Finished cleaning and polishing Mike's kite hanging yesterday.Mistakenly referred to as a "window". Didn't someone once say "A piece of glass does not a window make" ? Either way it is finished and soon to be wrapped in plain brown paper for delivery. It was a fun project.

It is lovely. Such an airy and graceful design!

As someone who is totally ignorant about stained glass...how is the beautiful lettering accomplished, in the piece of glass at the bottom?

Sheri,
It is sandblasted, for a quick answer. It starts out at the manufacturer's as a sheet of clear glass, then a very thin layer of colored glass is poured on top, sometimes more than one color layer. To get the 'etching' one puts two or three layers of 'resist' (like clear shelf paper) on the glass and cuts out the image area, then someone with a steady hand sandblasts away the color layer to expose the clear glass. Thats all there is to it. The sandblasting and the "flashed glass", as it is called, are more often than not the most expensive part of a piece but tend to be the focal points. Without the lettering this piece would have lost most of its impact.

Balvenie, thanks for the good explanation. I love the addition of fine detail it allows! The four seasons window would be a beautiful piece without the lettering, but the lettering makes it fabulous (and I love that Arts and Crafts font style too.)

I never knew what "flashed glass" meant. Thanks!
