Good morning all. How about a little art, reading nook, complete with plants and garden books? It's getting cold here and gardening is just about over for the year so I thought we could all bring the floral tea inside for a little tea and sympathy.

I just returned from a trip to Seaside, Oregon. As often happens, the very shop in which you would LOVE to browse is closed - so I can only share this photo and recall of a $750 price tag. The items were attached to a square of slate - and included shell fragments, BBs, and whatnot. I would love to provide more details, but one can use one's own imagination.

WOW! Already this morning I am blown away at the beauty of this "floor" of our cafe. The artwork in the reading area is wonderful Semper. What a wonderful place to sit and reflect on the cold day as you read ideas for the Spring.

Wannadanc, that piece is awesome! I picked up a couple of pieces of slate at one of the thrift stores having no idea what to do with it. I just knew that it would be used some day. This piece is an incredible inspiration for using the beads and other goodies I've collected, along with the slate. Thank you so much for sharing your adventure with us. It's beautiful!

Eufaula, I can already see the images that inspire the names of these pieces. I can't wait to see them finished. They will be magnificent. Be sure to take plenty of photos as you go along so we can see the progression of your visions.

That was one of the most fun weeks I've ever had in my life. Many thanks to Balvenie for giving us the opportunity to create the sculpture and the inspiration to do it in front of the world. It's made such a difference in our site, having the photos to be able to put together the shows. We might have never thought to do that had he not requested that we create the sculpture on line to inspire other artists.

I'd like to encourage each of you to take progression photos for posterity's sake. The next generation will appreciate the final pieces of art so much more when they can see the love and labor that goes into the creations.

Eufala, I actually said aloud to myself, "Ohhh, I love those". They have such a diaphanous look giving an ethereal quality to them. How beautiful. Thank you.

Semper, the "book nook" is perfect! I love the location and a chance to sit down and enjoy a good read. It is lovely.

Wannadanc, I always want to. Studied ballet and tap for 15 years. Did you train any? Just wondering because of the name. That piece of art is georgous, but $750.00. With the talent here, it could possibly be made for $30. But that is the thing about art, you don't buy it because it is cheap, you buy it cause it is breathtaking. By the way, what is BB's?

Eufala, I saw this in a magazine and immediately thought of your sparklers, which I LOVED by the way. Just thought I would pass on another idea.

Rj, Which led lights do you use? There are tons on the website and I got a headache trying to figure it out. lol.

Thanks Janet for the kind words about my article. I don't get over her as often as I need to, as other DG duties have me spread thin these days.

I'll try and stop in on a regular basis and keep in the loop.

I've got a whole batch of tee shirts dying as we speak. My nephew is in college and won't wear anything but my tie dyes. I'll unwrap and rinse this evening and post a picture.

I love looking at everyone's things, lots of inspiration here for sure!

We'll look forward to seeing those tees. I love tie dyed clothing myself and buy it at thrift stores. I can usually spot them from across the store! HAHAHA I've always wanted to try it myself, but didn't have a clue about it. I'd love to see some instructions. We hope you won't mind if we pick your brains a bit. :-)

Traci, that is a cool looking tree. It's amazing what can be done with wire and beads. I wonder who was the first person to put them together. :-)

Buy Clorox brand. The store brands sometimes have less than desirable results.

I've never actually done this idea, but am toying with it...

Cut a dragon out of contact paper, including scales and eyes. Wrap it around the leg of a pair of jeans and discharge. Neat visual, huh?

yep, contact paper will work, and will stick to the fabric and make a nice crisp edge. I used the botanicals for the article because we're supposed to be writing about garden related things, but the sky is the limit on this thing.

Pupil - the bb's are those things that go into BB guns - round copper amunition. I was concerned that folks might confuse the name w/ the acronym for bowling balls. No dancing history. A long story about the name - and the lack of an "e" comes from the good old days when AOL wouldn't let you use more than 9 letters in a screen name. Yes - I could do it correctly now - but a lot of folks know me by the error! LOL

Zany - yes that all came from the same shop. I wanted in there SO badly! This is not the high season for Seaside, though we might have fared better on the weekend!

