Welcome all to the Artisan's FLOWERPOT Cafe'. We invite innovation, imagination and conversation about all things art. Please pull up a chair and order your favorite beverage. Go ahead and indulge in some yummies too. As many of you burn the midnight oil, Terri came up with a self serve area when no one is around to help you. We work on the honor system. This is a cafe' to bring all forms of art together, so we may share, teach and learn new ideas. If I may, I would like to make a few requests.

This being a subsidary of the FLOWERPOT CAFE' CORP, if you have any flowers to bring in or even flower art, We would love to see it.

With the holidays coming upon us, some ideas from any of the forums would be great. This old contractor is even going to try her hands at drying flowers and making cards and such. However, please keep bring other pieces. We just though it might be a good way to share unique items for the seasons. Any feedback is welcome. You may D-mail Terriculture and she is quite good at answering your questions.

*****WELCOME TO TERRICULTURE'S ARTISAN'S FLOWERPOT CAFE*****

Been meaning to post something over here for the longest and I see you're on your 5th cafe already over here. Business must be good on the Artisian side. At my snail pace, I will have to stick with the original cafe. Just wanted to say hi, and great link mibus2. I LOVE bamboo. . .just can't afford a real plant yet. Terri, I will have to start a new sketch book since the old one has flooded out. Haven't sketched in forever though. Well, see ya later.

RJ, if you get around to visiting this thread?...The little garden shed, was f rom a mom &pop on-line studio...i fell in love with the copper roof..they closed the shop a couple of years ago...how sad, i would love another, as the floor of this one is rotting...as many things do here in Fla. (even parts of our population, lol...). Terri, love your arrangements! I bet all the local flower sellers in your country are very pleased that you are around? All the little Eliza Dolittle's of London, must flock to your door?! I can see a line of "flower ladies", vying with each other to sell you flowers for your arrangements? lol...sue

Ok, Ms. Terri, here is an painting/illustration, ink pen and acrylic paints...i did this for a publication that dealt with the English china "Chintz", every issue i had to come with an illustration dealing with that particular china pattern...this one (you can see the real china, is called "Green Tulip". it is made by Royal Winton..and is vintage (though it has been reproduced). Our bunny (told you i like Beatrix Potter) is bringing a load of this to the readers..i incorporated all the flowers in the china pattern, Daffodils, Narcissus, and i forget the yellow ones? The editor had recently bought a patchwork coat with a teapot on it, so i incorporated that, and she loved to wear capri pants...there is a caption for the painting too...but since i did the artwork..i forgot what it said..i have the issue somewhere?(i would never send originals through the mail only prints) Thought you would enjoy this, as it is a tribute to your wonderful country...where i collect this type of china/earthenware from! Hope you like...sue

weeds, that must have been a fun series to do. I particularly like how colorful it is.

terri, my children grew up outside of the USA and they were shocked the first time they saw American foot ball. "Why is the ball such a funny shape?" We happened to be on a holiday in a small town in Germany the night they won the world cup back in the early '90's. Our B&B was on the town square, as you can imagine we didn't get much sleep that night and the kids were to young for us to join in on the party.

Time to get my day started.

To the Lurkers of the Cafe:

I've been posting invitations to the cafe everywhere on Dave's I can think of hoping more artists will come and participate. There are so many talented folks here on Dave's Garden. Every where I go, all of the folks are just incredible. This has got to be one of the very best sites on the internet!

We're having a lot of fun here in the cafe. People have been posting their beautiful creations from all corners of the world. Thank you for sharing your art and your talent with us all. This cafe has become like an Art Gallery of Dave's. It's just wonderful seeing so many talented folks come together this way. I hope this cafe continues at it's rapid pace for many years to come. I hope that some day, in the future, we'll be on page 500+! HAHAHAHA

I've had a few dmails from folks saying they are enjoying the cafe but don't feel their particular art is worthy. This saddens me because we surely don't want anyone to feel intimidated because their art "isn't good enough". Everyone here shares a love of art and is always looking for inspiration for the next project. Your project might be just what's needed to inspire someone to try out something they've never tried before. There are so many different forms of art. We all appreciate them all. So if you paint, or sew, or make soap, or carve wood, or ... well, the list goes on and on and on ... please share your art with us here. New or old, already posted, or newly created, we love it all!

