We have a combination wood furnace with electric we use for back up and warmer weather. The blower motor is sitting and whinning and doesn't kick in. My question is can I keep a small fire going without over heating things?

The electric unit is on top and the blower motor is in the duct work on the bottom.

Posting a picture so you get a clearer idea. DH is up north and I haven't heard back from him yet.

You could keep a small fire going, but how long will it last?
If you can get to the blower that's humming, try giving it a spin (while it's humming)
in the right direction of course, a blower that looks like this one,
being careful, of course, spin the inside wheel clockwise,
it may start up, if it does, put the "Fan Switch"
on the thermostat in the "ON" position and the electric heat will keep
to the thermostat setting, if the blower doesn't start, then you may
need to break out the backup heaters, you do have backup heat don't you?

Later,
Paul

I didn't think anyone would answer so forgot about my question.

Thanks for answering. I finally got ahold of DH and he came home from hunting. Took it apart and did what you suggested. So we had heat. Then he called a furnace guy he knew and he had everything we needed and fixed it for a good price.

The electric is our backup. We burn wood when it gets cold enough. In 21 years we never had a problem. Hopefully we are good for another 21.

The house got down to 58 degrees the first night and we had a hard freeze outside. so it actually stayed fairly decent and I dressed in layers.