At Jungle Heights, strange alliances take place..for one can never be too safe navigating the dangers that lurk about in the thickest parts of the jungle. It's rumoured that Squirzilla scuttles about, perhaps more than one! One can identify the Squirzillas by the fervant digging in pots, nothing visible but a plume of fur, resembling thick smoke of a campfire.

At the thickest parts of the jungle, when flying is no longer an option, the faeries call on their allies snakes and lizards to transport them to their destinations.

These threads move so fast it's hard to comment on everyones contributions.

wannadanc - Could you tell if the slate/mosaic piece was meant to hang or lay flat?

Eufala - The Grandmothers are very subtle but effective, they have a very strong spirit.

Calily - The humming bird was painted beautifully, it has a light airiness.

Melody - The article was clear and easy to follow with a wonderful result.

rjudd - wonderful story setup for your garden.

terri- the chairs are my favorite "flower art" you do.

I had a new spot inside for everyone to sit, I even cleaned up but someone (who will remain nameless) lost my photos for me while trying to back them up. We'll all have to pitch in to reclaim this area to sit down. Maybe someone could move in some of those new self cleaning flower chairs (hint, hint) ?

Janet, I just looked at your slide show again. You really have done a great job. It will an excellent addition to a web site. One suggestion make sure there is a way for people to look at the completed project enlarged without looking at the slide show. Not everyone will want to look at each slide show. They will probably choose to look at the ones where the pieces they like are shown.

You people go just to fast for me. How do you keep u[ and do all of the other things in your lives. I will just have to pop in, read the posts and comment on a few or I will get to frustrated to come here.

I use Procion Fiber Reactive Dye. It's a professional dye that actually bonds with the fabric. You only use it on natural fibers, it won't bond with synthetics.

Traci, Thank you for inviting me. I have enjoyed looking around at all the beautiful artwork. I just ordered a cup of hot tea and thought I would offer a painting for the wall. Sorry I forgot the frame. Well the painting isn't really finished yet, just hanging out until I make the final adjustments. Hope you have room on the wall, I'll take it back and give you a new one when I finish it.

I love the Raku pot. I have read a little about that process and always wished I had a chance to actually see it done. It is amazing how the fire makes such dramatic changes on the finish.

Good evening everyone. It has been a long day here, however, didn't you think the weather was beautiful? Quite a lot has gone on since I popped in today. Thank you so much for decorating this wonderful cafe'.

As a "non-artist", each day I stare in amazement at what you can do. So many different art forms, yet each one of you has a common characteristic, talent. I am so glad I get to enjoy this and almost feel a part of it. I am a lover of art and always have been. Now I get to come visit a private gallery everyday. Just wanted to thank each of you for sharing and giving me, as I am sure others, the chance to do so. For if you haven't noticed, there are a lot more views than posts.

Ok, got that off my chest. Sorry to get a little mushy. I won't let it happen too often.

Melody, I loved the article. I am going to "attempt" this on something for Teensy. Thanks for the instructions and the beautiful tye dyes (I buy it whenever I can FIND it). And a tentative thanks for the link. I really didn't need to purchase that adorable shoulder tie dress or the catalog. I have no will power, even when it comes to something I know nothing about.

Picabo, I am sooo glad you came in and completely agree with Zany!! Your talent is truly amazing. Is there anything you CAN'T do? Would you post the quilt also? I have the perfect shelf for the pot. Fortunate for me, it is at my house. They don't see me. I am invisible. Don't act suspicious.

Wren, get in here with your wood art!! I WILL have a fully functional wood working shop one day. I only have a few tools and a dream right now.

Thanks all. I will start a new later this evening. Just popped the cork, enjoy!!

Oh, I totally forgot.

Rj, LOVE, LOVE, LOVE the fairies. Please let them come out to play often!! Also thanks for the link to the light. MUST purchase one as soon as I get my good camera!! Also, loved your blog!

Semper and Zen, Thanks for showing others what this beautiful cafe' has to offer. I think I will be spending a lot of time in there. Oh, and the book area. TOO MANY CHOICES!!