We hope more folks will stop by and visit and say hello. Share your art with us. If you are not the artist that created it, that's OK too. Chances are, if you appreciate it, others will too. It's all about the sharing and caring because we all love beautiful things.

None of us here bites. Everyone will be welcomed with open arms. So quit lurking and start posting. We hope that the art here will inspire you to create something today.

Traci, thank you for your efforts to keep the threads to a manageable length for the folks who are on dial up. I know they appreciate it very much.

Thanks so much for being here folks. Have a cup of coffee and enjoy the show!

Well folks, I'm on my way to Connie's to work on my dragon. I've been googling dragons for musculature, etc. and have a CD with all of my "finds". I've set up a laptop in her shop so that we can view stuff like this without having to go in the house. I'm taking my camera with me today so I'll try to post some photos this evening of what we get accomplished. We have until at least noon to work on him. So far, it's coming along very nicely. We've had plenty of time to brainstorm this sculpture. We've got incredible ideas that we are going to try and pull off with this one. I'm hoping it will be done before Thanksgiving. :-)

I hope everyone has a wonderful inspirational day! I'll see you folks this evening.

Many hugs to all,

Janet & Connie: DH is a dragon-lover and has quite a collection; I'm anxious to see what you come up with! Also, it occurred to me when he did our annual Halloween decorating extravaganza that maybe the solution to your "smoking" dragon might be a mister or fog-maker? Don't know if the moisture would be a problem, tho'...

Cheers, everyone---have a great day!

Oh, and Ikea has some glass lights that are similar to glass blocks--I've used them on the path to the yurt. Someone was posting about drilling for lights, but this might be an easier solution!

karmaplace you want bamboo??? do you realize what you could be in for if you plant it in the ground?
the kind I have is running so it just runs all over ..I did not plant it it was here when we moved in ...I have roots galore and need to find a way to get rid of them so I can get the area worked for planting.
I'd say come on over but I think it is a distance from me to you...mmmm but there is the us mail *S*
I already made 2 wind chimes from it and have more to cut and use to make a few more.
If you are going to plant it the clumping kind is better as it is slower in growing to take over.
or plant it in a big pot or make a cement surrounded area to plant it inside of.

Calalily..Lovely pictures!!!!!

Terri your flower arrangements are the bees knees!!! and I don't think I will get in to the football, soccer, ruby thing ..other then to say the balls used in the US are different then what is used in the UK and as with any place in the world the terms are different but that is what makes each of us unique.

Weedsgalore..I bought my little shed at our local harware store, where they still employee the best customer service. They have these little one of a kind things and (Janet) where the sparklies come from for Sparkly hour on the deck) The shed was there for a few months and patience paid off when they put it on sale.

I would help ya dig a hole for the pond Janet.
The Dragonfly ornament is just lit up with a hand held led light, combinations of colors give off different effects. I'll post one that's just blue next.

Terriculture love that flower frame. If I could paint, I would want to paint that.

A few friends of mine with great gardens have all been getting together every couple of weeks. Creativity and ideas flow just like here when we get together. My friend Mike has his incredible garden on his own website, and from colaboration has included a few of ours - We're calling them "Houston Area Art Gardens". It's an evolving creative process that will probably morph several times. More Dragonfly photos by Mike on there. click on digital photos, then click the "jeweled deer photo"
Sterly's visit to 5 Houston Area Art Gardens. Later on, the individual gardens will be featured individualy. Art and Gardening seem to be closely related, all creative process. If you have time..come visit

Good evening everyone. Busy day at the other cafe' so I haven't had much time over here. I just went through all the posts and WOW what talent.

From Rjudd
Quoting:
Art and Gardening seem to be closely related, all creative process.

