Please pardon the construction area. we will be opening our doors on Tuesday. It is getting a little late, so I need to send the workers home.

Just to let everyone know, I was asked by a Fellow DGer to open a a nice cafe where all the artisans can chat, work and showcase their favorite pieces. I can't hang anything right now, but we should be up and brewing soon. Thanks for your patience and look forward to serving you soon.

Here are a couple of links to the Original Flowerpot Cafe and our new store The FLOWERPOT Cafe II. This may help inspire you to bring in your items. I know it inspired me to give arranging a try.

This is the orginal and number II. Mind now, the first cafe is quite large.

Traci, this place is looking great! While Terri's away, I thought I'd put some of our art on the walls here. She requested that I do so, so let me look around to see what will go where.
Let me find a screw gun and I'll get to work on putting some sculptures on the wall.

Janet

First off, I think some flowers are needed for the Flowerpot Cafe. So I'll borrow some from Miss Morphetta Nymph.

Edited: Welcome to the cafe. Some folks have thought this is a place for just GARDEN ART. I do believe the idea that this was for "garden art" was my changing the invitations I sent out in the different forums to include whichever forum I was in. I didn't think about folks thinking it would ONLY be garden art when I did that, so I'll go edit the posts so that doesn't happen again. The whole idea behind my invitations was to get traffic here and with hopes that more folks would post their art, regardless of what kind of art it is. There are so many different forms of art. All are beautiful and all have a place in the cafe. :-) Just wanted to clarify that, right up front. :-)

Janet

Oh, Janet, it is amazing what a little bit of artwork can do for this place. It is already starting to take shape. Thank goodness I found a space with plenty of square footage and lots of nooks and crannies to show off the pieces.

Please feel free to use the design area to work on your latest masterpiece and do try one of our refreshers. I have a wonderful Asian Brug Brew (yes, Terri, I did another one finally), but can't post the pic for the menu as my computer cord is missing. I will attempt to have it up on the board this week.

By the way, you know how much I love the detailing in your bead work. I think is one of the main reasons I love your sculptures. Mrs. Morphetta's bouquet is perfect. And also, how large is the Dragonfly by the back door? I can't tell from the photos.

Off to watch a slideshow and listen to some Floyd. Floyd goes with everything!

Hey Traci!!!

This Asian Brug Brew is incredibly good! Light, Tangy, and just a bit sweet. Poured over ice, this is my kind of drink! I feel better already!

The dragonfly is about 22" wide and about 22" long. I'm not gonna go out there in the dark to measure him right now! HAHAHAHA

We love adding the beads to the sculptures. Torching the copper adds some color, but the beads really put pizazz where it's needed. Sometimes it's hard to find beads big enough for the copper wires to go through. We like using strong wire because we know that most of our sculptures will be exposed to the elements. We always keep that in mind. We always use either glass or gemstone beads so they will stay beautiful for many many years.

I know you're a big Floyd fan. I am too. It was hard coming up with just the right tunes for the show. It just so happened that my youngest daughter Hillary had downloaded that song to put on a CD for her wedding. It's one of my very favorites from the Division Bell.

I'm looking forward to hanging out here. It will be nice to be able to toss out ideas with other artists.

I know this will "bee" a great place!!!

Thanks! We were extremely pleased with the way Penelope turned out. It was a bit scary creating here with "the world" watching over our shoulders. Especially since we were trying to make her move without anyone knowing what we were doing... just in case it didn't work. That was always in the back of our minds. What if we can't pull it off??? When she was finished and we set her up to chase her elusive butterfly, we both breathed a sigh of relief!!! She did exactly as we planned. We sure like to put some wiggle in things now. HAHAHAHA

Speaking of butterfly... Here is the Elusive Butterfly. We just love his little face.

I can see why Penelope needs to be by her hat, and Elusive Butterfly has the cutist little face.

Well since it is still October and breast cancer month, I will add a reminder to us all to take care of ourselves. This is "One in Eight #15". She is from a series I am doing called "One in Eight". One in eight women will have breast cancer some time in there life. So do take care of yourselves.

Hi Zen,

I have a mammogram scheduled for tomorrow morning. We have the Julie Rogers Gift of Life program here where women can get mammograms done free each year. Last year was the first time I took advantage of it. We have no health insurance, and my mother had breast cancer, so this is a blessing for me. Connie and I have our appointments back to back so we'll go get some lunch afterwards.

Hopefully, this dragon will be the beginning of the next project. He's still in the bag at this point waiting on us to determine where we will need wires, etc. to hang on to the rest of him (not completely thought out yet, but plenty of ideas floating around in the brain). Any suggestions are welcome!

Zen, I meant to comment on your sculpture before I was finished with my post and hit send by mistake.

I love the series that you created. Having a mother that is a survivor, it really is special to me.

Your totems are awesome! Looks like they've grown a lot since the last time I saw them. Man oh Man Connie and I could make a massive copper structure (surely I can call it a structure instead of a sculpture when it's that big) using those fine beads. :-)

This is the first time I've seen the anemone. It's incredible!!! You've been holding out on us. HAHAHAHA I think I'll put Cath's mermaid UMA next to the anemone so she feels right at home.

I'd love to have my dragon breathe fire. REALLY love that!!! I found a really nice lighter at Goodwill that has a touch to light mechanism. I haven't been able to get it to work yet, but I know that some day it WILL work. Whether or not we can incorporate it into the head of the dragon so that it will work like I want it to remains to be seen. We have got to get it working first.

