| The cafe is looking mighty fine this morning folks. Love all of those flowers. Each is perfect, just as God made them. And now they are preserved forever, right here.
I thought I'd bring in some little stash jars to put on the tables for tips. I didn't make these, but admire whoever did. :-) Again, these were found in thrift shops all over town for less than a dollar a piece.
The coffee is tasting very good this morning. Thanks to whoever was up early to make it. :-) Click the image for an enlarged view.

| Pupil, yes, you might say I grow cactus LOL! I have been growing indoor (for my climate, anyway) cacti for over 25 years (I'm down to about 45 from a high of about 72). I also have six Opuntia (prickly pears - one that is 5 feet in diameter), two Opuntia imbricata (tubular, like a cholla), yuccas, agaves and several small ball cacti (some of those in troughs) outdoors. Only one agave is staying outside for the winter - my prize babies will live in the Agave Sanctuary (aka the dining room) for the winter. |

| This is from my cactus garden that is an outside garden right here in Minnesota. So far I have found 7 varieties that make it though our zone 4 winter. I will contribute this one to our cafe garden. I agree the coffee is delicious this morning. Do I detect a hint of cardamom in it?
Janet, scrapple sounds a bit like haggis. 1 sheep's pluck (stomach bag), oatmeal, suet, lamb's liver, meat stock, onion, cayenne pepper, Jamaica pepper and salt. It is a Scottish dish.

| WOW Zen, that is incredible! I love it!
I started a Succulent garden this year. I pulled up a bunch of elephant ears and other plants and put down flagstones to park my potted cacti on. I would have sworn that I got all of the EE's, but lo and behold, they all came back up, covering up my new garden. I'll have to find another spot next year for my succulents.
Here's what it looked like in the spring. I was so proud of this job. Was being the operative word there.

| Zen,
I love the head, is it ceramic with a metallic glaze? or metal -perfect meld between abstract and realistic- very difficult to pull off well. I would like to know if the sculptures you have shown on the last few Cafe threads would be winter weather tolerant or would be best taken in when it freezes?
I'm also partial to the colors and background of the flower arrangement and setting pupil posted, so warm and rich.
terriculture, you have a rich storytelling imagination.

| Great Green Man. The way he is peeking out is perfect.
The head is ceramic with a black glaze The lighter areas are where the glaze isn't as thick. Most of the work that is in the garden stays there. The very colorful pieces are low fire and have to come in for the winter. The anemones and the bright colored shells have to come in they are low fire.
Here is the one and only frog I have made. He was made for a friend that collects frogs. I think he will let me borrow him for our cafe garden for awhile anyway. He has to come in for the winter though. Click the image for an enlarged view.

I remember something earlier that I made a couple of years ago. This is a lighted floral bouquet. The flowers were leftover from my daughter's wedding. I used a string of Christmas lights and floral tape to run the lights along the stems of the flowers. The remainder of the lights is down inside of the vase which is an irridescent ceramic. It's really pretty when lit up. The flowers have a nice soft glow to them. Just thought I'd set this vase on a table in the corner.

| Oh Zen, you just moved up to the top of the list in my book. What a gorgeous tattoo. I love it. And DD is stunning too. To be that young and beautiful, the world is your playground.
I have a hummingbird on my hip, 18 when I got it. Needless to say it is not the best tat in the world. I want to put a flower vine (in color as I have the black already on another) in front of it, but can't find one anywhere. could you draw me one. A little persective---left front hip, facing right, beak tilted at a 45 degree angle upwards, approximately 1 1/2" wide and 3" long. I have been looking for years. I would love a sketch if you have the time. I have been dying to get the old one colored up, so this would give me an excuse. Little story, when I got it my immediate said it looked like it was going for my "flower". Ever since then I have looked for the right vine so she could quit worrying about her 34 year old, married with a daughter, daughter. lol.
Weeds, Those are the most gorgeous weeds I have ever seen. I have never even heard of this flower! Your garden area is one to be envied for sure. I love the walk also! One question, what is the little blue building behind the rabbit?
Blue is my favorite color too. I love tourqoise!! Click the image for an enlarged view.