I love this quote and have to agree. I have never attempted anything in art, as I believed I couldn't. Once I started gardening and reading all of the post on art, I thought, "Hmm, I could try that". I now have started on several different ideas and owe it to gardening. Such a strange link, but true.

Terri & Karma, as usual, fantastic arrangements. I think that is one of my all time favorites of yours, Karma.

Weeds, Fantastic. Truly a wonderful illustration. I would hang that in Teensy's room with honor. I love Beatrix Potter also. Thanks for showing it. Can't wait to see more.

Cala, you used ethereal as a description. I believe that is the perfect word to use. You have wonderful talent and I hope to see much more.

Cactus, am I going to need to put an alarm on the Butterfly garden pic? I have a laser sensor also.

Rjudd, I would love to know how you do that. It is amazing. Digital technology has created a whole new realm for art. I have a wonderful friend whose art shows are digital only. They are amazing.

I brought some cupcakes for everyone. Please enjoy. I snatched a few myself before bringing them and they are wonderful! They remind me of hydrangeas.

mmmm cupcakes and coffee...

pupilpropogtr, it's so simple you'll probably fall out of your chair. One night my friend Phillip and I were out in the garden and we had these little led party lights, and we noticed that shining them on and through objects and plants, produced the most brilliantly untouched up photos. By the time we done, I think we photgraphed hundreds of objects with different multi colored sequences some of which even appear 3D like because of the blue, red effect the led produces.
Here's a web site with led lights...
http://www.technomoves.com/finger_lights.html

This is a picture of a datura, with lights shining through the branches of a shrub, which produces the psychodelic effect. This is how the photo came out right off the camera with out any photo shop effect.

Warning: playing with led lights at night in the garden may cause you to loose track of time, shining on everything you can imagine, and dawn may greet you before your ready.

Thanks Zany! I know in my bones that you are absolutely right about it being the best one yet. Mainly because I'm not going to be in a hurry to see him finished.

I have a lot of plans for him. I found a little tree (think bonsai size) that was made of glass petals and leaves. It was dusty and rusty and really wasn't "my" style, but I bought it knowing that the pieces would make awesome "scales" for this dragon. I forgot to take a photo of it before I cut it apart the other day. I've cleaned each stem, petal and leaf and wrapped them up in paper towels so they are ready to use when their time comes. Connie has 2 of these little trees in different colors. I will take a photo of them to go along with my photos.

I'm dead dog tired and so ready for bed. I hope everyone has restful sleep and I'll see you folks in the morning. Please save me some coffee! Just black.

Rjudd, are you out taking pictures? I have some led's and just might myself. Oh, it is 34 degrees, maybe later. Another question. First, I can't believe these are not enhanced. Amazing! Anyway, what camera are you using and are you putting it on a certain setting? I have been studying up on cameras and I am about to make a purchase. Hmm, could I turn off the lights and photograph things in my house...

Zany dear, was the swim good? Your hair looks a bit limp, at least for Zany hair. Still, it is more interesting than most people's when they go swimming. Mine lays flat as a board.

Janet, I will have to come back on the marrow as it is almost one and the bed is calling. Can't wait to see it!

Janet, i was completely mesmerized, as i watched your "video"!! What a fascinating experience you provided...very well documented for us people, who had no idea how something like this was created. Just the problem solving of how and what to use as parts, and how to apply them, was so intriguing? Honestly, can't wait to see the finished dragon! Your program worked perfectly and good timing to watch the process! Thanks, for doing this!! sue

I'm glad you enjoyed it Sue. I was thinking about everyone here while I was working on it, hoping that someone might be inspired to begin their own creation. :-)

When we created Penelope for Robert last year, Connie and I had so much fun with the photos and the telling of what we were doing and how we were doing it.

I had an email from my Mom this morning. I sent her the link also. This is what she said, which I had never remember hearing about...