I found a really cool glass flower sculpture at one of the thrift stores that has both flowers and leaves made of glass. The wires that are holding them have seen better days, so I cut them all off. I was thinking that they'd make wonderful scales. Figuring out how to attach them to look like a body will be another challenge. We can make the wings from copper. I'd love it if they flapped like a dragon's wings would, so we'll have to figure out how to make them pivot.

We've been brainstorming this dragon for months now. We thought about using a pretty light green wine bottle that Connie has as the body and building off of that. Nice long neck.. .. .. The bottle could be used as an oil lamp .. .. .. oooooooooooooooohhh [sure sign of a brilliant idea forming in my mind] .. .. .. There's my fire!! We could make his head pointing straight up around the neck of the bottle so that his head doesn't get burned when it's lit.

I am glad to see your art and will proudly place this in a place of honor. Keep up the great work and compassion. And as you have done, ALWAYS remind people, as this is something that can occur so quickly!! Truly, thank you.

I must go out for a while, but I am leaving this cafe in the wonderful hands of our assistant. Please see her for any refreshment needs. I will return this evening (after tilling all day) and top off all your drinks. Kick back and make yourself at home. Zen, I will finish looking when I get back.

The pieces I usually find are little "pots" that appear to be something created in art classes. Most are on the smaller side with minor flaws and imperfections, usually glazed in beautiful colors. I love them and usually put a cutting of jade in them.

Thanks for posting the Shaman Stick. I've seen the term used in books before. but can't remember now how it was used. I am glad the photo is as large as it is. More detail shows up that way. It's really cool. What is it used for?

BTW, the Mammogram is done and went well. We'll know results in 2 weeks. They said we could call the local UTMB branch and set up a free pap smear. When we got there, the generator was not working properly on the mobile unit. The mechanic was there from Galveston in no time and things progressed fairly rapidly after that. We enjoyed some coffee with pumpkin bread with cranberries and nuts that the check-in lady's mother had made. It was wonderful. After we left there, we went to a new Chinese place and the food was great. I just think it's wonderful that they offer this much needed service to folks like myself that have no health insurance.

Your green man is really cool. I've seen several variations of the green man here on Dave's. I love them all.

How long have you been sculpting? I've never tried doing anything like that before. It seems like it would take a whole lot of patience to work on something until the desired definition comes to life.

I usually work with paper and mixed media or paint and canvas.

This is a photo of a paper piece, "Hippolyte's Girdle" (front) in response to tragic events in the Congo.

For future reference, Teensy, is my DD's nickname and I cannot help but mention her often, so here is a heads up to who I am refering to.

Semper, I love the shaman sticks. I am glad they came out that way, as you can see all the details. I too am going to go research the girdle. Itsn't that sad. Obviously you made the piece for a tragic event which touched you and yet the everyday person, like me, doesn't even know what it is. I like to think I stay on top of events and history. So sad, that I have not heard of this. But, I will remedy this by days end.

Zen, please show us a peak of the next pots when you have the time. The totem is awsome and I would love to have something so striking to display in the front of the cafe'. If you need anything, I will be around, hanging and placing all these wonderful pieces, arranging the lighting to display them at there best, and general clean up of the dishes and such. You artists are a messy bunch. HAHAHA!!

Oh, Zen, one more thing. My Mother is a collector of antiques. She is always collecting more, but never gets rid of anything. She says, she is afraid to sell any of her pieces, as the next person may not love it as much as she does and won't take care of it. But some of her most cherished pieces came from thrift stores and such. I would think myself a lucky person if I found one and your pieces in a thrift store and would snatch it up. I would also offer a silent thank you to the person who donated it, as they obviously don't understand art, and their loss was my gain, to cherish and take care of, just as my mom does.

pupil,
I didn't mean to be cryptic. The title of the piece refers to the trials of Hercules, specifically the taking of the Amazon Queen Hippolyte's Belt or Girdle and her death. For me the reference to the current tragedy in the Congo ( the brutal rape of women there ) is historical, poetic, and visual not specific. More a commemoration of the women and their pain and recovery through the power of the belt then literal. There is no way you could know how I was putting the 2 together. I'm not even sure I can say this on DG because it can be political. That is why I was vague.

I would think the description of what your art is related to would not be a problem. As artwork is open to interpretation, it is nice to know what the artist who created it was hoping to achieve by doing so. Doesn't all art have some meaning in some way? Either a whimsical one or, like Zen's wonderful piece on breast cancer, a disease affecting women across the world. I am not sure many would have understood her piece, if she had not stated what it represented. It makes the work have meaning and brings us closer to what the artist was trying to convey. I am definitely no expert on art and usually buy pieces that simply draw the eye. But, I am sure that the pieces I have were not created for that sole reason. I am sure there had to be something behind its creation. I just wish I knew what it was. Here you have the opportunity to explain why it was created, which many artists don't have a chance to, except with the circle of friends they have which are not virtual ones. Personally, I love the fact that I now know what you were trying to convey, as I don't have much exposure to the art world, and this allows me a glimpse of it. I would hope that other laymen like myself will drop by and see the progression and thoughts behind it all.

Hi pupil,
Thanks for the interest. For further clarification I'll post a more literal piece in the series that uses a NYTimes article as the jumping off point.
This piece is part of the "Women in War" series.

Oh, my!

