We just had two hot water heating system radiators sand blasted and painted. When the plumber's crew came to reinstall them, they discovered a hairline crack in one of them. So they did not continue to fill it with water and put it back in service, until they could consult their boss about the potential for repair. While we are waiting to hear back from "the boss," we wonder if anyone has had such a problem and repaired it successfully.
This is a cast iron radiator? Any glue, putty, etc., would give way from heat/cool expansion/contracton. The only way would be to weld it and that would be a difficult and probably expensive weld. If you really really want it repaired take it to a good welder & see what he thinks. He might sneak in a quick tig weld and it'd be OK, but it might require preheating and slow cooling making it costly.
Thank you for your reply. Our plumbing/heating person did not think a repair would be successful--something that involved heating, I think he called it "braising"? He did think it might be possible to just replace that section--it is on the end--but has not been successful in finding an appropriate one. So it looks like it will have to be replaced--perhaps with a panel radiator--and he was to get back to us after Thanksgiving with cost comparisons.
