Please Respect the following requests

1. Please do not show any art that has nudity in it. This was offensive to some in the past.

2. The cafe' is a vegaterian establishment. Please refrain from showing any pictures involving dead animals or discussing meat or meat products.

3. The most important one, IF ANYONE HAS A PROBLEM WITH WHAT IS POSTED ON HERE, CONTACT ME BY D-MAIL DIRECTLY. The cafe' is an environment to promote creation, expand the imagination and enjoy each other's conversations. When differences are aired for all to see people are turned off by the negative vibe. This is a postive place for positive thinkers who truly appreciate the beauty of art. ALSO, PLEASE DO NOT COPY AND PASTE ANY D-MAILS YOU SEND ME. The purpose for D-mails is privacy. There is no reason to show everyone what was discussed other than to glorify oneself.

4. Finally, please attempt to put all the negative energy that was generated behind us. The future looks positive and we should all keep this in mind. This has been a fantastic thread and it has the potential to carry on for years.

@@@ I WILL POST THESE RULES AT THE BEGINNING OF EACH NEW THREAD@@

I couldn't agree more wren!! I wonder Micheal Angelo's statue of David was created today, would it have to be removed? Leonardo da Vinci's Vitruvian Man? What about The Birth of Venus? Paintings usually start from sketches before becoming masterpieces. I will say no more on this subject.

Tell Annie that I am amazed that a child of her age shows such great talent. She has a good role model. Also let her know, that people have different views on everything and we got side tracked from what we should have been discussing, a child artist with great potential, looking for critique from seasoned artists.

Annie, you are very impressive to be so young and I hope you continue to improve and work on this talent everyday!! Don't ever let anything get in your way of a dream. Pull you chin up and forge ahead. Please share some of your other art if you don't mind. Cut out a dress from a catalog and put it on the drawings for the time being. lol.

Please tell Anne that I am impressed with the variation of line and proportion. One of the hardest parts of the female body to draw is the breasts. It is hard to see them the way they are. For the most part they are not perky, but sag a bit. The one that is a side view is to upright, most are correct. One of the things about drawing that I have always said to my students is draw what you see not what you think things look like. She is doing a good job of this.

Good Morning, Semper. Wow, you got an early start today. Especially for your time zone. I love the, I guess 3 dimenisonal effect your art has. Does it have a particular name, such as Zen's Smoked Pottery? Oh, I hope it was Zen's. Anyway, it almost has a stained glass look to it. Is this in or going to be in a show?

It is pretty chilly out there today, so I made some wonderful coleus stew with autumn leaf garnish. I hope everyone enjoys!!

By the way, what all women are are you covering? I love the themes of your art. If themes is the right word. You cover the woman's struggle and triumph very well. I'll check in with everyone later. Here's the stew and I'll run get everyone something warm to drink...

Hey pupil, Thank you for the interest and questions. I'll try to answer quickly before the thread takes off. I use cut, folded, molded, shaped, distressed. etc. paper. I've even used the paper the dog chewed in one piece. Then I paint, cut and use graphite and colored pencils. When I put it all together I layer it so it is usually 3D. I kind of build the pieces like a sculpture or a building. I don't think my technique has a name but because most of it is on paper I do show also with the book art artists.

About 3-5 pieces from the Women Warriors series will be in a "Small Works" show in Dec. It depends on how many pieces I can finish to my satisfaction. The one I'm working on now is Athena because she represents war and wisdom, but she's not proceeding smoothly. I'll have to fight for this one to work. After that I'm open to many different directions .
Thanks Zen, I appreciate your comments.

And now you must all take away my tea cup and push me out the door so I can get to work.

Here's a shove, but I have to say, I find it ironic that you are having a battle with Athena. I wonder who will win?

I know I kill everyone with questions, but did you come up with this technique on your own or have you been trained in it? It is interesting to me to see where ideas come from and how they come to fruition. I have so many ideas in my head but I am afraid I lost the key to the lock which allows them out.

Off to play in the yard.

Hi Zen, I'm so glad you brought the fireplace in!! it's freezing today and it looks so cosy and warm in here now.

Yawn and streeetch...Oops, little late coming in today. I will be out for most of today and tomorrow. The family is coming in to celebrate Teensy's birday...again. Thought I would share a little bit of what I have collected. As you all know I am not an artist but love art, in many forms. One of Mothers's dear friends does pottery in North Carolina. She has given me pieces over the years. Many small ones, just to add to the house. This is a littles series of small plaques to hang or set around. As I am in a new house, I haven't found their place yet, but I am working on it. Sorry for the camera quality. Mine is on it's last leg. New one should be here soon. YIPEE!!

The largest piece. It is about 4 x 6 inches

Good morning again. I definitely need an extra cup of tea today to get started. I'm off early to the shore. I just wanted to respond to jmcdowell and pupil on the new project. First pupil, that was a very insightful comment on the "Athena" battle. I'll have to report that the direct attack went all in Athena's favor, but I was able to capture 2 mistakes that have real potential. The technique is a combination of many other paper arts and actually anything that works at the moment. I push the materials to the breaking point and then a little past . I then try to recover it in the hopes that the process will reveal something new.