After receiving a wonderful and warm invitation to join this
wonderful cafe, I've viewed all the work and am famished from
all the art and talent!

As a housewarming (or is that cafe warming) gift, I brought
Halloween cinnamon rolls. Some of you may have visited
Carol's journey thread and noticed the same rolls. No, this is
a different batch. (hee hee!)

What a wonderful thread, great idea!

Sempervirens, I have to say, my computer monitor is setting in
a way that allows a tiny bit of sunshine to reflect on the screen, but
only in one spot. A small amount of sunlight was twinkling on and off
Hippolyte's Girdle. (Post #4140221)

At first I thought your image was actually changing colors because
the light would turn on and off being filtered by the trees, yet it was
only reflecting directly on your image. It is hard to explain what I am
saying other than your image, and only your image, came to life in
the tiny spot of light hitting the computer monitor.

Isn't that neat?

I have since discovered that because the 'window' of light is located
where your image resides, I can simply scroll the screen up and down
to place other images in the 'spotlight' so to speak. You all would not
believe what your artwork looks like in the Hollywood lights provided by
the dappled sunlight.

LOL. Sorry, I know it must sound like I'm having flashbacks from the
late seventies.

Semp, your drawings are wonderful. I can see so much passion in your work. Thank you for explaining about the girdle. Like Traci, I don't feel that an explanation of the inspiration for your work is the same as political discussion. As Traci said, it's a shame that the laymen (like myself) don't know more about the history of things that affect people world wide. I think we all have a tendency to become ostriches in our own little slice of the world when there's so much happening out there in every corner of the globe. I know I'm guilty of that. It's wonderful that you have taken the time and effort to portray your feelings about such a strong subject in your art. You've done exceptionally well in "bringing home" this cause.

Cheryl, I can't wait to see your beautiful glass bowls and wind chimes here. I so admire the folks who can take a piece of glass that would otherwise be trashed, and make it into something beautiful instead.

I hope others in the glass and T to T forums will stop in and feel welcome.

Most of the other forums have some type of "parking lot" or general place where the members of those forums hang out and visit. This cafe has been needed for a long time.

Thanks Terri for coming up with the idea. And thanks Traci for constructing the place so well. You're an ace carpenter. I don't care what anyone else says about you! HAHAHAHAHA Just kidding sweetie! The lighting in here is awesome and will show off all of the beautiful works of art. Terri did good hiring you for the job. :-)

I'm going to enjoy my coffee while I look around at all of the beautiful art.

Wuvie, thank you so much for your offering of food. I can't wait to see some of your incredible glass projects posted here. I am not trying to embarrass you, but you have been such an inspiration to so many folks with your projects and instructions. You have a way of making it look easy. Of course, looks CAN be deceiving! HAHAHA

Welcome to the cafe everyone and we hope you'll be stopping by often. Hopefully our cafe idea creator Terri will be along shortly with some of her beautiful flower art.

Come on Terri. The holiday is over! Time to come enjoy your cafe with us now. What? Still sleeping??? Oh yeah. I forgot about the time differences. OK, but hurry up and wake up!!!

mmmmmmmmmm cinnamon rolls! yummy! Thanks KM! And speaking of strange effects, Janet and I both noticed on that fanfare site the unique treasures thingy on the pics did some nearly animated looking stuff. Wiggly kinda. And on the pic of her and I standing with Penelope it looks like the blue beaded curtain in the background is moving. Very weird. So we must be having flashbacks too. Far out man! :)

Love the green man sempervirens. Would love to see your work up close. It's hard to tell how large the pieces are from the pics.

OK I'm swapping out that rag rug up there for the updated version and will continue to do so until it's completed. It's a long way all the way around this thing!

Hi Joyce! It's good to see you here. What kind of creations do you make? Inquiring (read nosy there) minds wanna know.

BTW, Connie (maidentheshade) is now in charge of the coleus babies. She said she's been watering them. But she didn't say if they've grown any. I didn't tell her that we'll need to see weekly updated photos of them. I thought I'd wait a week to spring that one on her. HAHAHAHA

I saw Connie's rag rug yesterday morning. At that time, it was about the size of a place mat. It's going to be awesome! It's much heavier duty feeling than I would have thought from looking at the photo and from knowing that it was made from sheets. I just don't think I'd want to put something I'd worked so hard on, down on the floor for people to walk on. I'm just guessing here, but I'm hoping also that it will be machine washable.

I've been putting out the word about the cafe in all of the forums that I can think of where artistic folks might hang out. I do hope others will come in and strut their stuff, showing off their creations.

During the 1100's in viking Norway the most magnificent churches were built and decorated. Not with stolen gold and rich fittings, but with carvings and decorative painting. One of many, and perhaps my favorite of the many is the Urnes Kirke (church) carvings on one of the portals. A friend, a master carver who studied carving at the Hjerleid School in Dovre Norway glued up the wood and drew the pattern for me. The sunroom wall and Darkroom doorway was pretty bland and needed some decoration. Well now it is decorated.

Wow, I feel lucky to have some DG Superstars show up in our little cafe. Wuvie, I enjoyed your pastries earlier, but will partake in some more, so thank you! Please bring some bowling ball art for the yard. I love these ingenious ideas, even though I can't do them, I can admire. Who would have ever thought a bowling ball would be made into such wonderful pieces. I know I wouldn't have. You have been an inspiration to one of my favorite DGers, LaLa. I can tell you have been an inspiration to many more too.