Terri, as usual, your works are inspiring. Crud, still have flowers in fridge and I am sooo tired. I also gathered things from the yard. I will TRY to do something tonight but don't hold me to it.

I really hope I got it all now. Change of address when you come in the morning!!

Considering naming the painting "Don't Breathe" and painting a small almost invisible bird on the right side of the post. I want to add highlights to the hair tips along the back of the Bobcats neck and along the left side of the head and whiskers.

The Raku is fun Winter art. We should do it at the Cafe one night. Imagine it's a dark night, you reach into to a 2,000 degree Kiln and pull out a piece of red hot pottery. You hold it in the air and watch the color change before your eyes then drop it into a sawdust pit to smoke, when the smoke is just the right color you drench with water to stop the color process. Too Cool.

Here is the quilt that Traci was talking about. I should finish the new one this week.

Evening Karma, The Raku is a photo of a pot that I made last winter.
The quilt is an Art quilt, about 30"X40" all cloth. The painting is water color.

The quilt that I am working on is King size. We can drape it in a chair by the fireplace wrap it around our shoulders and have another glass of wine.

Have you got room on that shelf for a Bear sculpture? A funny little note on the bear. My photo wasn't clear in places so DH had to pose. LOL

I think the Artisan's have enjoyed what the cafe' has to offer, and it is a place where they can show their work and lots of people see it.
I'm slightly worried that we may be having too much fun and the more serious artists would prefer to talk about the works in more detail.
lovely to see you here, I'm still looking for someone to help with flowers,so if you get any free time, come over!

rjuddharrison, I'm loving the light show. They had those lights at Costco today and I was tempted to use the grocery money on one but DH didn't think it would taste too good. I tried to tell him that the art you are using it for was definitely to my taste but he just gave me that LOOK and kept moving.

WOW RJ! That looks like something that belongs with some Pink Floyd music in the background. Incredible show of lights and garden there. You da' man!!!

Folks, I've been to RJ's house. It's just as cool to walk through his jungle during the daytime as I'm sure it is at night. One of these times, I'll get to see it in person.

Dahtzu, that arbor is wonderful. Is that hyacinth bean vines I see there? If it is, I have them on my back fence. They don't look nearly as lovely as yours do, but I've been collecting seeds also. Each day I go looking to see what kind of seeds I can find for next year. I plucked a bunch of datura seeds this morning from plants that I grew from seed. (Did you all see that wayyyyybigo grin i just flashed atcha?) I have a bunch of October Rose Hibiscus seeds also. I haven't gotten them out of their little pockets yet, but I will. They went crazy on me this year.

Folks, I have to tell you that Terri's idea for this cafe has got to be one of the best ideas I've seen on Dave's this year. Traci's diligence in trying to keep these threads to a manageable length has really been appreciated by me. Everyone's art and getting to know each other has been priceless.

I do believe in my heart that THIS (speaking of the camaraderie here) was what Gary (GDRankin) had in mind when he made the pitch for this forum. So in GD's honor, I want to propose a toast:

May this cafe always be filled with beautiful creations from the awesome folks at Dave's Garden, and be a warm, loving, encouraging place where real people are always welcome. Many thanks to all of the artists that participate, past, present and future.

Has anybody heard from GD? I haven't seen him in a month of Sundays.

Many hugs to everyone,
Janet

Picabo, because I looked at them before I ate and then came back to new posts, I forgot to tell you how much I enjoyed your pieces. Each was outstanding. The bobcat is incredible. And the vase.. the colors are just beautiful. I love the way you posed it for that photo. I dabble in ebay some times and it's hard to show dimensions to 3 dimensional objects. You've definitely done that in spades! As for your fine bear, it's superb! Your hubby was indeed a good sport for posing for you. He must be a huggybear of a guy! :-) You are indeed a woman of many talents. Welcome to the cafe and please continue posting your stuff. Thanks to whoever "snagged" this gal! :-)

Connie and I sometimes google a subject to see musculature and see it in different positions. When we did the lady golfer, I saved about 100 different lady golfers in a variety of positions. Mainly because Connie was still on dialup and it was much easier to do research that way for us. Since neither Connie, nor I golf, those photos were invaluable on getting body parts in the right positions.