I think the tiles are quite beautiful pupil.
terri, the frothy concoction in the black and white cups tasted as good as it looked. very dramatic, you really outdid yourself on this one.

The photo is Athena? I still have more work on this one, it's just tacked on to the wall.

Hey all I thought of saying morning but I know that it is not morning here in Texas and it isn't' morning in other places too and it could be evening or the next day already some places ...LOL..so Hey all it is.

Terri to be honest at one time I used to decorate alot for holidays but not so much anymore.
kinda hard to be in the mood when there is only hubby and I here now ..my son (18) came to Texas with us but as of 6:15 this evening he will be on his way back to Illinois. long story ..so for this turkey year I'm not sure what we will be doing other then just another day. I don't know if my oldest girl that lives down here will even be off to be able to come out. If she is then yeah I will be doing some nosh other wise will just be some simple things
Since the move I have yet to get a new tree for Christmas to have to put up as I know my folks will be here as they are stopping by on their way to the Mission Texas area where they go for the month of January.

Love the flower arrangements you do though and some day we will have to Chin Wag a bit more as my mothers family came from england and I would love to be able to put actual names and towns with the family tree I have as I know alot of the ones listed are now past and new generations are in place.

Zany - Any I guess I need to come talk dirty with ya I started a compost pile and am trying a new thing I found online called bokashi composting ...if you go to emamerica.com they tell about the stuff there along with EM-1...wanted to find something to help with gardening in Texas since I don't have "dirt" I have sand and clay.

Toodle pip for now.

I don't know for sure ... I do know my great grandmother was born in Devonshire england march 10, 1865 Ada James
She married John Pengelly Tredennick/Tredinnick at the age of 29 and they left for America at Torquary Devonshire (the English Rivera)

The spelling of the last name did change when they got here but I do know there are connections in both.
My 2 great aunts used to travel to England and visit family there but when they went to the nursing home and passed one of the brohters started tossing things out so I have no info other then a newspaper clippings that gives the info I just gave you...her bible , the hand written family tree and the family reunion book

Any yes I do need to get over there I have done a lil lasagna on the bed in front of the house this fall.

first thought is wisteria and soaking it in water to soften it to use as a handle for a basket ...LOL
why? cause that is what I have done with the vines.

take the vines off the branch and put tapered candles in there instead.
If you have more like that you could take the vines off or cut the branch out and use all the twisted vines for a mobile and the branch if you can keep it whole too as the hanger ...kinda thinking with what Zany said just more detail there ...LOL

I started this thread http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/t/784845/ and have gotten a whole lot of really good information from our resident experts. We have been a bit silly there at times and it is geared to beginners so if you are looking for more technical info there are several others that are a bit more serious and technical in nature.

Dean how big is that stick/branch? It's a very interesting piece with the vine winding around it, but I can't help but wonder what the wood itself would look like if the vine was removed.

Well, that was a looong hour. Sorry I am just getting back. This weekend was extremely crazy, but life is back to normal, well to MY normal.

Amazing, there are 66 post and 558 views. So, all you lurkers, come on out and join!! Even if you aren't artistic, like me, you can enjoy a chat, see some great art, have a nice warm drink, eat something from the cafe' or that WUVIE brought in, or even post pics of original art you have been given or purchased. I have some wonderful pieces I will be showing off.

Semper, for a battle she is winning, sure looks like you are not defeated yet. I see rage, anger and strength in her, which I imagine the goddess of war would have. You have captured that very well, if that is what you are going for (I am definitely not an art expert. lol). I can't wait to see an update on her. How is it going now?

Terri, as usual, you did fantastic. When is Zany getting new hair. I believe it is time for a makeover.

Wren, now I see a dancer. Head at the top, body twined aroud tree and legs doing an arabesque. Funny, I had to check my spelling as usual and went to the dictionary.com website. This is how it described an arabesque:

1. a sinuous, spiraling, undulating, or serpentine line or linear motif.
2. a pose in ballet in which the dancer stands on one leg with one arm extended in front and the other leg and arm extended behind.
3. a short, fanciful musical piece, typically for piano.
4. any ornament or ornamental object, as a rug or mosaic, in which flowers, foliage, fruits, vases, animals, and figures are represented in a fancifully combined pattern.

I find that a little ironic for the chose of pose, especially #1 & 4.

Hello to everyone else. Wuvie, would love some cookies!! I have gorged myself of peach pies my grandmother gave me at Teensy's birthday. They are my favorite and she brought us (ME!) two plates full.

I brought some left over arrangements from Teensy's birthday to put in the cafe'. If you noted above, I was in a bit of a panic looking for Terri to help. I bought tons of flowers and had no idea what to do with them. Then, lucky me, pulled out my back and arrangements were the last thing on my mind. Thirty minutes before people arrived, I threw these together. These are my third attempt at floral arrangement, thanks to the encouragement at the cut flowers forum. Oh, these pics were taken four hours later (have to give some excuse). They are a bit droopy.