Denim, please do bring in a lovely tempered bowl. I love those and think it would be a wonderful addition to this cafe. Your art is also one of my favorites to look through. Such talent to be appreciated by the talentless.

As for explainations of the art, I believe it is necessary in order to understand what we are admiring. It is an important part of the process and all should admire the work for what it is, art, not a trigger for debate. Leave that to the outside showings in the real world, not this virtual one. So explainations are fine with me. Even if someone posted something I didn't agree with politically, that is not how I will view it. I will view it for the talent, emotion, and love which goes into it. After all, the Bible is a literary work of art studied in many classes, not as The Bible, but as wonderful writing, parabals, prose and poems. I think we can all appreciate the work without bringing our personal debates into it. So, please continue.

Semp, did you travel to the Congo, or did you draw these from your own imagination? I would love to know. Your sketchs are fatastic and to think, one was a "study sketch". I am like Maiden and would be thrilled to come across these, laughing the whole time at the fool who did not see it for what it really was.

Jada, so glad you found us. I didn't know you were an artisian also. I cannot WAIT to see some of your work. A writer and illustrator, what talent you have, and I envy. Please post some whenever your crazy schedule allows. I have patience with my garden, but not with anything else. lol.

Maiden, did you do all this since the last post? Janet and you will never cease to amaze me. I rarely sleep and still would not be able to fit in all you two do.

I believe Terri will be back when her daylight hours return and her rest is caught up. What a lovely surprise for her when she gets here.

I have set out a decanter of mulled spiced red wine. Please help yourself to a glass, but don't overdo it, as I do not have liablity insurance yet for the place and don't want to shut down because of a frivious law suit. Enjoy, relax, share ideas, ask for feedback and in general laugh!! A cafe always sounds wonderful when it is full of laughter.

Oh, was wondering why everyone was looking at me like I was crazy. DD, DH and I are on our way to a Halloween party, ergo the indian costume. We were going to be Indian Chief, Squaw, and Papoose. DD of 3 years decided she wanted to be a witch instead, so now we are chief, squaw and witch. HaHa.

I will show off my art, DD, later. Bye for now.

Taking a deep breath and standing back to admire your lovely work Robert. I'm so glad you posted that photo. I remember reading about it before and being so impressed at the time. I think speechless was what I was then. I was new to Dave's and when I convinced Connie to join here with me, I couldn't remember where I'd seen it. I just knew that I wanted her to see it. Connie and I both have always appreciated fine art. I think we have some truly incredible artists right here on this site.

Thanks for sharing the gardening books Joyce. I started collecting gardening books several years ago. A couple of months ago, my hubby and I took a trip to Georgia to visit with his Dad. While we were gone, my oldest daughter did a "clean sweep" on me and along with many of my treasures, my bookshelf in my office (with all of the books) disappeared from the house I was so upset that I'd lost all of those books I'd spent years collecting. Many music books from different bands were in there too. When things began coming back to the house for the (as she referred to it) "Come get my crap" garage sale, I was delighted to see those books. I surreptitiously put those books back into my office and put something else on top of them. (Connie if you tell her I did that I'll cut your tongue out!) I love my gardening books and my music books. I don't read them very often, but they are invaluable as reference tools.

Joyce, your quilt is wonderful. It looks like it was sewn by hand.

My daughter started making quilts last year. She made quite a few of them for Christmas gifts. How in the world she ever got those squares cut out and sewn together with 2 babies running around the house is beyond me. She's really gotten all of the sewing talent and I don't know where it came from. Certainly not from me.

She's been making reversible dresses for her daughter, some of them I've posted on the photo forums and elsewhere. She also has been making something called Scoodies. A combination hood and scarf that is really quite nifty.

Each of them is made with warm fabric on one side and cool fabric on the other. They are completely reversible, so you can keep your ears warm or cool. :-)

She's very cold natured, so these are right up her alley. Of course, if she had a little meat on her 100 pound bones, she might not be so cold all the time. She eats like a horse and never gains any weight. She sure didn't get her metabolism from me. Hubby is the same way. yet, I can just look at food and feel the weight adding to my hips.

Speaking of reversible, here is one of the dresses she made for Kaylee. Both photos are the same dress.

Wuvie, I felt the same way when GD was working on getting this forum started. What did I have to offer? But ya know what? These folks have welcomed all of the artisans with open arms. As always, Dave's is the best place on the internet!

LOL Traci. Wouldn't it be funny if a new thread had to be started before our host Terri (whose idea this was) even shows up to see all of the work that's been done in her absence.

I had to leave for a bit and knew I'd have to drive. I do believe I'll indulge in a small glass of that delicious mulled wine now.

Janet, how terrible. If my son, or anyone for that matter, made a "clean sweep" of my books they would be alienated and totally unwelcome thereafter forever, Forever is too long a time, so only for as long as I was alive.

Robert, I was very upset when we got back and so many things were missing from the house. But there were only a few things that I could think of that were actually missing. I am a compulsive shopper. I admit it and know that I don't need half of the things I buy. My hubby has complained about it for many years. Our house was wall to wall "stuff". I was able to go through everything that was taken out and I only kept a few of the things that really meant something to me. There is more space than ever in my house and it's so much easier to clean. So it wasn't all a bad thing. And when I stopped to really think about it... Some day, my kids would have had to go through all of those things and have an estate sale or something. I'm over it now. I know she did it with the best of intentions.

