Hi...thanks for the great forum.

I understand that it is against electric code to put (hide) the power cord of a television inside the wall. I would like to know what the danger is in doing this. Is it because a frayed or damaged cord could catch fire or something to that effect? I bought a house recently and the previous owners had a plasma mounted on the wall. They ran the power cord throught a hole in the wall behind the tv and out through another hole down lower on the wall near the electrical outlet. Also, there is PVC pipe in the wall, so the cord was inside that.

I had my tv mounted in the same spot and have put the power cord through the wall as they did. Now I have discovered that this is illegal and of course I am worried about safety. What exactly do I have to worry about in this situation?

This part of the house was an addition done 2 years ago, so everything is brand new.

Thanks.

There's a danger of the cord overheating inside the wall.
Why don't you fish a romex and install a outlet behind the TV, that would meet code requirements.

I used to have that problem and then my wife finally started to get on my case about hiding the power cord and A/V cables. Regular outlet wouldn't work because it stuck out too much. Found a great, cheap solution just used one of these Recessed Power Plugs to mount my LCD TV on the wall.

It even has a place next to the recessed outlet to feed the A/V wire through the wall. Cheaper than other options I looked at.
