| Here we are on 7B. Please continue with all your posts and PLEASE bring over the ones from the previous. One thing I request for this thread and future ones, let's not take sides and create a negative attitude. This is a place of art and FUN!! Please don't post things like "what did I miss", "In my opinion", and such. I really love this thread as MANY LURKERS on DG do to. Let's keep her going and CREATE!!

I'm loving the tiles and blocks and that weaving is wonderful Zen. So natural. I really like natural things.
Someone asked me this morning, some place else on Dave's where the cafe was. After answering them, I went to the Dave's Garden forum and invited the general population from Dave's to come see our wonderful cafe. Now, that doesn't mean that everyone can freeze up on their postings. (Just pretend they aren't there if you are shy! HaHaHa) I just thought it was a shame to hoard all of this lovely art work to ourselves.
Traci and Terri, you guys need to make a run to the store for ore goodies so that everyone will have something to snack on and drink while they are perusing this lovely art.
Cactusfan, you asked for someone to post some plants for the strawberry pot. You are welcome to any cuttings of my coleus. They've all gone wild and I'm not sure how much longer they will last. So take as many as you want. Just leave me something to try and overwinter in Connie's greenhouse.
Speaking of Connie's greenhouse, if you all haven't seen the greenhouse that Connie built, you really should check out this wonderful thread, showing the idea, to the completion of it. [HYPERLINK@davesgarden.com] It's more than a greenhouse. It's a cedar conservatory!

Cactus, you were on the verge of being put on probation. Luck you posted. lol. I love both the pots and really can't decide which I like best. I'll take both please.
Melody, how sad is this. I have watched paint swirled, so that is why I guessed that. I use to play with it when I worked construction. I think those are sooo neat and I may be playing again soon. I have to paint my house so I could have an excuse.
Pigeon, Love the tiles. You made those? Also, I need the planter more than Terri. She has plenty to arrange with. Haha
Zen, I love BOTH OF THESE. Weaving seems to be such a lost art and you have mastered it. Where all have you studied? Remarkable work.
Janet, Coleus...drooling...mmmmmmmm. Your flower arrangement is very nice. Thanks.

| I am not sure what those flowers were with the roses. I just love the color of the roses.
We made a trip out to Lumberton this evening to take the 4 wheelers to my brother in laws house. He's got a much bigger driveway than we do. I've had to park my truck on the road for several days now. I hate doing that, worrying that someone will come around the corner and hit it. It may not be much, but it's mine! HAHAHAHA
Noticed lots of smoke in the air when we got back home. They must be burning the marshlands in Louisiana. You can see the smoke in the air. It's the strongest we've ever seen or smelt it.
I wanted to repost the link to Connie's greenhouse since Traci's link didn't work. http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/t/671593/ It's truly a work of art and love.
Here's Connie's greenhouse. This photo is from May, this year. This used to be a wasted piece of real estate. She built this greenhouse as a lean to against the wooden fence by her pool. It's truly magnificent. By the way, I got in the way as much as I could on this project. :-)
My computer is being slow to open photos this evening, so I think I'll go read a book in the tub for a while.
I hope everyone has a great evening!

| Before I head out for the night I have been running this through my head and finally put in in notepad to paste in here.
The other day before we got this far in the cafe I think pupilpropogtr you had posted about the naughty chairs and put a lil song with it ..well it started me going on a song I had sung solo in High school for the last concert of the year.
I've done some changing but I thought the melody and the way the actual song is sung would work for us here in the cafe with some words changed to fit.
Those are the days my friend
Once upon a time there was a Cafe
Where we go to raise a glass or two
Just think of how we laugh away the hours
And dream of all the great things we can do
Those are the days my friend
We wish they'd never end
We sit and chat forever and a day
We'd live the life we choose
We'd fight and never lose
For we are young and sure to have our way.
La la la la...
Those are the days, oh yes those are the days
AS the busy years go rushing by us
We work our starry notions on the way
If by chance I'd see you in the cafe
We smile at one another and we'd say
Those are the days my friend
We wish they'd never end
We sit and chat forever and a day
We'd live the life we choose
We'd fight and never lose
For we are young and sure to have our way.
La la la la...
Those are the days, oh yes those are the days
Just tonight I sat inside the cafe
everything is changing everyday
In the glass I saw a strange reflection
Was that lonely naughty chair for real
Those are the days my friend
We wish they'd never end
We sit and chat forever and a day
We'd live the life we choose
We'd fight and never lose
For we are young and sure to have our way.
La la la la...
Those are the days, oh yes those are the days
Through the door there came familiar laughter
I saw the posts and heard them call my name
Oh my friend we're older and still crafty
For in our hearts the dreams are still the same
Those are the days my friend
We wish they'd never end
We sit and chat forever and a day
We'd live the life we choose
We'd fight and never lose
For we are young and sure to have our way.
La la la la...
Those are the days, oh yes those are the days
Originally "Those were the Days"
Mary Hopkin did the best known recording. It was released on August 30, 1968 #1 hit in the UK singles chart and reached #2 in the US.