Glad it was acceptable for you. Guess I'm not as tolerant or forgiving when it comes to my "stuff". My sweetheart will sometimes drop a hint that the 'stuff' is out of control, then I willingly comply with the cleanup.

This piece was in the SG & M thread so I hope it isn't too redundant.

Just stoppin' by for a minute, still working on the rag rug and anxious to get back on it. I have two links for you jadajoy. The first is how the rug is done, where I found out how to begin...and the second is a video where a sweet thoughtful lady shows how the scalloped edge is done (which I am fixin' to do) and it also shows both double crochet and single stitches in the process which was a blessing since it'd been many years since I crocheted.

Aaah Robert. I love your windows. Just beautiful. Please don't worry about redundancy. Many new folks will be dropping who might never have seen your work before. So please post more photos of your work. You are truly an inspiration to all glass and wood artists.

I've been meaning to ask you if you've heard from Dr. Don lately. He and his wife Pam were heavy on my mind last week with the fires in California. I have said many prayers for the good folks out there who had to battle the fires and the fears.

I've been dropping hints all over Dave's. :-) I know there are probably many artists out there that have never been here to the artisans Forum. As many forums as there are on here, I would imagine most folks are like me with their 10-20 favorite forums. Sometimes, it's time to get outside of the box that we create for ourselves. Art comes in so many forms and I hope that many folks will share their passions with us.

Cactusfan, your teapots are lovely. Now the question is... do you make a good cup of tea? I love hot tea in the winter time. Especially at bath time. Sadly, I never really learned to make good hot tea though, so I just pour a cup of my already sweetened iced tea (I make that 2 gallons at a time because we drink so much of it) and microwave it for a couple of minutes. It's perfectly sweet when it comes out of the microwave. Because it's not over ice, it tastes completely different than when it's iced tea. Thank you so much for coming by. We hope you'll come back often to visit.

Pauline, your tapestry is wonderful. The colors look great on that wall. You can really see the details on the horse and the man.

Connie, thanks for posting the instructions. I was going to call you earlier and then had to go pick up some dressing from hubby downtown. The place he's working on - the Quality Cafe was damaged in the hurricane 2 years ago. It's a landmark here in Beaumont. The family that owns it also has a salad dressing "factory" there and they make incredible Italian dressing. They gave him some today and I needed to get it refrigerated. Anyhow, once that was done, I forgot that I was supposed to remind you to post instructions.

Jolie and I went by the Treasure House and I came out empty handed. It's just not much fun shopping without you Connie! I did see a bowl that was made similar to your rag rug, but the colors were wrong for you, so I left it there. Had they been right, I'd have bought it for you. :-)

Good evening all. I do hope everyone is enjoying their surroundings. I wanted to design the cafe with comfort in mind and many, many walls and windows to display. It looks like I may be talking to the realtor next door for a possible expansion. Terri, the cafe is doing well and I think you will be pleased when you get back.

Zen, the tapestry is fantastic. The colors are so vivid. I must ask a novice question. You stated this was woven. Did you hand weave this piece? I did not know people even know how to do this.anymore lol.

Balvenie, I am so glad you brought the stained glass in. I have not made it over to this forum yet. Your glass is wonderful and flawless. I love collecting antique stained glass and yours is right up there with the old artisans. Thanks for sharing and please bring anymore in that you would like to display.

Cactusfan, thank goodness you brought the teapots in. I didn't expect business to boom so quickly and have been crazy trying to wash the pots we have to keep up with the clientele. However, they are so pretty, I am almost afraid to use them. I love interesting teapots and this is another thing I have collected over the years. With this being the artisans cafe, I guess it would only be appropriate to serve with art itself, no?

I love exploring DG and have met many wonderful people while doing so. There is no telling where you will find me next. I have not gotten stuck in the box yet, luckily, and hope I never do. There is so much to learn on here and I want to know it all. Call me ambitious.

Wuvie, I understand where you were coming from in your earlier post. But I look at what you guys do on the Trash To Treasure forum and you cannot describe it as anything but art. As the old saying goes, one man's junk is another man's treasure. I am glad some people think it is only junk, or I would not have my treasures!

Just dropping off supplies for tomorrow. Here is some more Halloween candy for everyone to enjoy. I see most of the rest is gone. If I leave this at my house, I will simply eat it all. Enjoy and watch out for the Witching Hour.

Terri, Waybigo hugs! It's about time you got here. I was fixin' (Texas word, don'tchaknow) to call out the International Guard! I do hope you like what we've done in your absence. I sent out invitations to every place I could think of hoping the many artists here on Dave's would crawl out of the woodwork. And they have! YEAH!!! You have had an excellent idea and from the bottom of my heart, I thank you! Let the partying begin!!!

Cactus, I do love strawberry pots. Mine are all boring terra cotta clay. Yours is gorgeous! Of course, when I'm finding them for next to nothing at Goodwills and thrift stores, I'm not going to complain about a little boring. I wonder if I could paint mine. (waybigo grin, knowing I don't have a kiln so the paint would stick). It would be worth re-painting them year after year if they'd look half as good as yours.

Cheryl, your bowl reminds me of ice. I love that tempered glass.

