope others will come in and strut their stuff, showing off their creations.

| During the 1100's in viking Norway the most magnificent churches were built and decorated. Not with stolen gold and rich fittings, but with carvings and decorative painting. One of many, and perhaps my favorite of the many is the Urnes Kirke (church) carvings on one of the portals. A friend, a master carver who studied carving at the Hjerleid School in Dovre Norway glued up the wood and drew the pattern for me. The sunroom wall and Darkroom doorway was pretty bland and needed some decoration. Well now it is decorated. Click the image for an enlarged view.

| Wow, I feel lucky to have some DG Superstars show up in our little cafe. Wuvie, I enjoyed your pastries earlier, but will partake in some more, so thank you! Please bring some bowling ball art for the yard. I love these ingenious ideas, even though I can't do them, I can admire. Who would have ever thought a bowling ball would be made into such wonderful pieces. I know I wouldn't have. You have been an inspiration to one of my favorite DGers, LaLa. I can tell you have been an inspiration to many more too.
Denim, please do bring in a lovely tempered bowl. I love those and think it would be a wonderful addition to this cafe. Your art is also one of my favorites to look through. Such talent to be appreciated by the talentless.
As for explainations of the art, I believe it is necessary in order to understand what we are admiring. It is an important part of the process and all should admire the work for what it is, art, not a trigger for debate. Leave that to the outside showings in the real world, not this virtual one. So explainations are fine with me. Even if someone posted something I didn't agree with politically, that is not how I will view it. I will view it for the talent, emotion, and love which goes into it. After all, the Bible is a literary work of art studied in many classes, not as The Bible, but as wonderful writing, parabals, prose and poems. I think we can all appreciate the work without bringing our personal debates into it. So, please continue.
Semp, did you travel to the Congo, or did you draw these from your own imagination? I would love to know. Your sketchs are fatastic and to think, one was a "study sketch". I am like Maiden and would be thrilled to come across these, laughing the whole time at the fool who did not see it for what it really was.
Jada, so glad you found us. I didn't know you were an artisian also. I cannot WAIT to see some of your work. A writer and illustrator, what talent you have, and I envy. Please post some whenever your crazy schedule allows. I have patience with my garden, but not with anything else. lol.
Maiden, did you do all this since the last post? Janet and you will never cease to amaze me. I rarely sleep and still would not be able to fit in all you two do.
I believe Terri will be back when her daylight hours return and her rest is caught up. What a lovely surprise for her when she gets here.
I have set out a decanter of mulled spiced red wine. Please help yourself to a glass, but don't overdo it, as I do not have liablity insurance yet for the place and don't want to shut down because of a frivious law suit. Enjoy, relax, share ideas, ask for feedback and in general laugh!! A cafe always sounds wonderful when it is full of laughter.
Oh, was wondering why everyone was looking at me like I was crazy. DD, DH and I are on our way to a Halloween party, ergo the indian costume. We were going to be Indian Chief, Squaw, and Papoose. DD of 3 years decided she wanted to be a witch instead, so now we are chief, squaw and witch. HaHa.

| Taking a deep breath and standing back to admire your lovely work Robert. I'm so glad you posted that photo. I remember reading about it before and being so impressed at the time. I think speechless was what I was then. I was new to Dave's and when I convinced Connie to join here with me, I couldn't remember where I'd seen it. I just knew that I wanted her to see it. Connie and I both have always appreciated fine art. I think we have some truly incredible artists right here on this site.
Thanks for sharing the gardening books Joyce. I started collecting gardening books several years ago. A couple of months ago, my hubby and I took a trip to Georgia to visit with his Dad. While we were gone, my oldest daughter did a "clean sweep" on me and along with many of my treasures, my bookshelf in my office (with all of the books) disappeared from the house I was so upset that I'd lost all of those books I'd spent years collecting. Many music books from different bands were in there too. When things began coming back to the house for the (as she referred to it) "Come get my crap" garage sale, I was delighted to see those books. I surreptitiously put those books back into my office and put something else on top of them. (Connie if you tell her I did that I'll cut your tongue out!) I love my gardening books and my music books. I don't read them very often, but they are invaluable as reference tools. |

Joyce, your quilt is wonderful. It looks like it was sewn by hand.
My daughter started making quilts last year. She made quite a few of them for Christmas gifts. How in the world she ever got those squares cut out and sewn together with 2 babies running around the house is beyond me. She's really gotten all of the sewing talent and I don't know where it came from. Certainly not from me.
She's been making reversible dresses for her daughter, some of them I've posted on the photo forums and elsewhere. She also has been making something called Scoodies. A combination hood and scarf that is really quite nifty.

She's very cold natured, so these are right up her alley. Of course, if she had a little meat on her 100 pound bones, she might not be so cold all the time. She eats like a horse and never gains any weight. She sure didn't get her metabolism from me. Hubby is the same way. yet, I can just look at food and feel the weight adding to my hips.

| Robert, I was very upset when we got back and so many things were missing from the house. But there were only a few things that I could think of that were actually missing. I am a compulsive shopper. I admit it and know that I don't need half of the things I buy. My hubby has complained about it for many years. Our house was wall to wall "stuff". I was able to go through everything that was taken out and I only kept a few of the things that really meant something to me. There is more space than ever in my house and it's so much easier to clean. So it wasn't all a bad thing. And when I stopped to really think about it... Some day, my kids would have had to go through all of those things and have an estate sale or something. I'm over it now. I know she did it with the best of intentions. |

The first is how the rug is done, where I found out how to begin...and the second is a video where a sweet thoughtful lady shows how the scalloped edge is done (which I am fixin' to do) and it also shows both double crochet and single stitches in the process which was a blessing since it'd been many years since I crocheted.