| Terri, Help yourself to the quilt. I have stacks of them if we need more.
Janet, The tiles were a fun project, the carvings on the tiles are of one of my Borzois we called "Frazier". I Raku fired the tiles one Christmas when my children were home to help and enjoy the process. They are the only tiles that I have made. I keep thinking I'll make more. (LOL That "Focus" thing again.) The tiles are mounted and hanging by the door leading to the deck where "Frazier" liked to sleep before we lost him last year.

Profoundly moving; touching
Astute and pertinent; relevant
I think that best describes what you "revised".

What a wonderful story to go along with those beautiful tiles. I just spent considerable amount of time admiring your daughter's work. You are so right to be proud of her. Her work is awesome! Thank you for sharing her blog. I really enjoyed it.
You should check out the Phanfare site to host your photos of your work. It's very easy to work with, very versatile, and the cost is very reasonable (---this from the Goodwill Queen!). If you'd like to know more about it, send me a dmail and I"ll "hook you up". :-)
Both my mother and Connie paint. Both do wonderful work. Maybe Connie will post some of her art. If not, I've got a rabbit that she painted for me almost 30 years ago for my birthday. I'll try to remember to take a photo of it. It's incredibly lifelike.

| I'm glad you like it Mibus. You did an excellent job on the song. I can't wait to see more of your baskets and wind chimes. I have some bamboo that I'd like to make some chimes from. Connie has a really cool bird that sounds so neat. Unfortunately, I heard recently that he's just about bit the dust from being knocked about in the wind. We'd love it if you took photos as you are creating the chimes. (wriggling eyebrows here) I'd love to learn how to make them before my bamboo gets ruined outside. I have a variety of sizes to work with, which hopefully will produce a variety of sounds. :-) I went through my files and found a couple of photos of the bamboo bird chime. He's just the coolest thing. The photo that was posted of Charlenesplants holding your chime didn't show the lower part of the chime. Were yours cut the same way as these?

| Well I can tell you I usually let them fry so they are the golden brownish color but the ones I am making right now will not all get to be that way before my Dh leaves to go back to IL to go ummm ..we'll say visit.
Depending on who is doing the cutting depends on how the ends are done. I mad the angle cuts on all of them on the last ones I made but DH cut them for me this time and only angled one end...so this time yes they are cut kinda like those just more like a / but a lil more angle then that. LOL
you will want to use a fine tooth blade to cut them with to avoid alot of splintering. will check with hubby to see what size and saw he used this time.
Once you have them cut the lengths you want take a long drill bit and drill a hole through the nodes...(the joints) so they are open all the way through and this also helps prevent some of the splitting they do as they dry.
I do not have the best tools to do it with sine we sold alot of stuff on the action before moving here so I make due.
once you have that done you may want to sand them ...if they are dry as the green does not sand off.
then you will need to make your holes for running the line through that will be used to put it all together. I use fishing line myself.
mark where you want the holes then drill all the way through at one time so they are lined up...you might want to wrap the area with tape first to help keep it form splintering again but if you use a fine bit they should be okay.
I will take a picture when I get home tomorrow as DH is going to run the line through for me while I ma at work.
oh and to get everyone going in the morning I am putting these in the frig for the night since I have to be on my bus by 6:30am. LOL...Please don't eat them all at once make sure you leave some to share ...hahaha