The first I am happy with. I even tied the bows!! I tie my shoes backwards, so that alone was a huge accomplishment.

Good morning all, this snow is what greeted me yesterday morning. Hope everyone is warm and comfortable today. Lots of ginger-garlic miso soup (miso can replace chicken stock with the same healing properties for vegetarians) is good for colds or a tea with ginger, honey, lemon, and cayenne pepper ( very spicy and a real eye opener).
Although a bit of sunshine from the daisy cookies should fix all ailments just fine.

Teensy has a big personality that comes through in the photo. She reminds me of a smaller version of the child actress who played the child lead in "Little Miss Sunshine". Definitely not a child's movie though, wonderfully off beat and maybe a bit controversial for some.

Hmmm...wrenwood (wonderful table btw) I've saved similar vine entwined "sticks" and used them as a base for mobiles as previously mentioned by Zanymuse or collected a group of them and lashed them to longer limbs for a rustic trellis. I'd like to see what you come up with.

Hi all, hope you had a good day, snow aside. I haven't seen the white stuff in years, knock on wood. I do like to have one good snow, but after that I am ready for it to be gone. If a flurry even drops down hear, the world stops. We don't know how to handle it. It is like the aliens invaded and everyone is dumbstruck.

Semper, you are the third person to say that about Teensy. She likes to perform for people also. I have wanted to see that movie since it came out. I hear it is wonderfully offbeat, which makes it all the better. The photograph is beautiful, just keep the white stuff up north please. Ditto on the miso soup. How is Athena coming? Any progress?

Zen, what have you been up to? Sculpting I am sure. What are you currently working on? I imagine we could at least talk about it. lol.

CACTUS, where have you been?? I have some wonderful cacti ? I would like to have identified. I need to get some pics to show. I have one that is amazing and don't even know if it is a cactus, succulent or ?? I got it at a round robin about 1 1/2 months ago and it got stuck in a corner in some water. I found it last week when I finally cleaned up the garage/overwinter area and everything with it was dead. This thing was huge and very healthy. Very unusual looking plant.

I received the most wonderful gift, well Teensy did, for her birthday. It is a simple quilt full of ancestry. I will get some pics and how it was made for later.

Here is some more of the pottery I have from my mother's friend. These are some little cups she made. I love the coloring. There are four, but one was being used as a vase (my mother would kill me if she knew). I think most of the pieces I have are slough, but I still find them lovely. Who could turn away free art??

Good morning all, I'm glad to see the snow has melted. I'd be happy to post a miso soup recipe but can you wait a few days? I'll have to go back and get measurements since I cook the way I do art, learn the basics then go exploring. I'm always stuck when someone likes a certain dish because I never know which version they tried.

pupil, Athena is almost finished, she got greyer, sharper and more metallic. She might need a helmet. I have 2 more moving along nicely, but I'm not sure who they are yet. Maybe Ishtar, or Neith or Morrighan? edited to ask if anyone has suggestions for names of warrior woman. Right now I'm reaching back into myth and ancient religions.

Those are pretty cups to pour our morning tea into.

Since we are spending more time inside maybe a fern terrarium would be a good project for the cafe. Someone besides me will have to look after it. My indoor ferns always look very ragged after awhile. These have just been repotted so we can hope for the best.

Hello everyone,
Welcome Aguane and Thankyou for the rock candy, very creative!
Traci, your arrangemwnts are very pretty and colourful, thankyou for brightening up the cafe and doing such a good job! Sorry I haven't had a chance to call in, I've been really busy at work and parents evening etc.
Semper, we haven't had any snow here yet, although it is expected at the end of the week. I love soup, just what we need at this time of year.
Wrenwood, How thick is the log? I was thinking, carving holes for small plant pots and make a garden feature, or standing it upright and making a bead tree!
This is just a flying visit, I'm leaving some wine for 'Happy Hour' ...cheers everyone!

Traci stopping by for a cup of coffee. Maybe can get a bit of expertise on something.
Wanting to make a concrete floating Island for my pond and need to start learning on how to make it look like real rock. The order of applying colors, do you start with dark or light and work out to the last color.

Tanzy reminds me of my grand daughter. Rough as the boys.

Hey Ted,
It sounds like you are planning on using a paint for the island? I don't have much experience with stain, but I know all about faux finishing.
Of course it depends on the type of rock that you are trying to mimic, but for a natural look, I would start with the lighter color. Once it has dried you can use a somewhat diluted wash of the dark to enhance the irregularities of the concrete and bring out a texture. Once that is done you can add more color for veining etc. ( I would use a soft sea sponge). Then I would use some more of the wash to knock the color back a bit and add more depth to the finish. You could also use a bit of the light color and make another wash in some small areas to give it a chalky look like some stone has.
My best suggestion would be to really study a natural stone and see if you can determine the best way to apply the layers.