"I looked at the dragon pictures and you all sure did a lot of work on that. Not sure if I ever told you girls about your Daddy helping Peggy, they were friends of ours in Canton, Illinois for a parade and both of them were teachers. Anyway, I had some kind of flu during that time and didn't get to go to the parade but Charles had more fun fixing the dragon so the smoke would come out his mouth during the parade, etc. I think these were college students or at least high school kids. She taught both places and so did he. "

I know my Dad wasn't a teacher, so she must have been referring to Peggy and her husband. Daddy would have loved this dragon! He always loved the unusual. I suppose that is where mine and Connie's love of unique things comes from. Either that, or we're both just "weird"! HAHAHAHA

Oh Janet! Great job on the production!I had to go to full screen to see all the text ( Geez...look at those dirty fingernails !) on this puny monitor and I couldn't find the pause button on the fanfare control thingy that popped up at the bottom so I went frantically "back" a few times when I didn't read fast enough. That worked. I realized I may have the pause button on my computer. I'll try that this morning to see if it works. Looking wonderful Janet!

The FLOWERPOT Cafe is awesome. So much beautiful and innovate art. My garden next year will be heavily influenced by the Cafe.

Because I saw some georgeous quilts this morning, I would like to show you all a quilt I made for a friend's son who got a basketball full ride to Marietta College. The theme of the quilt is his althletic history in t-shirts.

The first picture is the front and the second is the back.

Thanks Cala. Your watercolor paintings are all just wonderful. I saw them last night while I was taking a break from editing my photos and forgot to say anything about them when I came back. I also love the butterfly garden the best, but all of them are just wonderful. Thank you so much for sharing them with us. I'd love it if you'd explain a bit about your other paintings. The Plein? creations I saw in the Artisans Forum. I'm not very familiar with painting and would love to learn more about this technique.

Recently I created a thread about the dragonfly we created for Diane in Baton Rouge.

Hey there! Well I went through almost everything here and I am blown away! this Cafe is just crammed with some of the most beautiful and creative art Ive ever seen.
I found a couple of things to add from my cache of crafts. I think these would add some "Sparkly" to the windows or hanging from light fixtures! I call them "Dewdrops". They are my wire and bead creations! I save beads of every description too, from taking them off old sweaters and bridal dresses ( I find at thrift stores) to old jewelry!
This one is a combination of gold colored wire , faux pearls, aurora borealis beads and crystals, glass trade beads and rondells.

Janet, the Plein Aire is painting outside by looking at the scene. I like to sketch first, but some artists don't do a sketch first. You have to paint fast because the light changes. When I want to paint outside, I take a small palette of colors(or dry pans), one brush and a book of paper(loose sheets are too hard to work with outside). Also, don't forget a small container of water.
Lots of the people in our Art League take a sketch book and pan watercolour when they go on vacation.
Eufala, the necklaces are very pretty, I love the way they sparkle in the light. For the cozy, did you do it as one big piece?

Your sofa cozy is very nice Eufaula. The colors are so warm and cozy. It would be perfect for sitting in the recliner with a good book.

Thank you so much Cala for explaining what Plein Aire is all about. It makes perfect sense. It would take a quick brush to do that with the changing light. All of your work is fabulous. The colors harmonize so well to bring a sense of peace and good feelings.

I once bought about 50 books on different art types from the Junior Art League. The president was having a garage sale at his home and I got the books for a dollar a piece. My daughter was interested in painting at the time. I let her choose the books she wanted, which was only a few. Then I sold the rest of them on Amazon. I made a killing on those books. Had I known then what I know now, I would have bought every one of them!

Terri, your quilt is great! Looks very 3D. I made a bedspread from some fabric that was very 3D that looked like porcupine quills only feathery. I got the fabric for $2 a yard when Joann's was moving. I didn't have a pattern. The bed is a queen size, but it's one of those pillow top mattresses that sits high from the floor. When I was done, that bedspread was so heavy!

Calalily , the sofa cozy was made one square at a time . I used the old square loom from an old fashioned cotton loop pot holder kit! ( remember those from a million years ago!) I just wove wool knitting yarn back and forth one way then used a long Afghan hook to do the weaving across the (warp ?) then I double crocheted the squares together with the black yarn.
Y'all excuse me, I just have to go back to floor #4 there were a few things I missed and I have to catch up! I dont want to miss a thing!