I've been meaning to ask you if you've heard from Dr. Don lately. He and his wife Pam were heavy on my mind last week with the fires in California. I have said many prayers for the good folks out there who had to battle the fires and the fears.
I've been dropping hints all over Dave's. :-) I know there are probably many artists out there that have never been here to the artisans Forum. As many forums as there are on here, I would imagine most folks are like me with their 10-20 favorite forums. Sometimes, it's time to get outside of the box that we create for ourselves. Art comes in so many forms and I hope that many folks will share their passions with us.
Cactusfan, your teapots are lovely. Now the question is... do you make a good cup of tea? I love hot tea in the winter time. Especially at bath time. Sadly, I never really learned to make good hot tea though, so I just pour a cup of my already sweetened iced tea (I make that 2 gallons at a time because we drink so much of it) and microwave it for a couple of minutes. It's perfectly sweet when it comes out of the microwave. Because it's not over ice, it tastes completely different than when it's iced tea. Thank you so much for coming by. We hope you'll come back often to visit.
Pauline, your tapestry is wonderful. The colors look great on that wall. You can really see the details on the horse and the man.
Connie, thanks for posting the instructions. I was going to call you earlier and then had to go pick up some dressing from hubby downtown. The place he's working on - the Quality Cafe was damaged in the hurricane 2 years ago. It's a landmark here in Beaumont. The family that owns it also has a salad dressing "factory" there and they make incredible Italian dressing. They gave him some today and I needed to get it refrigerated. Anyhow, once that was done, I forgot that I was supposed to remind you to post instructions.
Jolie and I went by the Treasure House and I came out empty handed. It's just not much fun shopping without you Connie! I did see a bowl that was made similar to your rag rug, but the colors were wrong for you, so I left it there. Had they been right, I'd have bought it for you. :-)

| Good evening all. I do hope everyone is enjoying their surroundings. I wanted to design the cafe with comfort in mind and many, many walls and windows to display. It looks like I may be talking to the realtor next door for a possible expansion. Terri, the cafe is doing well and I think you will be pleased when you get back.
Zen, the tapestry is fantastic. The colors are so vivid. I must ask a novice question. You stated this was woven. Did you hand weave this piece? I did not know people even know how to do this.anymore lol.
Balvenie, I am so glad you brought the stained glass in. I have not made it over to this forum yet. Your glass is wonderful and flawless. I love collecting antique stained glass and yours is right up there with the old artisans. Thanks for sharing and please bring anymore in that you would like to display.
Cactusfan, thank goodness you brought the teapots in. I didn't expect business to boom so quickly and have been crazy trying to wash the pots we have to keep up with the clientele. However, they are so pretty, I am almost afraid to use them. I love interesting teapots and this is another thing I have collected over the years. With this being the artisans cafe, I guess it would only be appropriate to serve with art itself, no?
I love exploring DG and have met many wonderful people while doing so. There is no telling where you will find me next. I have not gotten stuck in the box yet, luckily, and hope I never do. There is so much to learn on here and I want to know it all. Call me ambitious.
Wuvie, I understand where you were coming from in your earlier post. But I look at what you guys do on the Trash To Treasure forum and you cannot describe it as anything but art. As the old saying goes, one man's junk is another man's treasure. I am glad some people think it is only junk, or I would not have my treasures!
Just dropping off supplies for tomorrow. Here is some more Halloween candy for everyone to enjoy. I see most of the rest is gone. If I leave this at my house, I will simply eat it all. Enjoy and watch out for the Witching Hour. |

| Terri, Waybigo hugs! It's about time you got here. I was fixin' (Texas word, don'tchaknow) to call out the International Guard! I do hope you like what we've done in your absence. I sent out invitations to every place I could think of hoping the many artists here on Dave's would crawl out of the woodwork. And they have! YEAH!!! You have had an excellent idea and from the bottom of my heart, I thank you! Let the partying begin!!!
Cactus, I do love strawberry pots. Mine are all boring terra cotta clay. Yours is gorgeous! Of course, when I'm finding them for next to nothing at Goodwills and thrift stores, I'm not going to complain about a little boring. I wonder if I could paint mine. (waybigo grin, knowing I don't have a kiln so the paint would stick). It would be worth re-painting them year after year if they'd look half as good as yours.
Cheryl, your bowl reminds me of ice. I love that tempered glass.
Knowing you all are big cobalt fans and also knowing that many of you work with kilns, I feel I should share a story with you. I bought one of those slumped bottles in cobalt blue. I have been using it as a spoon rest next to my stove. (Some of you may have heard this) On the day of Hillary's wedding, I was preparing Spaghetti noodles and had a really big pot on the stove. The fire was blazing trying to get the water to boil. The noodles went into the pot. A few minutes passed and I heard a loud POP and when I went to see what it was, the glass cooktop to my stove had shattered. I stood there watching it and listening to it for a long time. I wanted to sit on the floor and cry! All of these people were expecting to be fed though, so I took a deep breath and carried on with the plan. The glass held together, but my "new to me" stove was ruined! Later that day, my hubby was looking things over to try and determine what has caused it to shatter. That blue glass spoon rest was sitting at an angle close to the edge of the stove. The heat had built up under neath of it and radiated downward, causing the explosion of the glass.
My reason for telling you all this... if you have one of those bottles, don't put it close to your glass cooktop. It cost me $646 to replace the glass top. So the wedding that I'd spent less than $200 on got rather expensive because of a stupid error on my part.
Now, let's talk about something pleasant. |