| My brother sent me this poem he wrote of our childhood.
Under the bridge
Years ago, as a child growing up, down in old El Paso.
We'd play under a bridge way after dark, before the waters flowed.
Every winter they would close the gates to keep the water back
And all of kids would play in the canal or up on the railroad tracks.
With old Christmas trees after Christmas time, and make us a fort to play.
We didn't have expensive toys but just stuff, we’d find along the way.
Old pieces of rope or old barbed wire, rusty nails pulled from a board.
A discarded lamp socket, a roll of black tape and a rotten extension cord.
With our hammers and nails, soon we would see, our fort come to life.
Up in an old cotton wood tree, we would stand off attacks with our knife.
Cowboys and Indians or hide and seek, there was no video or MTV.
But mulberry trees, alley grape vines, would be our treat you see.
Those were simple times, occasionally a grape vine we would smoke.
Just kids growing up in the country, raised by simple folks.
Chasing the block ice truck if we would catch a ride.
We'd duck under the canvas; grab some hot ice, then run and hide.
Down in the canal we would run to our land of children’s fantasy,
An old dog named pooch, a rope and a stick, hanging from a limb on a tree.
When the springtime, came the water would come, washing everything away,
All of the sticks and boards of our fort, nothing there would stay.
Sometimes in life, we have let things go, and let just wash down the way.
Forget all unpleasant thoughts, just let the good thoughts stay,
And like that old bridge just across the road from our childhood home.
Every springtime, all sins washed away, no loved one ever left alone.
Christ didn't come to bring harbor and guilt, but to set us free.
Free to love, free to forgive, without animosity.
Open the gates of the Savior's love, forgiving things of the past.
For someday this old world will vanish away. Under the bridge at last.

How wonderful a poem, that was, of course being... ahem...57, that is what we did...built forts, and used found objects for playtoys...huge neighborhood get togethers! It was captured perfectly! Love, love, blue, to me it is the color of hope and excitement! What a stunning young lady! I thought she was a model in an ad?! Pupil, the little blue building, is a storage shed for planting tools and my nets etc. for the 2 ponds right next to it, the photos didn't show...i have many fish, a snake, a traveling turtle, and numerous lizards and toads, and frogs, next to it! Works out nicely, as i don't have to go to the garage for garden tools...it is starting to rot (even tho it is made out of cedar) It was ordered online and put together by hubby and myself...the company is no longer in business! Love, the floral arrangements folks, how fresh and pretty! isn't this forum (excuse me...cafe!) fun? Not really focussed on one theme, but many...sue |

| What I like is the fact that art comes in many shapes and sizes. I think I said before, I wish we had speakers, so the musicians out there could play for us. One of my dear friends writes articles here. They are wonderful and always tell a story. That, to me, is art too. Being able to bring someone into their world or paint a vivid picture which recalls a fond, sad, or bittersweet memory is hard to do. I really am glad Terri came up with this idea, because, as an interloper, I get to enjoy a vast array of talents.

| pupil: don't be afraid----I'd be honored to have a "twin"! I took a pair of lapis and turquoise earrings down to HD and spent about 2 hours faffing about with paint swatches before I found the "perfect" colors. I can't draw a lick, but I can paint a decent straight line!~ Glad you liked the yurtio, too; DH did all the structural design. I was the "advisor"; as in "honey, what if we...?" It became a round structure only because we tore out a Doughboy pool we never used, and where it sat was the only flat place in the yard! We went from there... Recently I mentioned that I would like an old-style sattelite dish nearby that we could convert to a gazebo roof and grow my porcelainberry vine on. DH hit freecycle the next day, and now we have one in the shed. Of course we're not ready to actually DO anything with it yet, but we HAVE it. Sooooo many projects, Soooo little time!
Loved the poem! Reminded me of making mint tea under the honey locusts in the hot Denver summer sun... The "recipe" was mashed up mint from the basement window-wells, as much sugar as we could snitch from our moms' kitchens, and a little water from the garden hose. Yummmm! |