Knowing you all are big cobalt fans and also knowing that many of you work with kilns, I feel I should share a story with you. I bought one of those slumped bottles in cobalt blue. I have been using it as a spoon rest next to my stove. (Some of you may have heard this) On the day of Hillary's wedding, I was preparing Spaghetti noodles and had a really big pot on the stove. The fire was blazing trying to get the water to boil. The noodles went into the pot. A few minutes passed and I heard a loud POP and when I went to see what it was, the glass cooktop to my stove had shattered. I stood there watching it and listening to it for a long time. I wanted to sit on the floor and cry! All of these people were expecting to be fed though, so I took a deep breath and carried on with the plan. The glass held together, but my "new to me" stove was ruined! Later that day, my hubby was looking things over to try and determine what has caused it to shatter. That blue glass spoon rest was sitting at an angle close to the edge of the stove. The heat had built up under neath of it and radiated downward, causing the explosion of the glass.

My reason for telling you all this... if you have one of those bottles, don't put it close to your glass cooktop. It cost me $646 to replace the glass top. So the wedding that I'd spent less than $200 on got rather expensive because of a stupid error on my part.

Now, let's talk about something pleasant.

Traci, thank you so much for the Halloween candy. I intentionally didn't buy any of it this year. The majority of folks that come by here are much too old to be out trick or treating. And on top of that, I usually end up eating about half of it before Halloween gets here anyway. I will have much more self control knowing you all will see each piece that I take. :-) I sure miss those little fun size 3 Muskateers! I was glad to see them on the beautiful platter you put out Traci. I didn't know they came in Dark Chocolate! I'm in trouble now!

THUD!!!! That was me hitting the floor when I saw those lizards Gourd. Where in the world did you find lizard stones like that??? I'm having serious lizard envy! And the frogs!!! I do hope they are gentle with the crickets. We need that crickety music around here! :-) You must be a hypertufa-er to have such cool stone boo pots. Did you make the lizards? Oh man, I gotta go back and look again! Still incredible! Connie and I want to try our hands at hypertufa. We've bought a bag of cement. We have a wheel barrow. Surely we can find whatever else we need. (Right after the dragon!) We really want to make some planters. Should we do the hypertufa or papercrete for planters? Perhaps you can give us some pros and cons on them.

Dahtzu, I'm holding my hands behind me as I gaze at your blue and green sets. I promised you I wouldn't snag them, and I won't. I still haven't decided if I like one better than the other. They are both so beautiful. And aren't you the one with the gigantic red mum??? I looked at Lowe's the other day and theirs were pathetic. I've never seen one as pretty as yours. Have you had any success with the cuttings??? (wriggling eyebrows here)

Gourd, We have FROG GUARDS!! How wonderful. I LOVE THEM!! How cute are those, and believe me, I don't go for the Cutsy frog art out there. I love the different and strange. Hope you don't take that as an insult, for it is not meant to be. How about the word Original. Did you make these by hand? Some look to be transforming from water dwellers to land creatures. Fantastic!! Bravo!! I am so glad the sentry is here to keep all non welcome bugs away. Janet, better watch out for the skitter. I am glad you came in and Boo corner is great! So glad to meet you too. Named Ladies in our repertoire so far - Penelope (with the butterfly), Maude - Golfing Lady, Fishes in the Garden (Indian Lady - but her hair is somewhat normal with braids) and UMAW the Unique Mermaid Above Water. The Garden Nymphs are Miss Grace, Miss Eltie and Miss Morphetta Nymph.

Believe it or not, I drew the lizards on a cardboard then traced them onto the flagstone, then one of the guys here used a saw to cut them out. They are about 3 ft long., next will be some turtles in a couple of weeks, I still have to draw some so that there are not too many curves. Maybe a roadrunner, there are so many things that can be cut out of the flagstone.

The frogs are handmade with cement that I had left from the leaf castings. They are different, kinda pre-historic looking..lol. molded by hand, so each one is different. Thank you for the compliments everyone.

I'm not the tool person in our duo, Connie is. Seems like the tile saw we saw looked more like a table saw though. I like the looks of yours better. Janet, I am impressed with the way you keep up with the posts, how do you have time to do that and all of your lovely art work?

To all of you I know right now that I won't be commenting on every piece of work, please don't be offended if I don't comment on one piece I am sure I will on another of yours.

balvenie None of your glass is redundant to me, I haven't seen your work before. It is lovely. I want a window like that one.

denimangle, What a wonderful gift you made for your friend. The sculpture I am making right now is for a woman who saw my one in eight series and sat for a sculpture as a recovery gift for herself.

The tapestry is hand woven on a frame loom. The piece I posted was my first. I made it in a class I took while living in Norway. The teacher I had insisted that the back look as good as the front so it is exactly the same only in reverse. It is incredibly time consuming and fun. I have a large tapestry loom that I have in storage, but will get it out one of these days. I am planning a new one for my frame loom. Each color is carried along and you go row by row. It truly is by hand, no tools involved. I sold all of the other ones I made. I will have to get the photos of them put into digital form.

If any of you ever travel to Madrid there is a tapestry there that is still producing wall size tapestries for castles on the hand looms they used hundreds of years ago. I must have spent several hours there watching them weave. I will have to dig my travel information out and put it on the book shelve in the cafe for all to see.

dahtzu, blue is usually my favorite color, but I sure do like the green set.

lizards and frogs are perfect for the garden. What a gorgeous place this is.

Time to post this and see how many new posts there are.

None it is hard to believe.

LOL Zen, I think it's time we wake them up. What could we
use for making noise? Pots, pans, we need racket!

Okay, how about we tempt them out of bed?