Just a little observation I made. There have been 52 posts and 228 views since 3:36 pm. Pretty impressive folks. The gift shop is booming. Obviously, I am not the only lurker out there. Haha. Just the only one who posts, and cleans, and feeds, and "enter duty here".
Lots of catching up to do. First Rvnsbrk, on one of the first threads, I had requested pictures of bowling balls. It is such a neat and practical idea to me. Gazing balls are pretty, but they are a little plain and break sooo easy. Thank you for posting yours. I love it. This is one of the many, many things I want to attempt.
Rj, get that girl, Valerie, over here. Her bowling ball is awesome too. Sorry I am running out of descriptive words so I am having to harken back to eighties slang. I must need sleep.
Melody, those are just plain groovy (loving the lingo). You mentioned painting cars. Is there a certain type of paint you use for this and have you tried others? Successes and Failures? Can you tell I really want to do this? I see a wall of prints in our tiki bar with all that color. I assume you use your macro setting. What kind of camera do you have and do you use manual settings, if so, which ones? Any any other details I forgot to ask about. :^)
Picabo, you are the reason I am up so late. I have been reading your DD's website. Of course you can brag here. I use Teensy as my Art pics all the time. I started reading it at 10:52, right when you posted and finished about 15 minutes ago (1:00 now). AND I only got part of the way through. Needless to say, it is saved as one of my favorites. One thing I think you might have forgotten on your post, however. I am sure you were an inspiration to her as well. With all your above art and what I have seen, she wasn't just a random fluke in the art department. She got her talent from YOU! The tiles are wonderful. When are you going to make me something pretty?? ;^) Oh yeah, you did give me my beautiful angel's, which, btw, have large buds on one of them. Happy dance!! And finally, NO, I was not saying focus. I was alluding to the fact you probably could shave the animal, make the thread and material and then create the art. I wouldn't be surprised in the least.
Terri, beautiful arrangement, as always. I still have the flowers in the fridge and trying to think of something. I did come up with a great modus operandi. I need to buy fake flowers to practice with. That way I won't destroy them before I can finish. Pretty good, hmmm?
Janet, the green house gets prettier everytime I see it. What a great job with the poem too. I think it will look fantastic on the walls.
MORE POETS AND WRITERS IN THE CAFE', PLEASE. IT IS ART TOO!!
Semper, I saw the pic of the entire wall of art. Amazing what perspective can do. I love the display. Was that all yours? Was it considered one art piece?
Mibus, I am always making up songs and little poems in my head. I can here something, rain drops from a tree, and the next thing I know, I am singing to the beats of the drops something about the drops. lol. Unknown music is always there as I love to dance, so I keep a constant radio on in my head. DH has walked in on me several times dancing to it. Bad thing is he can't hear it and I look crazy. Good thing is I have seen Teensy walking around, humming her own music, or dancing when there isn't any. She has also started to make up songs. It is too cute. BUT, I could never sing the songs in my head, as it would sound like a frog croaking instead of the nightingale in my head. Please do try to record it and add a link. I think that would be far out.
Well since food has been provided, how about something breakfasty...

I think BigcityAl said it best yesterday when he said, "Happy Veteran's Day to all those who have served our country and to all those that enjoy freedom."

| pupil,
The wall installation is all one piece from a traveling show called The Cube and I.
There is so much to see and read I've not caught up yet, I did see a exceptional greenhouse and the pencil table Jada posted which is both practical and a found objects piece of art.
The raku by picabo (sorry I couldn't resist the silly rhyme) has a dynamic presence. I have very fond memories of a friends Borzoi, Teara. Click the image for an enlarged view.

That's one of the few things hubby and I agree on is that color! Great spot to sit and visit in Semper. When I read your post, and saw Dr. Suess plant, I was expecting to see a Brug there in the house. I have one of those that's pictured and I never knew what it was called. Thanks for unintentionally IDing my plant for me. |

| Morning everyone. I just baked some cranberry bread. As soon as it is cool I'll bring a plate full to the table. It smells good cooling on the stove.
Mibus... I love that bird...and the windchimes. Wow! Thanks for bringing them.
Traci... Yesterday I saw a little girl at Michaels that reminded me of the pictures that I have seen and the pictures in my mind of your Teensy. She was holding a fistful of flowers in one hand and a little purse in the other. The lines were long but no one cared because this beautiful child was singing unknown songs and dancing all around her Mother. How often do you see people waiting in long lines and everybody smiling?
Janet...Thanks to your father and all the other Veterans who have served our country.

| Here's another piece that I did at the same time. The first one actually has a name. I titled it "Good Hummingbird Karma" for my friend who has been trying desperately to attract the little guys to her garden. Last week, one finally showed up for her, and there was much rejoicing on the Hummingbird and Butterfly Forum.
I cruise the thrift shops and buy any interesting white cotton or linen items for tie dye. This little shirt is linen and has some lovely whitework embroidery on it.
As far as the swirled paint thing goes, these are urethane enamels. They require a clearcoat if actually painting with them, but since I photograph them still wet, they have a gloss about them anyway. I just drip a few drops on a piece of cardboard and tilt the thing around till it looks interesting.
I use a 'first generation' Canon 300D DSLR. It's absolutely ancient as far as DSLR tech goes, being about 4 years old. I use a 50mm macro lens and I generally shoot in aperture priority mode. This means, I physically set the lens opening and the camera matches it with a shutter speed. If I don't like the shutter speed that the camera selects, I change the aperture. This gives me only one setting to fool with, and I can make quick shots that way. The trick is to use the smallest lens opening and the slowest shutter speed you can without blurring the image. The longer a camera can 'look' at a subject, the more detail it records.
It's like blinking your eye. If you stare at an object without blinking, you remember more detail than if you blink and look away.