Terri, it didn't take long to make at all. I made a duvet type thing with the pink fabric attached to the furry stuff. Then I stuffed it with a down comforter. It was more cumbersome than anything to work with. I thought it turned out pretty.

On the menu, with plenty for everyone: Steak, potato and vegetable pie.

I just popped it in the oven, so it'll be about an hour until it's ready. I've never made anything like this before so I hope it turns out good. It sure smelled wonderful while I was fixing it.

Here's what I did:

Last night I planned on having steaks, so I put them into a zip loc bag with olive oil, steak seasoning, worchestershire sauce, salt and pepper. Hubby got home and said, let's just have leftovers from the weekend. Well, OK. So I knew I'd have to fix the steaks tonight. I cut them into little cubes tonight. Put them into a skillet to cook on high heat. While they were sizzling away, I cut up 2 waybigo already baked taters into chunks. Then I slivered a carrot, sliced some criminy mushrooms, and a half a shallot. Tossed all of that into the skillet along with the steaks. I had a bundle of asparagus that I was hungry for, so I cut that into 1/2 inch pieces and tossed that into the pot. I poured about a half a cup of leftover sausage flavored gravy in the center of the pot and stirred it around. Then I added about 1/2 cup of bordeaux wine ($2.00 on the reduced buggy at the grocery store) and 3/4 cup of chicken broth. I let it all simmer about 5 minutes. Then I got out my phyllo dough (I didn't have any pie crusts) and a waybigo cake pan. I layered about 8 sheets across the bottom. Poured the whole skillet of goodies over that. Then I topped that with some cheddar and swiss cheese slices. Then topped the cheese with more phyllo dough and tucked in the edges. Put the cake pan on a big cookie sheet with a lip. Into the oven on 350. I sure hope no one gets sick! HAHAHAHAHAHA As I said, it smelled heavenly in there a bit ago.

Janet

Edited to add: I forgot to tell you that I melted a whole stick of butter and brushed it over the top of the phyllo on the last sheet of it. I remembered how dry and brittle it is.

I can't wait to see the production on the Dragon, I can't open it up at work. Is the the dragon inspired by the one in the garden?

I have a kodak digital camera, use night time setting. Best to have a tripod as the shutter stays open longer for night time, and if the camera moves the photo will blur. Even then, a blur effect can produce some incredible images.

As you are experimenting with the lighting, if you shine all 4 color lights through branches the light will refract all over the place producing and incredible rainbow colors. That is the effect of the first dragon fly picture. I was shinning the lights through some branches.

This object is none less than my light brown courdery shorts I was wearing at the time we were photographing using blue and red lights. There is a whole series of these in different colors.

There were many dragons when I googled them. The ones we chose were more fantasy type dragons like in the movie Eragon. I saved some of the Chinese dragons that I found, but was drawn more to those from the book.

Here is a photo of 3 different dragons from the Eragon books. Eragon is a story written by Christopher Paolini. Christopher was 15 when Eragon was written. Just as an aside, He was home schooled. He wrote a whole "magic" language just for the book and had references in the book so you'd know what you were reading. The stories Eragon and Eldest, which I've read were really well written. I enjoyed them every bit as much as I enjoyed the Hobbit and Lord of the Rings, which I read as a teenager.

The blue dragon on the left is Saphira, the Red one's name I cannot remember at this moment. The golden dragon on the right is called Glaedr. I haven't seen the third book yet and don't know if it's available or not. I will read it whenever I find it. Our dragon is fashioned more like the blue and red one.

All right you sleeping artists, the night crew is here to clean up all the mess and move us to a new thread. So when you wake up all bright eyed and bushy tailed, ready to create your hearts out, keep in mind those of us who laborously work through the night to make your cafe' comfy.

Please follow me to the newest and fastest growing thread in town...#6