Brownies are baking as we speak. If that smell doesn't get them
out of bed, we'll run the Hoover! LOL

Not one to show up empty handed, a set of recycled wind chimes
for the garden. An old rake, some old silverware and a bit of
fishing line. Hope you don't mind, this is a re-gift from another thread.
Nothing fancy.

Good Morning Pauline,

We are between projects right now. I've enjoyed looking at each of the pieces that have come through these doors so much. I can't help but let the artist know how much I admire them and the time and efforts involved in creating the masterpiece.

The arts have been spread out to several forums. This is one of my most favorite forums in all of Dave's. I'd much rather spend time admiring the work than cleaning house. I've learned so much here in this forum about so many different mediums of art. It's truly an inspirational forum. To have so much beauty in one thread is just wonderful. I've already bookmarked this thread as a favorite and will do so as more cafe threads are created.

So many things go unappreciated these days. Managers only hear the complaints, and rarely the praise for their staff. When someone does something well, it should always be acknowledged. On the rare occasions when hubby takes me out, it drives him bonkers when I always make a point to tell a waitress to please let the chef or cook know how much I enjoy the food I'm served. Even going through a drive thru, I've been known to say, "Thanks for cooking for me!" It always generates a smile from the money taker. I can only hope that they pass along the thanks to the person that actually did the cooking. It doesn't cost me a thing but about 5 seconds of my time.

I thought I smelled chocolate as I was typing, but figured it was the "chocolate truffle" candle I was burning. Can't wait for the brownies to come out of the oven. I think it was Bill Cosby who said how good they were for you. Eggs, flour, etc. all part of a healthy diet. And I've even heard that dark chocolate is essential for good health! Now THAT's MY kind of philosophy!

Karen your wind chime is great. Are there swivels on each of the spoons to make them spin? Or do they spin in the wind regardless of having a swivel or not? I received a really nice silverware mobile from last year's College Station round up. I'd planned on making one, and then didn't have to. Are your spoons silver or stainless?

Everyone, please don't worry about whether something has already been seen elsewhere here on Dave's. Many folks are just coming on board Dave's and may not have found the threads with your projects that could possibly be on page 2 or 3 of a forum. And I must say that ALL of the projects I've seen here in this thread should have a repeat performance. :-) The creations you post may be old news to you, but be totally new to others. There's still plenty of space to show case everyone's art so please post away!!!

Is it brownies yet??? Lordy you made me hungry KM!

Pauline, watch their faces as you do. It's worth the few seconds that you spend doing it. I've never worked in a drive thru, but it seems like it would be a very thankless job.

There is a really nice little maintenance man at Market Basket where I buy my groceries. I've seen him with brooms and with big floor shiners. When I see him working so hard to make MY store nice, I comment on how good the floors look or just take a moment to let him know how much I appreciate his efforts. Each time I walk into the store, he smiles and tells me good morning, etc. There is so much that goes on behind the scenes in places like that that I know gets taken for granted. He may be the "lowly janitor" on the totem pole of folks there, but I really appreciate that MY store is always clean. I let the managers know how much I appreciate his hard work also. Who knows. It might get him a raise some day.

Wuvie and denimangle have added sound with wind chimes and dahtzu colored the garden green and blue.

Pupil,

I do realize that quilting is art...I was just saying that I thought the "call" was for garden art and I didn't think paintings or quilts would be displayed in the garden! :-) I was glad to see the quilt because that let me know I wan't the only one showing something different.

I think I can tell from the strong emotion that you are our resident quilter! I LOVE beautiful quilts! My grandmother made them and I used to collect the hand-pieced tops from garage sales. I have 2 that need to be quilted and SOME DAY will get around to it! :-)

Hi Connie,
Terri's idea was for all art, not just garden, but you have that figured out now.

Strong emotions, dead on. I love art of all kind. Quilter, unfortunately not. I can't sew at all, BUT, I have always wanted to learn and find myself wandering through books on beginner's sewing on the internet. My Grandmother has a sewing machine she is giving to me. I just have to take the idea off the backburner and make it real.

Quilts are one of my favorite items, as many have so much meaning in them. My Grandmother is also passing down to my 3 year old DD a very special quilt. Her mother sewed the squares, my Grandfather's mother put them together and my Grandmother finished it. My mother is going to figure out something to do to add to it, which is wonderful because this is not her mom giving it to me. It is my Father's Mom and they are divorced. It was my Grandmother's idea. I am going to add my own little contribution by stitching their names and relation on it. First I have to figure out how to stitch. lol. So that will be two Great Greats, One Great, One Grand, and me. This will be the most priceless piece of anything I own.

Any suggestions on good books for beginners?

I taught stitching, quilting, knitting, needlepoint, embroidery, painting on fabric etc etc etc (I also sold the books) for years and I can say there is nothing better than a very good teacher to show you the ropes and get you excited about the medium. I frankly can't see how you can get a good foundation from a book... ya gotta have practical hands-on experience. I hope you find a good source for your learning experience.

Traci
I started out with the book
" Quilts! Quilts!! Quilts!!! " The Complete Guide To Quiltmaking by Diana McClun and Laura Nownes.

It shows step by step and helped me when I just had a lot of desire with no experience. Later when I knew this was not a passing fancy I took some classes at the local fabric store.

I think the items presented here are garden art and also to decorate "The Cafe" which leaves the choice of items pesented open to just about anything we have created. A quilt to snuggle in while perusing "the shop" seems a perfect addition.

Would love to see pics of your heirloom quilt. I bet its lovely!