Zen, your daughter is really beautiful. Her smile lights up the place. The tattoo you designed is really cool.
Ima, I love those doors. The color combination is great! I know what you mean about stockpiling things that you intend to do things with. I've got some glass bricks that came off of somebody's door. He brought them home a couple of years ago. They are mortared together. I'd love to do something with them, but hubby didn't care for my idea of building a cedar fence in the front and putting them on the top of the fence. There are double rows of 8 ft sections. One of the sections is broken. He tells me to put an ad for free glass bricks. I am going to figure out SOMETHING to do with them. I suggested to Connie that she take them. She said she could put them on top of her fence around the pool. When I told hubby about that idea, he said that they'd be too heavy and would fall and probably hurt someone. He's so darn practical! HAHAHAHA
I'd planned to put them in an area and make a big salad bowl garden using an unused pond form. He didn't like the area I chose for that because he parks the lawnmower there. Come on now, it can go someplace else! And he reminded me that the sun wasn't so good there either. I think I took a photo of that idea. Let me see if I can find it and maybe you all can give me some ideas to use them. Click the image for an enlarged view.

| I had a clay class last night and thus am way behind.
Unique, would it work to put the top edge of the pond down say 1" below ground level so that you put the glass bricks right over the lip to keep it from showing? It seems that the glass bricks should go right up to the waters edge.
Would there be some kind of blue foil that you could have under the bricks to give them a blue shimmer? My imagination is on a roll. That seems like a place similar to Michaels would have a blue foil.
I have never looked at putting in a pond so I don't know the requirements.
Blue, blue, blue. It is interesting that blue is the most common favorite color and yet when we are down we say we have the blues.

| Morning all. Wonderful nights sleep, but now it is bitterly cold. Up goes the thermometer!!
Sorry I didn't have much time last night. I was dragging from cleaning up this place. I bought some trash cans, so please pick up your messes.
Pigeon, I got on a paint website and worked on my door last night. We have a half moon window, so it will look a little different. I am doing my bedroom in what I call Chinese blue. More of a grayish blue. I would paint the whole house that way if I could. It is a relaxing color for me.
Dr. TA, hope you don't mind, but I put the poem in my office at home too.
Terri, I LOVE the rugs. It could get messy, but I know you can just whip one up daily.
Mibus, the reason I was so excited about the baskets is because Terri has a slight obsession with them. She does amazing floral arrangements too. I know she is going to have a fit when she sees them. I would watch them closely and also the stained glass, I have been eyeing it all morning.

| The pond won't be used as a pond. It was in the ground before Hurricane Rita blew through Southeast Texas. When the tree close to it uprooted, the pond buckled in half. It still holds water, but that hole has since been filled in and the "electricity in a bucket" (extension cord from the house that was buried along the way to the 5 gallon bucket) has since been dismantled also. Hubby does NOT want to dig another hole for the pond. I sure ain't gonna do it myself, so I was thinking of making it into a waybigo planter. The little pond form inside of the big one already has holes drilled in the bottom of it.
I have a place in the front yard that I can park the big pond form and make a tropical garden from it. Unfortunately, there is no electricity anywhere close to that spot. I had thought to put the glass bricks around the above ground pond/planter and light them from behind. I just have to convince Connie to come and run some electricity for me. Hubby is too busy hunting to do the job for me. I am not going to mess with electricity! My hair is curly enough already! HAHAHAHA
I like the blue foil idea though. When Spring rolls around, I will do something with the whole business, providing I can keep hubby from dragging everything to the road for "big trash". I'm just collecting ideas in the mean time.
Mibus, I didn't see a link there to scroll down. ;-> I love your baskets. Even more, I love that you made them yourself. Better put a padlock on them though, cuz Terri has a basket fetish! HAHAHAHA She does do some incredible things with the baskets. I see baskets all the time in my galivanting and want them... buy them... then they just sit there. You all will be my inspiration for actually doing something with them.
Your stained glass deer is beautiful. While I love abstract art in stained glass, it takes a real talent to make an actual image from the shapes of the glass which I really appreciate.
Traci that new hot drink looks good. I heard an advertisement for a pumpkin latte this morning that sounded heavenly. and that is what I thought of when I clicked on the thumbnail. It's a shame that pumpkin isn't more readily available throughout the year, without buying it in a can, that is. |