| Great color combination Melody. When I opened the thumbnail, my first thought was of celosia blooms.
Thank you for explaining about the camera settings and about the blink analogy. Excellent explanation. My hands have a hard time holding the camera still when I use that setting. I need to set up a tripod and try that again.
An excellent example of wiggling hands is this shot I took of the comet a couple of weeks ago. I laugh every time I see this shot, but keep it to remind me to use a tripod. :-) Click the image for an enlarged view.

| I don't know where else to post this, so this looks like a good spot. For Halloween, Jennifer made costumes for the kids. Ben was an octopus and Kaylee was a snow leopard princess.
Jennifer found the idea for this octopus on either etsy or craftster, where she hangs out. She brought all of the supplies needed over to my house and we began creating this octopus. She didn't get photos of the kids in costume. Or if she did, they are no longer available. Her hubby dropped the laptop and her memory card was in it. the memory card shattered and will have to be replaced. She will re-dress the kids to get photos later on.
She was here the other day and while Ben was napping, we took this photo of her wearing the octopus head. We used a hood pattern, drew out a pattern for the "arms" and added the circles and eyes. I thought it was just adorable for a 2 year old.
No photos of Kaylee's snow leopard costume yet. She didn't have it with her that day, but did have the octopus hood.

| Thanks Balvenie. It's come quite a ways in the past couple of weeks. Did you get to watch Penelope come to life? It flowed very well, I thought. Creating the thread as she was being made was such a wonderful idea. I was so thankful to have all of those pictures that were taken. Snagging the entire thread up until I shipped it was a stroke of genius on my part too. That made it so I had one file, with the photos, to work with on setting it up. I took out all of the "chatter" so it would flow properly. When I was working on it this weekend, it was almost like being there again. Penelope will always have a big place in our hearts. :-)
I change some of the music tonight. I had to get Hillary (my youngest) to come by and show me how to download music. I happened to find that song that's been on everything on my computer. I've been wanting to change it for several days now. Now that I know how to do it, I'll be able to change some of the others too. As much as I love Pink Floyd, after listening to it over and over and over and over while I've been working on it, I'm ready for something else. I think I will try and make a point of changing out the tunes now and then. |

| oh gee you want more pictures ...not easy to do without the flash going off and making it hard to see detail.
It is not hard at all as I don't do the curing since I don't have a torch to use and a candle takes longer and you have to keep wiping it to get the "black" off from the candle.
I just pick out different sizes in diameter of the bamboo we have cut down cut it so the ends are angled then take a cement drill bit that is LONG 12 - 14 inches long about 5/16 in diameter and drill down through the nodes inside to open them and release any pressure that would build up as it dries to prevent cracking...plus it opens it up for the sound as they hit together in the breeze.
Then I take and mark 4 spots for holes evenly spaced ( by the eye method not measuring) and take a fine drill bit to drill the holes all the way through going in one side and coming out the other for the top bars and one hole all the way through on the ones I am using to hang...there will be a lil splintering but you can also tape around the bamboo to help stop that.
once that is all done I then take Fishing line..yes I said fishing line ...what size? heck if I remember what we put on the reels. ... lol...cut long pieces of it and run it through the chime pieces then run one end through the top piece and tie off. ...you need to tie it several times as the line is slick and doesn't always hold the first time so if you know how to tie a hook to fishing line it works best.
I've taken a small piece cut and used it to space between the top and bottom bars ...you need to run the line through it so you can tie it off to keep the bars tight to the spacer otherwise the bottom one goes down to the center chime.
I just tie them off at whatever desired length I want so when the wind blows they will hit against each other.
You do need to hold the chimes each one in your hand to feel the weight and do your best to put equal weight on each side so they don't hang slanted.
I just looked at pictures online to see how they were done then did it.
bamboocrafts.com has a section for crafts and it explains the way to "cure" it along with others that have made flutes and other things from it.

It should not directly touch the ground as it makes it go bad faster.

| I'll keep that in mind Mibus. I've got some that's natural wood and some that's colored red and some that's colored green. The green is skinny stuff. The natural is already is sections of about 12-18 inches. the red is in 4 ft. sections. I really don't want to use the red. I want that red to be hanging in the corners of my bedroom.
Zen, I see copper things all the time. Especially at the Renissiance Festival. Very pretty stuff. Most of the time though, it's just copper in the sculptures. The beads we add really make ours uniQue. :-) And I didn't see anything at all like our sculptures at the Ren Fest. I was really surprised at that.