Join the club, Zany. In fact last weekend I donated a huge amount of craft items that I bought a couple of years back to a group of people who attend day programs at our local mental health clinic. The counselor was thrilled to get them and she sent word that the clients were all excited about the items too.

One of my favorite things to do is shop a Dollar Tree Store. I never leave with less than a forty to sixty dollar ticket. I see things there that have many uses. They have a very small craft section but that is not all that I buy. I don't usually feel too badly for spending a dollar on things to play with.

Some of my past attempts at being crafty include picture frames with mini beads adhered to the sides. Tall glass candles with colored stones glued to them and taking some of the plainer looking children's pocket books and either glueing or sewing on tiny flowers, buttons or beads.

My gardening and working with plants the past three or so years has taken the place of doing much other creative work, so I still have tons of craft items that I will probably never use. I am glad that I saw an ad on our local Freecycle board looking for craft items. I now have a place to donate things as I find them for their use.

I love some of the art that is shown on this thread. You all are sure a talented bunch.

I am an artist with exquisite skill, at least in my dreams, too bad it's not real! In my dreams the flowers I paint with oils look like they grew right out of the soil. The sculptures that I see in my minds eye are sensual pieces that reach toward the sky, they make people laugh, ooh, aah and sigh. And since this fantasy is so far from the truth, just look for me in the make believe booth.

Hi Sandty, I love your gourd work. I grow gourds but haven't really started crafting them yet - still building the house and garden. Are you familiar with the work of Don Weeks (I think that's his last name). His work is in a lot of the gourd books and I met him at a gourd festival. Very similar to your work. Uses a lot of pine needles.

If you still need pine needles send me a dmail. I may be able to help.

in answer to all the questions...These are the first baskets I have made and I made them for Christmas gifts for my 3 children...I do hope they will appreciate them and the love, time and effort I put into them. I would love to be able to make and sell a lot of them ...Havent a clue as to what to charge for them...I have looked on the enternet and they are very pricey, but it does take a while to make one...As soon as I get some pics taken I will post my crochet christmas ornaments, balls, angels, bells, icicles and more...

I have been on here all day since I found this forum...every one is so nice

Hi Everyone - Curlers, thank you so much for sharing Pauls paintings and your gourd work. Wow, what great talent. Someone mentioned possibly going to a park and collecting some pine needles there. You might also want to try knocking on the doors at some houses with the pine trees in them and askiing if you could get some. Of course you should have a sample of the work that you are doing with the. pine needles to show the home owner. After they see these baskets they certainly caannot say no to you.

Again, thank you for sharing your wonderful talent with us.

Hi Terri,

We did have a wonderful time. I found those little cardboard decorations at Goodwill and couldn't think of anything I wanted more on them than photos of my grandbabies. :-) I had asked both of my son in laws to take photos of the "event" so that we could share our Christmas with my father in law who's still in the Nursing Home. I made a CD with most of those photos that he'll be able to watch on his TV. Between both SIL's I had over 400 photos to work with. Each year, we always say that we wish we'd taken more photos. I had very little editing to do on these photos.

The robe that my hubby was "modeling" is what I made him for Christmas. It's made of fleece. I've been wanting to do that for several years. This is the first time I've ever cut out a pattern and done the "whole nine yards" of sewing. I was really proud of it and he loves it and has been wearing it a lot. The fit was really good on him.

The hats that both he and his brother are wearing were made by my oldest daughter from scraps from the same fabric. She made them so that when the "boys" ride on the 4 wheelers when hunting, they don't freeze their ears off. Hubby "tested" it out the day after Christmas and it worked wonderfully. The blanket that Connie was holding up was a quilt that Jennifer made for her. Jen also made each of the kids a fleece blanket.

You also might have noticed that beautiful blue rag rug in my kitchen that Connie made me for Christmas.

Connie and I made Mom one of the wind mirrors and she was delighted with it. I took some photos of it before she headed back to San Antonio but I haven't downloaded them yet. She's not a big fan of wind chimes (*which I was going to give her) but she really liked the wind mirrors.

I'll be looking forward to the New Year's party. Thanks for the invite. :-)

Thank you Zany. I had been looking for some woodsy looking camo for quite some time that was also warm. I would have preferred to make it from flannel, but there weren't any good prints at Joann's. One day I was there I found that bolt of fabric. I went to the cutting table and asked the lady how much of this do I need to make a robe. She asked how much the pattern called for. We went over to the patterns and picked out one I thought he'd like. Since that was the only bolt of fabric that had a true camo pattern, and not the usual "army" look, I bought the whole thing (8 yards). The robe took 4 yards to make. I plan on making him some lounging britches also but just ran out of time before Christmas. I had to work on it when he was hunting because he usually shows up for lunch most week days and I am never sure just what time that will be. I knew it would take a while to get it cut out, sewn, etc. I had Jennifer come over to give me instructions because having never sewn before, I was having a devil of a time reading the instructions on the pattern itself. I don't think it would have turned out nearly as nice without her guidance. I'm sure I would have had to rip out a lot of incorrectly sewn seams also. She was also very proud of the robe I'd sewn. As I've shown in other threads, here on Dave's, she sews wonderful outfits for Kaylee that are very professional looking. She sells them on Etsy and eBay after Kaylee wears them a time or two. Most of the outfits that Kaylee was wearing on that show were made by Jennifer. I have no idea where she got "that" from. Must have been from Connie! HAHAHAHA