Janet, I love glass block, and have a whole wall of it in my enclosed patio. DH and I had a major learning curve, and it took us 2 years to get all 4 floor-to-ceiling sections done. I still don't have the columns in-between painted...and that's been on my list for ages. I have a few more blocks that were from my FIL's place (he was an incredible scrounger) and I've stacked & used them as part of temporary table bases out in the front courtyard, with slabs of thrift-store marble on top. Eventually will do something with lights, probably. If I were you, I'd separate them----you'll find more to do with them!! I've seen really neat stuff done using individual blocks as inserts in walls and fences, for instance. Click the image for an enlarged view.

That glass block is so expensive... I thought about glueing broken colored glass to one to make a candle holder/light. For one, it wouldn't be bad or a couple, but when you want a wall (which I do), it will run into some$$. I should start buying a couple at a time too.
What a great tip there.

This guy lives in CA and has several things he has done ..I ran across his site when I was looking for things to do with bamboo since we were blessed with a bunch of it when we moved in
http://www.kissingfrogs.tv/trellis.html
scroll down to the bottom list and click on the one for the pond...min d you I know it is not what you have to work with but the it uses the idea of the blocks around it and the birdbath link talks of how to use gold leaf inside to make it glow more...just thinking of how you could incorporate some of his ideas into your "pond" form.
I am guessing the Terri you are talking of is terriculture?
I don't think I need to lock up the baskets if so as I see no one other then Unique that is the only one remotely near me LOL...although maybe we could barter as I am still slowly working on the Tredennick/Tredinnick family tree to get actual locations and info as all I have is a hand written tree with names and no locations and I know they came over from England (my great-grandparents) LOL
As for selling I don't have a problem doing that but my boss at the restaurant says shipping could be an issue since it is made from raw material.

| Aaahh...Weedsgalore, I have that same little garden shed. I love it. I have it on my deck and it's just right. I think Janet and Connie even asked me where I got it.
LOL, I have to admit that glass brick has me thinking creatively too. Does the Flowerpot Cafe serve wine? I'll be interested in what you do with that pond Janet, as I have a similar one in back of the garage. I was thinking of putting the pond in the front garden in the next re-landscaping phase and putting pond liner over it. In the mean time I'm saving it, because I know at some point the perfect use for it will fall into place.
My friends and I are making a series digital garden art photos. I came up with this one last weekend, it is Dragonfly ornament in the garden. I used a small hand held led light that has the four colors yellow, green, red and blue. I think this has the red and blue.

| Welcome Randy!!! Waybigo hugs! Get yourself a glass. There's always wine in the cooler. Help yourself!
Your dragonfly is gorgeous! I love those colors. Tell us more about how you created these incredible photos.
You DO have that same little shed. I knew I'd seen that shed somewhere before. I remember it well. Connie crafted one from cedar after seeing yours. My very first thought at first glance was a portapotty too! HAHAHAHA I just wasn't going to admit it. Then when I really looked closer at the photo, I knew what it was for.
I went to the site you posted Mibus and was fascinated with the pond that he built. There were many cool things on that site and I was lost in the site for about an hour. I bookmarked it for ideas for the spring. Loved those revolving fish. Randy, those would look really cool around your pond.
If you're feeling industrious, you could come over and help me dig a hole for my pond in the front yard. I'd have it far enough from the street that "little ones" wouldn't be tempted to go swimming. I've really missed the pond we had. It was so relaxing to sit out there and watch the fish swimming around at night. There was a light inside of the pond. |

| The one I posted was a kit from Michael's for about $30. My friend bought 2 and one of our Women's Work Day projects was to sand, paint and assemble them. They are MIGHTY comfortable! I keep thinking I'd like to get one for myself, but I don't really NEED one. What I NEED to do is paint the frames of my director's chairs!! |
